    1. [GV] Spomer of Marbach

    3. I'm sure there were other Spomers in Germany, But I only found the two brothers that went to Russia. There is a possibility of a relationship but you would have to go back in the Parish records to find it. I don't think that particular family left for Russia because you have the marriage record for 1816, which is much later than the 1766 of the Volga migration. Boundaries changed a lot in Germany over the years, so you have to find the time period you are searching to find the country the village is in. This one was easy. There are 8 (eight) Marbachs in Germany, three in Württemberg. When I saw one that used the name Marbach am Neckar, I knew I had it. Marbach is in the Ober Marbach area of Neckarkreis in the Odenwald area of northern Württemberg. It is northeast of Heidelberg and south of Michelstadt. Marbach had its own Lutheran Parish Church and the records have been microfilmed. The film number is 1187105 if you want to check it out. I had a nice email response from that same Dec. 6th email I sent. This was from Marven Weitzel and he does indexing for the LDS family search project. This project is planning on indexing the thousands of church parish microfilms in their vaults and they are calling on volunteers to do it. Marven Weitzel has indexed some of the German films but hadn't seen the ones I mentioned yet. He said he would order through his Family History Center in Texas. You may well want to contact him for further help. His email is < [email protected] >. I'm sure there are "project" workers at many other FHLs so other researchers should check their local FHC for names of indexes that may help them. You can also go to < www.familysearch.org > and see if the project has indexed the microfilm you are interested in. Once the film is indexed (in English), it will make searching the parish records much easier. Jerry Goertzen

    2. William Pickelhaupt
    3. Jerry,   I don't really know what you mean by collatoral families, but I haven't identified the German villages of those who married into the Pickelhaupt family in my ancestral village in Russia, with the possible exception of the Langolf family. I don't know what village the Pickelhaupts came from, as they are not on the Kuhlberg lists, in a First Settlers list or Transport list. Since the name Bickelhaupt seems to be an earlier form of Pickelhaupt, I have searched on the Family History Center website many times, and find about 30 plus villages with Bickelhaupts. Almost all are in modern Hesse, Upper Bavaria and Baden. The Pickelhaupt family in Russia does appear to have close ties with a Langolf family; the latter originated in Wuertzberg Rimbach. There is a modern day Rimbach on the western edge of the Odenwald.   Bill P. --- On Sat, 12/11/10, Jerry and Fran Goertzen <[email protected]> wrote: From: Jerry and Fran Goertzen <[email protected]> Subject: ODENWALD Parish Research To: "William Pickelhaupt" <[email protected]>, "German Volga Roots Web" <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, December 11, 2010, 11:53 AM I don't have that volume in my library, but your Odenwald area would be in the Grandduchy of Baden, Mannheim Bezirk, Kreis Mosbach in the northern tip of Baden.  Do you know any of the villages of your ancestors on the collatoral families?  There were a number of villages in the Odenwald area.  The Guide to German Parish Registers will locate a village and its parish and will give you the microfilm numbers of the Church Parish if they were filmed by the LDS.  You would need to go through all the village microfilms to find the names if you don't have a village.  The best way would be to contact one of the German Genealogical Resources or Archives (also listed in the book) for help to find your family. The book you would need would be Volum II of the German Parish Guides, "The Grandduchy of Baden".  This book also contains a brief history aand timeline of Baden and sometime they list books of town histories that have many names in them.  You can obtain this book by going to the Family Roots Publishing Co. website < www.GermanMapGuide.com >.
