I heard or read somewhere that the Russian wolves were a different kind of wolf than American wolves and that Russian wolves DID attack and eat people. There seem to be lots of stories of throwing something from a sleigh to distract the wolves from their chase. Greetings, I saw an article in a recent issue of Outdoor Life about wolves attacking dog trainers in the North American wilderness. It brought to mind the stories of the wolves mentioned in the Bender book in the early days of the Kamenka VG village, as well as my granndparents tales, who were butchers, and spoke of having to throw meat to wolves which followed their delivery sleds in the winter. the wolves would roam throught the village at night, attacking and animal not sheltered inside. I realize that wolves do not usually attack humans in ordinary circumstances, but what struck me about this article was the ferocity of the attack, when these wolves were attacking other canines in the company of humans. It gave me a new appreciation of the survival trials of our ancestors, and new meaning to the old bromide of "a wolf at the door". In this article, the savagery and pack strategy of the attack is described, by a pack including 185 pound animals. The domesticated large dogs did not stand a chance against an organized pack. It definitely illustrayed some of the trials of our ancestors in a more primal world. Frank Jacobs
Billings Gazette Billings, MT 25 Jan 2007 Eva L. Pogue, 84, died on Jan. 21, 2007, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Billings. Eva was born on March 16, 1922, in Billings, the third of eight children of Annie Martin and J. Herman Peterson. Eva grew up in a musical family and had a wonderful voice. She was always in the middle of the large group gathered around the piano for the sing-along at Peterson gatherings, having a great time. All her life, she thoroughly enjoyed singing, dancing and playing the piano. Later in life she liked to listen to recorded music. Eva graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1939, attended Billings Business College, and then worked until 1943 when she enlisted in the W.A.V.E.S. of the U.S. Navy. After attending Yeoman school in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she served at Sandpoint Naval Air Station, Seattle, for the duration of the war. Eva met her future husband, Omar W. Pogue, in 1935, when he came from Brockway to board with her family while attending business school. They began corresponding after he took a job out of town following graduation and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1940. While on furlough from his station in the Aleutian Islands, he traveled to Seattle and proposed. Eva would laugh as she told the story of her whirlwind marriage and her mother scrambling to put it together. They were married on Jan. 15, 1945, at the First Congregational Church, in their service uniforms. The war then separated them until October of 1945 when they were both discharged. Eva and Omar had one daughter and three sons between July 1946 and December 1953. Eva always enjoyed the many activities her children participated in, which included sports, scouting and choir. Eva worked for the Bureau of Land Management from 1961 until her retirement in 1981. Eva was active in the Moose fraternal organization, rose through all the chairs of the Women of the Moose (WOTM), and received her College of Regents Degree at Mooseheart in June 1977. She was chosen in 1981 to serve on the International Grand Council of the WOTM for two years, during which she traveled all over the United States and Canada. Eva was preceded in death by her husband Omar in 1989; and her daughter, Deborah Pogue Coleman of Seattle in 2001. She is survived by three brothers, Jim Peterson of Billings, Wes Peterson of Houston and Gene Peterson of North Carolina; her three sons and their wives, Gary and Sheri Pogue of Billings, David and Marilyn Lyons-Pogue of Billings, and Ronald Pogue and Kye Cochran of Quechee, Vt.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at First Baptist Church, corner of Third Avenue North and Division Street, with interment to follow at Terrace Gardens Cemetery. The family asks that any memorials go to St. John's Lutheran Home Endowment Fund, 3940 Rimrock Road, Billings MT 59101.

All completed their higher education with advanced degrees from either Gonzaga University, Spokane Wash., or Montana State University, Bozeman. Darlyne's life was devoted to raising her family and caring for her parents, especially in their later years. Darlyne will be remembered by her winning smile, great sense of humor, warm and generous heart, tremendous courage and her ability to make everyone she met feel special. She gave unselfishly from her heart and expected nothing in return. Many times, she did without so others wouldn't have to. The many friendships she made along the way were lifelong ones. She was a wonderful cook and avid gardener with a special love for growing roses. Darlyne loved all kinds of music and loved to dance - and she was really good at it. Throughout her life, Darlyne held a variety of employment positions and truly enjoyed the many people she came into contact with. Greetings, I am researching my family tree and located some informationg I may need help with. The RIEDEL family were born in Germany but had settled in Saratov on the banks of the Volga river. Apparently they had a large mill in the area. I am unsure of their names but I know that Marta RIEDEL was born in Saratov in the 1880's. I hope someone may be able to direct me to baptism, marriage & death records or business and census records for the area. Regards Jon OLDFIELD.

We no longer have a VC for that village but I wondered if any of you had any ideas that would help this woman. If so, let me know and I'll send you her e-mail address. Thanks Dennis Zitterkopf
