For those interested in getting a copy of a complete church book (birth, death, marriage), Volgograd now indicates that they have different rules and they will copy a whole book at $2 per page. For people interested in ordering records for a surname from Volgograd, please look at the bottom of this page: http://www.dobrinka.org/archives/Volgograd_archives_research.pdf There is information that has been added to the bottom of the page which tells you how to formulate an order for Mila. Hi, all, You might check with a Teacher's Supply Store. I know that they can laminate some of the large charts I've needed for work and they were considerably less expensive than Kinko's. They might be able to do some color copy work too. Karen Albright Eureka, CA (Harras, Helmuth)

I want to reiterate what I have said about getting charts done at the Volgograd Archives. First, when inquiring about ordering a chart, are you ordering for a surname from a village where there are fairly complete records. The only villages I see at Volgograd where that is true are Dobrinka, Kraft, and Beideck. If there are records for a village at another archive, Volgograd personnel will not go to the other archive to get records. Also, Mila has no control over how long it might take to get a chart completed at Volgograd. The time listed is the length of time it has taken in the past. All she can do is place the order and wait for completion. Gary Martens
I had someone with a name in Russian email me 3 photos, to the email address on my Dobrinka web site. The message only said "Dobrinka today". The photos are here, on the bottom of the page: http://dobrinka.org/today.html I've never been to Dobrinka so I have no clue whether these are authentic, or not. Is the lake on the Volga behind the dam this wide at Dobrinka? I don't see the church that Ed Hoak talked about in this trip report there from May 2001. Comments please, from anyone that has been to Dobrinka, or to villages in the southern part of what used to be Saratov Province. Gary Martens Dobrinka VC
I have received some additional information on what records are at the Volgograd Archives. You can get to the table of information by going here and looking at the Volgograd Archives section: http://www.dobrinka.org/archives/ Or just to that page here: http://www.dobrinka.org/archives/Volgograd_archives_revised.pdf Note that the list is not in order by German village name. There is also what appear to be Black Sea area villages on the list, since I don't see these village names in Richard Sallet's list of village names, but I do see the names in the master village name as being from the Black Sea area. If anyone recognizes names and knows of alternate German names or Russian names that aren't shown, let me know. Gary Martens
Gary, thanks for posting that link to Wholly Genes. Their prices are SUBSTANTIALLY less expensive than generating the color chart yourself in, for example, PAF companion and taking it to Kinkos and having color copies made of an oversized format. Does anybody have any other solutions for duplicating large charts in color? My PAF companion generated chart for my mom's ancestors is 2 feet wide by 20 feet long. It can be copied in black and white on the large format machines at Kinkos at a reasonable price, but the price for color copies is crazy. > >For those of you that are dead set on having a chart, here's a way of doing >it. Tim and Rosi, I made an inquiry as to the lyrics of a song my Father sings, "Heit Net Hom, Heit Net Hom," and you said I could find it in your book, "Thunder on The Steppe," and we did purchase the book. It is a wonderful book and I was so excited to find my Dad's songs. Yes plural, songs. He sings the song "She is not pretty", I don't have it in front of me, it is being passed around, so I can not spell it in German. This song he could remember except for the last line so this was a bonus for us. Thank you for writing the book and the pictures were great as well. I love the GV list! For the person that was interested in Stephan village, the following records are available: births: 1836-1850, 1901-1902 deaths: 1836-1859, 1904 marriages: 1836-1864, 1894-1895, 1905 Gary Martens
Some more information on surname charts. For those of you that absolutely want a surname chart, here are the problems. If you wanted to have a surname chart made at Volgograd, it depends on what records are available for the village or villages at Volgograd. This is part of the reason that it takes Pleve and his researchers so long to generate a chart. Records for a given village could possibly be in 3 places, or they have big gaps, or no records. Apparently they are still finding records mixed in with other village records. I'm sure that daughter colonies are even more of a problem, because most of the villages created after about 1853 have no census, and may have no other lists of any kind about people. Then what about church records? Do they even exist, or are the records mixed in the parish church for that area? The resarchers try to start out with a chart that includes the 1775/1798, 1818, 1834, 1850 and 1857/1858 census. If that information isn't available, then they have no basis for the chart. Some families moved from one village to another in the early 1800's, so they need census records for multiple villages. Take a village like Galka, census records are apparently at Saratov and Volgograd. I know this because I ordered census records (from Pleve) for a surname from Galka back in 2000. I received the census for 1850 and 1857 almost immediately, so they are at Saratov. I received the census for 1834 and 1816 about 5 weeks later, so I figure they are at Volgograd. Volgograd only has church records for Galka, after 1860 to about 1900, with gaps. Take Dreispitz, which was founded in 1766. There were people that moved from Dobrinka, and possibly other villages, to Dreispitz in the early 1800's. Even if there are census records available, there is no information available from 1858 to about 1900. What's church records are available are Births: 1901-1902; Deaths: 1903, 1904; Marriages: 1894, 1895, 1905. Apparently even the large village of Frank has records at Saratov and Volgograd. Volgograd is 100 miles from Saratov, so it's an archive where researchers that live in Saratov go to every month or so. Engels is just across the river and easier to get to. So that's the dilemma which extends to many villages. For those of you that are dead set on having a chart, here's a way of doing it. Buy all the records that you can for a surname and enter the information into your database. Then have Wholly Genes generate a chart for you: http://www.whollygenes.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=WG&S creen=GOTCHARTS They taken input from The Master Genealogist, Family Tree Maker, Legacy and PAF. The prices are: 3' x 3' chart $19.95, 3' x 10' chart $29.95, and 3' x 25' $69.95. If you use some other program, I can convert your database into an acceptable format for Wholly Genes.
