Stahl, Kathryn H, Oct. 20, 1933- Nov. 23, 2010 Billings Gazette Billings, MT 25 Nov 2010 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the Crown of Righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me this day. 2 Timothy 4:7. ROUNDUP Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Kathryn H. Stahl, age 77, passed away quietly in her sleep on Nov. 23, 2010, surrounded by family. Our family had the privilege of caring for her during a five-year illness from complications of a stroke. Kathryn was born on Oct. 20, 1933, at Beadle Colony near Huron, S.D. In 1935, her family relocated to King Colony near Lewistown. She lived there until her marriage to Martin Stahl of Ayers Colony at Grass Range on June 14, 1953. From this happy union, 10 children were born. Family was everything to Mom and she poured her heart and soul into raising us to be good God-abiding individuals. During this time, she worked side by side with Martin in the colony's commercial dairy barn for 25 years. Kathryn also worked with Dad as his bookkeeper for the colony's farm and ranch business. Because she was so adamant that we receive a good education, she was instrumental in getting a public certified school district for the colony. She worked many years as the clerk for the Ayers Colony School. In 1980, the family moved to Fords Creek Colony, north of Grass Range. Kathryn's green thumb played a major role in many years of a huge and prosperous garden and greenhouse. She had many different jobs in her lifetime as a senior member of the colony and each one she took on with joyous enthusiasm. She loved any kind of handcraft and loved learning new things. Before her illness, she was taking computer classes. You're never too old to learn new things, she used to say. She especially loved going into classrooms with the grandkids to demonstrate with her spinning wheel. She wanted to make sure that our old way of life was preserved by passing on her knowledge of the Hutterite heritage, and she always supported and respected her children's choices. Kathryn semi-retired when the family moved to Kilby Butte Colony at Roundup in 1992. She still loved to garden, cook, and help in the colony's meat processing shop. Mom loved to fish and it was not unusual to see Angkela, with tackle box and fishing pole in hand, headed to the river with a trail of grandkids behind her. Surviving Kathryn is her husband of 57 years, Martin Stahl; daughter Kathy (Rev. Joe E.) Hofer of Regina, Sask., grandchildren Priscilla (Joel), Wesley (Edna), Diane, Janice, Martin, Erin and Valerie and great-grandkids Vanessa and Victoria; daughter Helen (Min. Ed) Stahl of Grass Range, grandchildren Pam (Sammy), Eric (Judy) and great-grandkids, Celine and Jethro; daughter Sarah Stahl of Luxemburg, Wis., grandson Luke and great-grandkids Leiba and Veda; son Rev. Steve (Sara) Stahl, of Roundup, grandchildren, James, Carla, Janet, and Gary, Son Joe (Mary Ann) Stahl of Roundup, grandchildren, Ivan, Carol, Leah, Kady, David, and Jacob, Son Tony (Ruth) Stahl of Shepherd, grandchildren, Reba, Megan and Cody and great-grandson, Gabe, Daughter Miriam (Gideon) Hofer of Cardston, Alberta, and grandson, Tobias; son George (Rosa) Stahl of Roundup, grandchildren, Nicole, Natalie, Conrad, Kelly, and Kimmie; daughter Abby (Tom) Hinthorne of Billings, granddaughter, Kendahl; and daughter, Barbie (Jay) Pelan of Roundup and grandchildren Aaron and Caitlin; brothers Reverend Sam (Sara) and George (Elizabeth) Hofer; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Joe) Hofer of Stanford; sister Susie (Dave) Stahl of Gildford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Kathrina Hofer; brothers, Jake and Joe Hofer; and three granddaughters, Michelle, Naomi and Kathleen. Funeral services will be on Friday, Nov. 26, at Kilby Butte Colony at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Kilby Butte Colony Cemetery. There will be a wake on Thursday, Nov. 25, throughout the evening. Wier Funeral Home of Roundup is in charge of arrangements. Rest in Peace, Our Sweet Mom!

I'm sure the village is the same one. I will explain why later. I have researched the Spomer brothers, Johann Peter and Johann Heinrich from their marriage, 10 Mar 1766 the Evangelicalische Kirche in Büdingen, on down through Russia. From which brother's line are you descended? The FSL from Beideck hasn't been found and I couldn't find them in the Kuhlberg List so, I cannot verify their origin. The best choice would be the church Parish records for Schierstein. Not all villages had a church so you will have to find the church Parish that the Lutherans of Schierstein attended. I usually use the German Guides to Parish Registers, by Kevan Hansen. This was a series of books of all the German Kingdoms, etc. that show the Districts, Kreis and the Church Parishes for the different religions. They also show the villages that belong to each Parish. The series has completed 33 of the proposed 55 Volumes. I have just ordered the 3 volumes for Hessen-Nassau in the Rhineland which is west and south of the Grand-duchy of Hessen. The website, if you want to order some volumes, is < http://www.familyrootspublishing.com > . All of this is to find the church parish of the village of Schierstein. I found the village, it is on the North side of the Rhine River, just southwest of Wiesbaden. The area is now in the Grand duchy of Hessen but it wasn't always. The boundary now is the Rhine River, but boundaries changed a lot due to wars and mergers. The Seven Years War (1756 to 1763) had just ended leaving devestation and death in its path. Many Germans were looking for a safer and better life. In 1763 Catharine of Russia sent out her invitation to settle new lands in Russia and that started the large migration to Russia. Many people searching for their ancestors back to Germany are confused about their origin. In the case of Schierstein, it is listed as being in Nassau by the Heinz family and being in Hessen by your Spomer family. I found only one Schierstein and it is on the border of the Grand Duchy of Hessen and the Province of Rhineland in Hessen-Nassau. The seven years war had many boundary changes and the Treaty of Hubertusburg, which ended the war in 1763, made more boundary changes. There was another village I recently researched that was supposedly in Rhineland-Pfalz but I couldn't find it. So, I went to the Grand duchy of Hessen and there it was, near the border of the Rhineland-Pfalz. For the German farmers that lived in those villages, they didn't care which Province claimed their village. That's why sometimes different members of the same family would give a different Province as the origin. I think the older individual would use the province they grew up in and the younger ones used the present province. I'm still working on finding the church parish for Schierstein because that would confirm whether your Spomers came from there. Those Parish Registers would also list the parents of the two brothers. Some of those records go back to the 1500's. The LDS microfilmed many of those church records and you can rent and view those films at your local Family History Center. (I just today received a letter from Linda Otto who has just received such a microfilm from another researcher and it has "Schierstein Church Record" on it. That film # is 1193450 and is in German Script). Good luck in your research and let me know if you need more help. Jerry Goertzen
Forgot to also send to Ger-Volga. Fran ----- Original Message ----- From: Jerry and Fran Goertzen To: Linda Otto Sent: Saturday, November 20, 2010 4:25 PM Subject: Re: Steinhauer Information Also Re: Anton Heinz (1747) Linda: I assumed you had all the Kulberg Heinz data and you were primarily interested in the Gottfried Bernard so I didn't include the data on Nicolaus' two other sons. On the ship list for 18 June 1766 there were actually 6 sons of Nicolaus listed. Traveling with him and his "new" wife, Elisabeth Johann (August), Gottfried (Bernard), (Johann) Wilhelm and Hartman (the son Elizabeth). Hartman and Elisabeth died enroute. Also on the same ship (Document #968 and 969) were two other sons of Nicolaus. Both of them were named Anton, one born 1740 and the other born 1747. Ivan Kuhlberg rarely listed both of the dual names of the colonists. One may have been Johann Anton and the other Philipp Anton. The name Philipp shows up often in the younger Anton's family. It was common that when a mother died and the father remarries, the older sons will go out on their own rather than stay with the step-family. Both Antons already had their occupations as blacksmiths and the older Anton was married, so they were shown traveling on their own. In the OSL for Straub (F#32), they were still listed together. Anton Heinz (b l740) and his wife Maria Magdalena (1744) and Anton's brother-also Anton. (b. 1747). They arrived in Straub 12 May 1767, the same day as Nicolaus and his family. In 1798, the older Anton doesn't show up. He may have died or moved, but I could not find any movement records. The younger son, Anton (b. 1747) is still in Straub (sr 20) with his wife, Eva Katharina Frick (1755) and their sons Philipp Peter (1773), Wilhelm (1779) and Johann Anton (1791). There were also two daughters, Maria Sybilla (1777) and Margaretha Elisabeth (1787). The August Heinz listing for 1798 Straub (Sr 45) is August (1755) and his second wife, Maria Elisabeth Schneider (1775) from Moor. Also his two children from his first wife, Maria Dorothea (1778) and son Joh Konrad (1793). The only unrelated Heinz in 1798 Straub (Sr 6) was the Friedrich Heinz family and they came from Kutter in 1788. I followed that family back to Germany and they came from Württenburg. I just received your email of Nov 18,2010, so I will include the answers in this email. Since the new Heinz child was one month old when Nicolaus and Elisabeth arrived in Oraniebaum (18 June 1766), most likely Nicolaus and Elisabeth were married before Aug. 1765. Lübeck was a port on the Baltic Sea where they colonists boarded the ships for Oranienbaum. It was usually only a short stay while they waited for an available ship but many marriages were performed there. I have the records of the six Lutheran Churches of Lübeck (Migration to Russia-Brent Mai). I didn't find them, naturally, because they were already married. Many of the colonsits gathered in Büdingen where a Russian Consulate was providing passports and visas to go to Russia. I have the LDS microfilm records of the Büdingen Lutheran Church back to 1767 but they were not there either. I feel they were married in Schierstein, Nassau where they came from. I haven't had time to check for the Parish of Schienstein yet, but that parish registry should have the marriage data of Nicolaus and Elisabeth as well as the death of his first wife, his parent's names, etc. That will have to come from an LDS microfilm of the parish records. As for the Steinhauers, a few years back, I did a research for a Steinhaur descendant in Stockton, CA. They first went to Fresno, CA. His line went back to the first son of Wilhelm Steinhauer, Heinrich Philipp (b.1772) in Warrenburg. While doing the research, I chedked both son's descendents so I also have your data down to and including Georg Wilhelm (b. 1828). I also have Wilhelm Steinhauer in the OSL and Kuhlberg lists. Let me know what you need. Jerry Goertzen ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Otto To: Jerry Goertzen Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2010 12:05 PM Subject: Steinhauer Information Hi Jerry, First a Heinz question - do you have access to any of the Marriage Records - Lubeck - are there others? If so, could you check Nicolaus Heinz (b - 1713) for me. He and the wife Elisabeth, mentioned on the Kuhlberg List may have been married just before they came to Russia. Steinhauer All the Steinhauers in Bangert go back to Johann Wilhelm Steinhauer, from 1798 Bangert Census, a widower from Warenburg, age 46 (born 1752). My guy is Johann Michael Steinhauer (b: 1850) >Georg Wilhelm (b: 1828) > Johann Georg (b: 1808) > Georg Friedrich (b: 1776) > Johann Wilhelm (b: 1752). This Michael Steinhauer came to Manitoba in 1901 - some of his older sons were already here. His wife, Maria Sophia Otto, had died in Bangert. They stayed in Manitoba until about 1907 and then moved to southern Saskatchewan (Flowing Well). One of his sons, Michael, moved to Fresno area, some stayed in southern Saskatchewan and some stayed in Manitoba. Thanks again Jerry for all your help. Linda Linda Otto Gladstone, MB

Here is some more information which I recently received.Horst Dear Friends, Please remember the Camps in your prayers. They will be in the U.S. at the end of January 2011. We pray that all goes well on this trip and that they travel safely. Pastor Camp's prayerletter is the "Oct2010.doc" attachment. God bless, Joan Kemmerer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leif-ELCI" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2010 8:10 PM Subject: a word for October This month we celebrate again the Reformation, the Ingrian Lutheran Church held its annual Synod, there was the usual business. I leave this weekend for Nizhniy Novgorod to do a parish seminar there--I will include that in next month's report. I wanted to get this to you all before I left. This month had some very interesting happenings--attached is my usual prayerletter and a bunch of pictures... GNturyo This month while I was away in Vladikavkaz, Zhanya organized and translated for a pro-life seminary at the parish in Turyo. She also distributed a couple of issues of the Good News journal to those who attended. Our supply of those journals is limited, so we try to put them to good use. There is a balance--they are a valuable resource, but they do no good sitting on our shelves in the office--they need to be put into people's hands so they can read them. GNvkigor--during my visit to Vladikavkaz and the parish there, I also gave several copies of an issue of the Russian version of GoodNews to Igor, the man who is studying to be the pastor to use with his congregation. Koltushevisit--this month I took the time to visit the Ingrian Seminary (where more than 100 students are studying in various programs). I met with several students I know to encourage them in their studies, met also with several pastors, visited Pastor Don Richman's class on prayer--in short it was an intense but productive visit. PastorAlexander--from Birsk stopped by the Ingrian Mission office on his way to attend the annual Synod. He is from the Ural district--the only district in Ingria I have yet to visit. Although I have an open invitation to visit a number of pastors and parishes there, I explained to Alex that I usually wait for a more concrete invitation. pastorAndrei--Pastor Andrei Vladimirov, who is working with the remnant parish in Veronesh in the Volga region spent some time with me. He later came to visit me at my apartment where we had a good talk and some prayer time. The parish in Veronesh is struggling because it has no permanent place to meet. PLTuryoDon--Pastor Don Richman, Lutherans for Life international liason, presented on the humanity of the unborn at the seminar Zhanya organized (she also translated for Don). PLturyoZDA--Don Richman, Turyo parish Pastor Alex Khlynov and Zhanya VKbeslancemetary--on the way from the Vladikavkaz airport to the city lies a relatively new cemetary where lie the remains of the victims of a terrorist act from a couple of years ago. Terrorists siezed a local school and ultimately the school had to be stormed by the spetznaz. Over 200 casualties all buried here. aaemailVKchurchservice--two pictures of the church service in Vladikavkaz (read the details in the attached prayer letter). TuryoKN--I also continue to work in Turyo mentoring the leaders. Karl and Nastya often have to come with me--here they are studying at a side table while I work. VKchurch--in 1904 the Lutheran Parish in Vladikavkaz built a new building. In 1927 the Communist government closed it and turned it over to the city's philharmonic orchestra. In October 2010 after 83 years the Lutherans again worshipped and celebrated the Lord's Supper in the sanctuary. Blessings, Leif

Bates, Opal Herman, Oct. 30, 1917- Nov. 15, 2010 Billings Gazette Billings, MT 18 Nov 2010 JOLIET Our mother, grandmother and friend, Opal Herman Bates died on Nov. 15, 2010, at St John's Lutheran Ministries, Billings. Opal was born in Golden Valley, N.D., to E.C. and Emilia Herman, the fifth of 11 children on Oct. 30, 1917. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith. Opal started school when she was 4 years old as she would not be separated from her brothers and sisters. The family later moved to Beulah, N.D., where she finished grade school and graduated from high school. Opal was confirmed and became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Beulah. Opal was married to the love of her life, Elmer Bates, on Oct. 30, 1939. To that union was born five children: Nicole, Shyla, twins Debra and Denton, and Robin. In 1958, Elmer was transferred to Savage, with Knife River Coal to start a new coal mine. While at Savage, they bought a small farm and kept more than busy with outdoor chores. Opal became a member of the First Lutheran Church at Savage. In 1987, Elmer and Opal moved to Joliet, where Opal joined the Joliet Lutheran Church, the Yo-Yo Club and the Garden Club. Mom was a special woman of great passions. Her love of her siblings was extraordinary, and we all enjoyed her stories of them hiking or singing harmony on the old piano. Opal's German heritage was her pride and joy as could be attested to by her ethnic cooking abilities. She loved teaching her daughters special German phrases. Mom thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. When she wasn't tending her vegetable garden or her flowers, she preferred to hike, collect rocks, watch birds and was amazed by cloud formations. Opal helped her family any way she could and showed her love with flowers and food. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed all her own clothes and those of her children and grandchildren. We love you Mom, Grandma, go with God! Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, of 62 years; her daughter, Nicole; and twins Debra and Denton; and all of her brothers and sisters. Opal is survived by Shyla (Harley) Sorrells of Joliet, Robin (Ed) Shaffer of Newport, Mich.; her granddaughters Shaye Zier, Sherry (Ron) Munoz, Stacy (Steve) Erb; grandsons Jadee (Janie) Sorrells, Travis Sorrells and Garett (Jacquie) Sorrells. The family will hold a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Joliet Lutheran Church.
