    1. [GV] 1798 Census Look-up - Dreispitz, Hussenbach, Kaneau, Rosenheim, Stahl am Karaman
    2. Linda Otto
    3. Greetings List I am still searching for Heinrich Wilhelm Otto (born abt. 1785) in the 1798 Census. On the AHSGR site I find that there were Otto families in the following villages in 1798: Dreispitz, Hussenbach, Kaneau, Rosenheim and Stahl am Karaman. If any of you have the 1798 Census for these villages, I would really appreciate a look-up. On the First Settler's List for Bangert, there is a Konrad Otto, age 22, Lutheran farmer from Naussau-Usingen, Mittelhausen - wife Katharina Elisabeth, 22. Konrad Otto and Katharina Elisabeth Laut were married 17 Jul 1776 in Lubeck and arrived in Bangert on 1 Jul 1767. This couple is not in Bangert on the 1798 Census, but by the 1816/34 Census, the Heinrich Wilhelm Otto family is in Bangert with a son and grandson named Konrad. (They were not in Bangert in 1798) I am thinking that this is perhaps the link to our family, but need to find them in 1798. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Linda Linda Otto Gladstone, MB

She was born Oct. 1, 1934, in New Salem, N.D., the second daughter of Philip and Katherine Elizabeth Lang Reiner. She moved with her parents to Billings at an early age, and then to Klein, where her father worked in the coal mine. Ardis loved bowling, and for several decades she bowled in the Sunrisers League at the Sunset Lanes on Central Avenue; she won many awards for her bowling skills, and was secretary for the Women’s Bowling League for many of those years. She was an early green pioneer in her use and sales of Shaklee cleaning products. She enjoyed managing money, playing card games, especially cribbage and canasta, and doing crossword puzzles. For many years her favorite Sunday activity was working the diagramless puzzle with her friend Ann Sickler, and in the last few years she added the online Crickler puzzles to her daily routine. After she moved to Bonaventure, she found a new joy: riding through the halls on her three-wheeled electric scooter. 1. [GV] Wildfires in Russia come close to the Volga German villages - follow up
    2. Tanja Schell
    3. Hello everyone,   Here is just an update on the situation in the area near the village of Frank in the northern part of Volgograd region, on the border to Saratov region. News come from Vladimir Krainev, a resident of Zhirnovsk, the county town just a few miles off Frank.   "The remains of the houses that burned down (in Alexandrovka, a Russian village just across the river from Frank) are being cleaned up in piles and driven out. Officials have promised the people new houses for them will be built by December 1. In Alexandrovka, where 157 houses got burned down, the houses will be built on a new territory. People have been promised 2 mil rubles per household for rebuilding. Currently some small money are being paid out as a way of monetary support for just now.   New houses will all be standard. So that everyone gets to move into similar houses, no matter how big their previous houses were; whether they were 3-storey high or just a bungalow. This is because the majority of the houses have never been insured by fire insurance.   Frank has survived. The residents poured out on the streets and fought off the fire that moved across the fields nearby towards the village. There were about 200 cars in total: fire trucks, tractors, irrigation machinery. All buckets in local stores sold out. People were lining up and passing the water around to fight off the flames.   While in Frank the fire moved towards it from across the fields around the village, Alexandrovka was surprised by the flames that "jumped" across the river (presumably supported by strong winds) and nobody had time to understand what happened when the hell broke loose..."   Note: Vladimir Krainev is a driver in the local oil business. He is very familiar with the area around Frank because of his work. He likes hunting and fishing, and is a passionate photographer.   He had contributed many pictures of the former Volga German villages in the local area. Here are his photos of the beautiful Lutheran church in Walter taken from across the river from the village: http://erikas.cc/walter/newest_walter.htm   And the Russian website on Volga German has several photo albums of his photos of Dittel, Frank, Kolb and Neu-Denhof: http://www.wolgadeutsche.net/krajnew/_Dittel.htm http://www.wolgadeutsche.net/krajnew/_Frank.htm http://www.wolgadeutsche.net/krajnew/_Kolb.htm http://www.wolgadeutsche.net/krajnew/_Neu_Doenhof.htm     Regards, Tanja Schell Munich, Germany - Fargo, ND

    2. Hello List, Ran across an interesting article from Volgograd area http://www.volgograd-trv.ru/news.aspx?id=12370. This area has many archeological sites dealing with Mongols that have been plundered by novice archeologists and the local authorities have started to local authorities have begun arresting these individuals. Recently, a collection of the GR newspaper "Rot Front" mailed to Germany had been intercepted and declared part of the Russian cultural heritage and therefore illegal to move out of the country. This collection now resides in a local museum. Bill Doos

    1. Re: [GV] BRUN doe anyone know about this name?
    2. Sally, One place to start is the 1798 Census of the Volga German Colonies for males with the surname BRAUN as none is listed for BRUN: BRAUNs can be found in Brabander, Balzer, Hoelzel, Kamenka, Moor, Preuss, Rohlender, Shcherbakovka, Warenburg, Walter, Yagodnaya Polyana, and Zug. BRUHN in Norka [Note: spelling is probably BRAUN; see entry in Yagodnaya Polyana for a BRAUN man who resettled there from Norka]. So there are several possibilities for an original village, but I'd put my money on Zug or Rohlender considering their closer proximity to Katherinenstadt. However, considering the huge gap between 1798 and 1913, almost any village could be the birthplace of Emma Brun. Perhaps you can find later census revisions for Zug and Rohlender (as well as Katherinenstadt as you noted) to see if the surname continued in those villages (or in the case of Katherinenstadt whether a BRAUN family has appeared) so you could rule those villages either in or out. An inquiry to the Russian archives is of course the best avenue for Igor to learn more about his grandmother. Tim Weeder VC Paulskoye In a message dated 9/10/2010 9:57:19 A.M. 2. William Pickelhaupt
    3. Hi listers,   A translation of a Lutheran church history of the villages and cities on the Meadow side of the Volga, including Samara, and of Astrakhan, is being undertaken. If anyone would like to donate to help make this effort a reality, please let me know. It is planned to publish the translated work in early 2011. If all goes well, the history of the church on the Hilly side will be translated at a later date.   The following parish histories will be translated (note: a parish could and often did include many villages):   Volga Meadow side Lutheran parishes   Katharinenstadt Rosenheim Baratayevka (Bettinger) Privalnoye (Warenburg) Kukkus Reinhard Ryasanovka (Näb) Orlovskaya Krasnoyar Boaro/Boisroux Weisenfeld Paulskoye Fresenthal Eckheim Friedenfeld Schöntal Hoffental Brunnental Weimar Gnadentau Samara   Astrakhan Astrakhan   Bill Pickelhaupt

    3. There are references to wildfires in Norka's census of 1775, with 3 families losing their homes in fires started by lightning in 1770, and 38 families losing their homes in the fire of 1771 (Norka Census of 1775, footnotes on pages 34-35). "Norka, a German Village in Russia" by Olson & Reisbeck mentions Pastor Starkel putting out a wildfire on page 27; "There was a raging fire burning in the threshing field. Word was sent to Pastor Starkel who arrived in his carriage and quickly circled the fire several times while orally reciting a prayer. The fire did not burn beyond the tracks he had made and the nearby fields and graneries were saved." Pastor Starkel lived from 1839-1915, and this incident would have happened after 1900 since the account comes from an interview in 1981 of a witness to the event. Another passage from the same book on page 41 tells about several disasters including "two fires in 1872 and 1884 when much of the village was burned." 1. [GV] Need help
    2. I would appreciate someone's help. Could you look in the index of Pleve's Einwanderung in das Wolgagebiet 1763-1767, Volume 2 and Volume 4 to see if there are any Zieg names and if so, what community they are from. I already have information from Volume 1 and 3. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Bruce Benne
