Thank you very much to all of the people who sent me responses about my Declarations of Intention / Naturalization comment/question. You confirmed that I have not been wasting my time by looking at individual local/county/state indexes to find naturalization documents. I do actually have naturalization documents for 4 different ancestors that I had to get from 4 different archives. The first one was for a great-grandfather, which I ordered from the Colorado State archives after getting the document number from someone on this list; the second was for a great-grandfather's second wife, which I got from AHSGR-Fresno; the third was for a great-grandfather which I got from the Michigan State Archives after finding it in a county index; the fourth I actually did find on Ancestry, because they have an index of Detroit Michigan Federal Court Naturalizations. That last one I had to order twice because NARA-Great Lakes claimed that they didn't have it. By the way, has anyone ever received a set of Naturalization documents that had the Certificate of Arrival attached? The forms refer to an attached certificate of arrival, but none of the copies I have received have included a Certificate of Arrival. I wonder of there is a separate place where those are filed away?
Mark Do you have access to Ancestry.com? They have just recently added ship records to there collection. If not I would be glad to do a search for you. Hi Kay, I'm not sure if it's relevant as it's 10 years later, but my great-grandfather came to the US from Hussenbach in 1907. In recorded tapes, great-grandpa says that they traveled from Hussenbach to Saratov to get papers and their passports. From there, they took a train to Bremen, Germany where they waited for 10 days for their boat. They actually traveled from Bremen directly to Baltimore, MD. I don't think it was uncommon for relatives or others in the community to help pay for tickets over. I know that on my dad's side of the family, a church congregation helped raise money to bring some of the family members over. Hope that helps a bit. Listers, Does anyone know if there are ship records that exist for those that sailed from ports in Germany to Buenos Aires, South America or where they might be found? My GG Grandfather Johann Adam Dorn, his wife Katherine and a son Jacob Dorn along with his wife Katherine (Melcher) and several children all left Germany and sailed to South America where Johann Adam's wife Katherine died. Shortly after she died they sailed from Buenos Aires to New York to embark on a new life. Through my research I was able to find their ship record from Buenos Aires to New York but would like to find the first part of their journey if possible. Thanks, Mark

Regarding Kenny's comment about letters of intention on Ancestry.com - I'm relatively new to genealogy research, but as far as I know there is no comprehensive index of declarations of intention on Ancestry.com or anywhere else. There are a few naturalization indexes on Ancestry.com, for a few specific geographic areas. I'd be thrilled if someone would post back and tell me that I am wrong about this, because it's a real pain to search around and hope that you get lucky and find your ancestor's naturalization papers in an obscure index somewhere. I just thought I would let Vera and listmembers know that after much research and most interesting research, I spoke with members of the Dreith family her in CA who are related to Tatiana and will be in contact with her via email. For all of you who have helped Michael and I in his GV research, this is our little way of paying back for all your kindnesses. Elaine
Kay When you do a search make sure you use a multitude of different spellings, combinations you would not think of. Also I think letters of intentions are on Ancestry.com but not sure. Kenny Thanks Kenny. I do have Ancestry (Deluxe Edition) and have been searching like crazy. I have my grandfather's Russian military papers with dates they were given permission to leave, but no passport, ship manifests, or naturalization papers to tell me when, where they left from or going to which port. I think this might be one of the Hopp family that comes from the village of Kraft. Some were born in Kazakhstan, and could well be from the Volga, some are GRs from other provinces. Just some examples below, some have/had (cabinet) ministerial posts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Gref (Herman Graf) Education and early career Gref was born in the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (now Kazakhstan), the son of ethnic German deportees who were exiled there in 1941. He attended Omsk State University as a law student from 1985-1990 after fulfilling his two year military obligation. Gref taught law at Leningrad University while completing his post-graduate degree, which he finished in 1993.
