After that he cames to Argentina in another ship (Port Diamante by Paraná River). The goverment gaves him a piece of land and he builded a home there and he worked the land as a farm or something. Samuel´s Father came from Volga to Argentina and visited him but he doesn´t liked this place and he leaved his son Samuel. I heard some information about Samuel, like he had brothers (I don´t know how many) and they went to USA. I wish to know where they was, where are the descendants, who they are, etc. If anyone have any information about my family please let me know, I will be appreciate that. 3. Ken Yes it was 2000 the year We went for the first time. You can get by with English in Saratov but not everyone, mostly the younger ones speak English. The Archives is strictly Russian. I never run into anyone speaking German except a few cousins, but they preferred Russian. Feel free to ask any questions anytime, that's what we do here. Have fun Kenny Stugart YP, PB ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Kenny, Thank you so much for your message and the URL for your web site! What a great trip you had to Saratov. I wasn't clear on the year you actually went on that trip. Was it 2000? I am about a year from retirement, and want to really immerse myself in genealogy at that time. Hopefully this will include a trip to Saratov and the villages where my ancestors lived. Will I get much out of it if I don't speak German? Do the Saratov residents and officials speak Russian or German? I probably would include a stop in the Czech Republic which is where my Pelzel / Pelzl ancestors came from. I have many other questions for you, but I feel like I am imposing on you and don't want to do that. However, I'd like to correspond with you in the future if that's OK. Sincerely, Ken Pelzel (Pelzl, Rohr, Staab, Dreher

    3. Czar Alexander II (1855-1881) is responsible for the exodus of the Volga Germans to other countries when he reformed the military in Jan 1874 by lifting Catharine the Greats manifesto promise never to require a Volga German to serve in the military. I read this somewhere a long time ago and my findings are that the Germans started to leave shortly after that. From my village the first that has been found is Oct 1876. Last time I was in Saratov I read a couple military records on my grandfather and his brother and a few other ancestors, excellent documentation I must say. However all the records I read,I found the Germans were not given any fighting positions, all were behind lines with most not even leaving Saratov. All the records I have seen of my ancestors were all training then sent to the reserves. I was told by the Director that the Germans were like a support group. Kenny Stugart

    3. Susan, First anyone could be conscripted into the Russian Army after about 1880, so it wasn't uncommon for German-Russian to be drafted into the Russian Army. As to where the military records can be found. I have read a couple of new articles that this might have become more difficult. One article basically stated that Putin's government has placed restrictions on access to the archives for obvious reasons. I do know that when I was in Russia a couple of years ago we had a presentation at the Saratov Archives in which they indicated that there are records there. Also the KGB archives in Saratov also have records of military service. There are supposed to be ways to searches done in these archives by going through the various consulates in this country but I don't know how successful they are or how much they cost. 3. Does anyone know where Military records can be found for German-Russians who served in the 1905 Russian war under the Czar? I have a wonderful Green footlocker (Green wood trunk) with Russian pin-ups and the Czar family in it. My Philip Litzenberger served in this war. We have been told, that after 100 years living in Russia, they had to become Russians and serve. Is this correct? Thank you for all your help and wonderful postings.
