Carl, What an interesting coincidence! One of my great-grandfathers was naturalized in Bay City Michigan, and my maternal grandfather was born there. My mom's whole family came through Detroit from Canada. I've had good luck obtaining naturalization papers for Michigan. Go to this web site. http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17449_18635_20684---,00.html Scroll down to Bay County. The files are grouped alphabetically. I see two Godfrey Peils and three Gottfried Peils. Print out that page so you have the box and folder numbers. Now go back to the main page and click on "Archives of Michigan Requests" and follow the instructions on that page. They are very nice and very fast - when I ordered my great-grandfathers documents I got them in about a week. Let me know if you need any other help. Thanks for your reply. My father Godfrey H Peil, [b. Jan.27, 1909, Holstein/Rudick, Russia], [still living] thinks he filed the papers about 1941, in either Bay City, MI, or he said he may have gone to Detroit, MI. while Dad is still in good mental health, who remembers something for 60 plus years. Since my grandpa, [Henry Peil Sr.] did not get his citizenship papers before Dad was 21 years old, Dad had to get his own citizenship papers. I checked and it seems Michigan does have an archive. I will try them. If anyone has dealt with Michigan and has some advise I would appreciate any tips.Carl Peil ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. There used to be a nice web site for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) where you could print a form and mail it in requesting naturalization information. The old web site is gone and the best I could find is http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=34139c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=34139c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD At the right you can click on "G-639 Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act Request". At the bottom of that page click on Download to get a copy of the form to mail in. Sally Seattle, WA
Carl, You have to know where your father was living when he filed his declaration of intention, and where he was living when he filed his final papers. These events could have occured in two different places. Please post back to the list and tell us if you know where he was living - someone may have researched that locality and might be able to help you. Once you know where he might have filed, you have to then look for an index of Naturalization filings for that locality. There is no comprehensive nationwide index of Naturalizations, however, you will find that there are numerous indexes prepared by state and local genealogical societies, state historical societies, etc. Sometimes the papers are archived at the State archive, and the archive will have an index; some are archived at the National archives. It all depends on the courthouse where he filed. Here is a web site that lists some online indexes of Naturalizations: http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/naturalization.html Good luck in your search. Hello, Depending upon where you live and the time that he became a citizen. In most cases if the area is rural or doesn't have a Federal Court house the papers are all filed at the local county court house. These records should be available in your state archives or as in the case of the State of Washington the Regional Archives. For the federal courthouses they are divided up into regions and there is a regional federal archive that would have the records. For Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and part of the Montana they are available the the regional archives on Sandpoint Way in Seattle. You also need to be aware that a person could file their declaration or 1st paper in one place and become a citizen in another which makes trying to find citizenship papers more fun. Also if the person served in the armed forces especially during WWI where they either discharged or served would be the place where the papers were filed. In our area the a thousands of records filed for what is now Fort Lewis and what was then Camp Lewis at the federal archives in Seattle. Service in the armed forces was the fastest way to become a citizen because you became one upon discharge or during service. Hope that this doesn't confuse to much.
