Hello to all: I am trying to help a friend locate information on her husband's ggrandfather. He was born 1823 in Baden Baden, Germany. pledged Allegiance here on 9/22/1856. We do not know the location, nor when he came over from germany. Need some advice on this one, as I'm not sure if he came directly here from Germany or if he came via Russia. He settled in Western Missouri, then on to Kansas. Thanks for any help. Thelma Mills -- http://www.mariental-louis.com/

Hello, I was wondering, does anyone know or have infomation on Conrad Burbach, Born: 18 Jan 1864 Norka , Russia, and/or his wife Elizabeth Green, Born: Feb. 14, 1864 Norka, Russia? They are my great Grandparents. I don't even know if I am sending this to the right address so everyone can see this on the roots web subscribe list? Could someone help me? Would appreciate a reply. Thanks, Sally, Marieliz@citlink.net
An observation. You will note that the first child of Peter Wittmann and Katherine Beil that was born in Victoria KS is Heinrich. His baptism record states that he was baptized in Herzog/Victoria 24 Oct 1888. This indicates that the family came to the U.S. between 1886 and 1888 I have church marriage records for Herzog only to 1900. Hi Paula, Did you look through the PDF I just sent you on the Wittmann family? Johann Wittmann born 1835 came to the US on the S.S. Mosel on July 29, 1876. Look though the PDF I sent and I have it marked which children came on that ship. In the book, Migration from the Russian Empire Vol. 1 Jan 1975 - Sept 1882 they list the families of Wittmann. Johannes Mother, Catherine born 1814 also came to the U.S with this family. The book also lists a Peter age 37, wife Catharine age 35 and children Anna age 8, and Joseph age 1. Peter was the brother to Johannes. Hope this helps. Look through the attachment I sent you and if you have any questions please let me know. I don't know anything about Anna except she was born April 19, 1880. I know there was a family in Garden City, KS named Paul Schupman and I always knew we were distantly related through the Wittmans but never really knew how until now. So I will have to do a little more work on that side of it. My mom is still very sharp on all these folks even though she is nearly 90 and I'll visit with her tomorrow and see what I can find out about the Schupman connection. I can't send the pictures tonight becaue I can't get my scanner to work but my son will take a look at it tomorrow and I'll try tomorrow night. My thoughts on where Peter Wittman(born 1855 - I'll put his birth year in to seperate him from all the other Peters) and Catharina Biel are from, come in part from the 1857 census from Liebenthal Russia which we have thanks to Kevin, Tony Leiker and Tony's cousin Pavel Leus. Both the Biel and Wittman families were living there when the census was taken. Katharine (all spellings from book) was born to Peter Beil and Elisabeth in 1854 in Graf. Peter was born to Heinrich and Elisabeth in 1855 in Rohleder. Since Liebenthal was a daughter colony founded about 1857, both families probably moved there shortly after the children were born. According to "Liebental, Russia a Genealogy of the Village" compiled by Tony Lieker, Katharine Biel and Peter Wittman were married there July 15, 1875. I don't know if they were still living in Liebenthal when they immigrated or not. My interest is peaked now and I can see I will be pulling out the old files and doing a little more on this family. Kevin, my question on this family - did they really come on the Mosel. If so are they the ones Rev. Laing referred to. If not when and how did they come. That's enough for tonight. Hi Frank, I haven't really worked much with the Wittman's except as they pertain to my Biel family and I too am confused about the Wittman's on the Mosel. The group of Wittman's that Rev. Laing refers to actually number 13 on the passenger list and I don't believe they are my Wittmans. I say mine came on the Mosel because that information was in Die Herzoger. I still need to make my way through those 1454 souls to see if there isn't another family that can be mine. The group on the passenger list are: Johann age 41 Anna 38 Alexander 11 Anna 14 Johannis 7 Michael 2 Andreas 4 Peter 6/12 Catharina 62 Peter 37 Catharina 35 Anna 8 Joseph 1 I think they are on pages 740 and 742 of Die Herzoger. That would be Johannes Wittman son of Alexander and Katherine (Folwerk) Wittman and his wife Anna Catherine Brungardt. The ages are right for this family. Catharina age 62 is his mother and Peter age 37 and Catharina age 35 are his brother and sister in law. Could that Peter born March 10, 1838 and married to Katharine Nussbaum be yours? Is my thinking sound on this? The names seem to work for my family but not the ages so I'm still looking for mine. Hope I haven't muddied the waters too much. Hello Paula, Maybe you can help me clarify some Wittman questions. Rev. Francis Laing in his book, German Russian Settlements in Ellis County , Kansas wrote of the Mosel. 1454 souls took passage on the Mosel. Among thse listed were "John Wittmann (8), Peter Wittmann (3), Martin Yunker (8) , Peter Yunker (4), all of Herzog, Russia." "All of these , excepting Peter Yunker, who remained in Topeka until 1877, made their home in Herzog, arriving in Victoria August 3, 1876." If I am reading this correctly, there were 11 Wittmanns on this passage of the Mosel. I have a greatgrandfather, Peter Wittmann who arrived in Victoria in this migration. Perhaps you can tell me how he fit into this grouping. The four villages of Rohleder, Herzog, Graf and Marienthal were all within a stone's throw of each other, so where they lived in Russia was probably quite fluid, depending on the year. Liebenthal was only a short distance down the Karman River. And the repeat naming pattern will drive you crazy trying to figure out whether they are brothers; uncles cousins, sons and etc. Perhaps DNA is the only real way to answer the question. We do have our Peter Wittman's Y DNA on file.
