    3. Hello, list, Can someone on this list tell me how far it would have been from Mueller to the village of Kamenka? And how likely is it that a young man from Mueller would marry a young maiden from Kamenka? Also is Katerina and Katharina likely to be the same person? I'm grasping at straws here! 3. Hello, I am new to the list and researching my Lipphardt family from Norka. I already have all the data from the 1767 List of Colonists, and the census of 1775, 1798 and 1834. I am interested in information prior to my immigrant ancestor Christoph Lipphardt (1736-1790's), any census between 1798-1834, and any Lipphardt's in Norka after 1834. My particular branch moved to Schaffhausen (northernmost village) after 1800, but I am interested in family who remained behind in Norka. Thank you, Patrick Lipphardt Ancestral villages of Norka and Schaffhausen

    1. [GV] Migration map, Ukraine question.
    2. frank jacobs
    3. Greetings, Can somebody tell me where I can locate the German migrations to Russia map on line? I have it somewhere in my "non filing" system. I have been notified by FamilytreemakerDNA that my ancestor of the period of the Wars of Religion shares ancestry at the 25 marker level with a person who migrated from Staraya Ushitsa, Ukraine. I am of Volga German extraction, so I am left with two hypotheses : 1. This common ancestor migrated in an exodus from bloody German 400 years ago at the height of the Wars of Religion, or 2. later Volga migrants relocated to the Ukraine? I am not familiar with either, and there may be other explanations. Is it likely one could locate a small village of Staraya Ushitsa, Ukraine? Any enlightenment would be appreciated. Frank Jacobs

    1. [GV] Obit, Elsie E. (Kinsfather) Chapman
    2. Henry L. Schmick
    3. Billings Gazette Billings, MT 6 Sep 2007 CHENEY, Wash. - Elsie E. (Kinsfather) Chapman died on Monday, Sept. 4, 2007, in Cheney, nested in the love of her beloved family. Born on Nov. 5, 1912, in Billings, Elsie was a lifelong Montanan, spending her formative years on the family farm (the Evergreen Farm) west of Billings. She was the surviving child of the six children of John and Helena Kinsfather. Brothers Harry, Walter, Johnny and Earl and sister Julia preceded her in death. During the '40s, '50s, and early '60s, she and her husband Jack Chapman operated first the Pitchfork Bar Dude Ranch outside of Cody, Wyo., and then the 4K Dude Ranch in Dean, Mont. She was the ultimate hostess, winning friends and admirers nationwide. Mom never finished the book she was "always going to write" - a book on dude ranching - most especially an extended chapter on "cooks I have known." Knowing her sense of humor, it would have been a rib buster. Her lifelong gifts to her children Skip, Brad and Candy, niece/daughter Joyce Cernohlavek and to her extended family included her sense of humor, love of family, sense of responsibility and an acute sensitivity for the feelings of others, not to mention her fantastic recipes and love of flowers. In her later years, she was a homemaker living in Absarokee and Billings, spending many hours as a Pink Lady volunteer in local hospitals, card player and tireless gardener at her home. Following in the tradition of her much-loved father John, Elsie was an extraordinary gardener who willingly shared her knowledge and her flower gardens with family and friends. She anticipated every spring to once again work the soil and nurture a bountiful, colorful garden. Her last years were spent with her family in Spokane. Her cherished grandchildren are Erika Chapman, Jennifer Hall, Kyle Strauch, Kathleen Sliger and Lara Chapman; and six great-grandchildren, John Henry Sliger, Brandon Hall, Kristina Duncan, Kimberly Duncan, Michael Strauch and Pruedence Strauch. A viewing will be held on Friday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Dahl Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Interment will immediately follow the service. Published in the Billings Gazette on 9/6/2007.

    3. I forgot to mention Brent, thanks Dona. Brent has done a fantastic job on many of these records! There are also a number of other people that have been able to obtain census records, Rosemary Larson, Darryl Boyd, Ted Gerk, Nick & Barb Bretz, and many more. It would be nice to have these, and their compilers listed somewhere where we as a group would know what is already compiled and available so that we don't spend more money getting something that has already been done. Something else for out group to debate and discuss! _____ From: Reeves-Marquardt, Dona [mailto:dr03@txstate.edu] Sent: Wednesday, September 05, 2007 9:10 AM To: Kevin; ger-volga@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [GV] Census Records Other village census records are available from Brent Mai <bmai@cu-portland.edu> Dona Reeves-Marquardt _____ From: ger-volga-bounces@rootsweb.com on behalf of Kevin Sent: Wed 9/5/2007 8:54 AM To: ger-volga@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GV] Census Records I do have some census records that I have compiled on my web site. 1. [GV] Obit, LaVera Rose Olson Ehrlick
    2. Henry L. Schmick
    3. Billings Gazette Billings, MT 4 Sep 2007 LAUREL - With grace and courage, LaVera Rose Olson Ehrlick, 78, won her five-year battle with Alzheimer's disease and went to her eternal home to be with family, friends and her savior on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007. A woman who treasured family above all else, she had been surrounded by her family in her final days. She was born on May 21, 1929, in Windsor, N.D., one of 11 children born to Oscar and Josephine (Goodroad) Olson. She moved to Huntley Project when she was 13. The next year, she met her lifetime companion, Albert Ehrlick at a dance and she married him a year later. LaVera married Albert on her mother's birthday, Oct. 14, 1944. They lived in Laurel, where Albert built the family home, room by room, paycheck to paycheck, over the course of six years. She loved to travel and she fulfilled her dreams of seeing the world. She visited the Panama Canal, cruised to Alaska, took in the colors of New England in the fall, saw Hawaii with her family, enjoyed the shows of Branson, Mo., and crisscrossed the country on many bus tours. She enjoyed reading and listening to music. She was an avid fan of Lawrence Welk and rarely missed a Saturday night watching his television program. In her later years, she saw his orchestra and many members of the show, including Myron Floren and the Lennon Sisters, in person. Above all, her family was the center of her life. She kept track of all family - no matter how far extended - and the only home she ever lived in as an adult was always a place of love, laughter and very good cooking. LaVera is survived by her husband, Albert; children Linda (Jerry) Broderson, Darrell (Sally) Ehrlick and Guy (Teresa) Ehrlick; six grandchildren, Daron Faught, Dalayna Faught, Darrell (Angie) Ehrlick, Melannie (Jake) Nienaber, Jacob Ehrlick and Nathan Ehrlick; one brother, Donald Olson; three sisters, Esther Knaub, Marjorie Yakel and Bertha Craven; one aunt, Lydia Goodroad; and many special nieces and nephews. She would have also been thrilled to know she would be a great-grandmother in the next few months. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clarence, Albert and Martin; sisters, Dorothy Yakel, Elenora Wirtanen and Lucille Schwartzkopf. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the First Congregational Church, 506 S. Fifth, Laurel. Visitation for family and friends will be one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be in the Laurel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, Alzheimer Association - Montana Chapter or a charity of choice. LaVera's family would like to thank Big Sky Hospice for the compassionate care in the final days of her life. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel is in charge of the arrangements. 3. You can easily get many answers to these kinds of questions by accessing AHSGR.org. You will find what census data is available for different colonies for different years. There are some 1775 census data available and currently some 1834 census data. The 1798 census was the first so it is the most complete. You can purchase the data in 1798 for the whole village/colony. It has been published for quite some time by AHSGR. You should expect to pay for this research because there was cost to both acquiring and translating it. I am not as familiar with the GRHS holdings, but a look at their website should tell you what they are doing. Dr. Brent Mai is also working on census data and I'm sure someone on the list can give you his website - if not - Google it. The German Origins Project at AHSGR.org should also be of interest to everyone - as new information about the original colonists comes in from family researchers who are working on German origins, it is added to the data by village/colony. Also accessing the reports of Village Coordinators for your particular village can be very educational. Some coordinators are also very helpful to individual researchers and readily share what they have. Some Village Coordinators keep a database of families for their particular village. Look for a website for your particular village - some have them while others don't. For those who have been around a long time, these suggestions may seem repetitive. We have to remember we will always have new researchers joining us who don't have the knowledge about resources that others may have. I'm sure some of the others on this list have other helpful suggestions to offer new researchers. Lauren Brantner --------------------------------- Looking for a deal? Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov authorized the programme in Moscow which would aid the social and economic development of the ethnic German community in Russia. The aid will be offered for the building of houses and infrastructure, and for the improvement of education and health facilities. It is expected to particularly benefit regions in Western Siberia and along the Volga river. The programme is part of Russian efforts to halt the decline in the country's population. According to a UN study, Russia will need 2 million immigrants in the coming decade to maintain economic growth. According to official statistics, the number of ethnic Germans in Russia fell by 30 per cent between 1989 and 2004 to around 600,000. However, Russian media reports say that every year thousands of them return to Russia because of dissatisfaction with their new lives in Germany.
