    3. Hello All, My search for my grandparents, Jacob Hofferber & Katherine Margaret  Wiederspahn b. 10/1879 in Bethany, according to family records, but als o have seen it as Walter,  has l ed me to the caucasus. Grandma said she came from what sounded like Betchahorski. I t might actually be  Beshtaugorsky. My goal for the last 10 years has been to trace my heritage all the way back to the beginning, b/4 my family left for Russia. It was to be a gift to my Momma, the last living sibling of 10. Momma will be 90 in August, I fear my health has hindered me in my search, as well. Is there anyone who can do my fami ly tree for a resonable fee? Or, give me direct addresses where to look? I've purchased some books, find names, but it never leads anywhere. I am not very computer literate, another problem for me. Momma says there are Lesser's, Walter(s) may be my great grandmothers maiden name, &  Rupple's in the family, & only today did she tell me Kindsvatter is a name from her childhood, may not be a relative, she's not certain. I've had  help from a couple of you which I so appreciate.   Susan Hubenthal   "We are, each of us, angels with one wing and we can fly only by embracing one another." ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2011 9:14:05 AM Subject: GER-VOLGA Digest, Vol 6, Issue 22 Today's Topics:    1. This is going to be old stuff but here goes: There are no Yorks anywhere on the Volga. York is the American version of Georg and there are a number of Katherines who might match your Katherine "York" Georg. As for Balthasar Spomer, I think your birth year might be off a bit.....I'm not sure because the data I have on the family is not from a primary source. I think the data is probably from you and was sent to Kathy Brehm LaPella. Anyway....if Johannes was born in 1870 his father would have been born around 1850 or earlier and there are a number of Balthasar Spomers who are on the Spomer Charts for that time period who do not have spouses listed. ? All that is not at all helpful and the only way to resolve the problem is to have the Russian Archives do a little research for you. You have John George Spomer's birthdate as Aug. 27, 1881 in Beideck... It would not be too difficult?a task for them to find his parents and siblings. ? Unfortunately, you'd have to find a Russian speaker to phrase the request for you and that is not an easy thing to do these days. Because you have?Johann George Spomer's birthdate and the names of his parents, it would likely cost you about a hundred bucks to find the info on his parentage and siblings. Engels (if you send them a request) will come back with an estimate of what it will cost you and tell you where to send the money (they want the money up front). ? There are a number of Russian Language capable folks on the GR listservice but I would not presume to name them for fear of starting a stampede of people requesting their services. ? If you happen to have any Spomer or Georg acquaintances in Russia, it would be much cheaper to have them order the data from Engels....The Archives charge foreigners twice the fees they do resident Russians. ? That really helped. Like you I do not find your man in the Kuhlberg Lists, just like my Kraus ancestor. However, I think your man is in the Herzog FSL at #25, listed as Johannes Krenzer single age 18 from R?ding, Bayern.? Bayern in that FSL stands for Kurbayern -- the Grand Duchy of Bavaria.? Kurbener surely is someone's corruption of Kurbayern.? And Rudin surely is a corruption of R?ding.? I think someone simply copied Kurfalz into the list by mistake. I tried to find both R?ding and Rudin.? No luck. In the Map Guides to German Parish Registers to which you were referred yesterday, there were only three places listed in Bavaria for which it seemed possible to me R?ding itself could be a corruption: R?gen -- but unfortunately it was in 1765-67 in the Duchy of Coburg, a completely different country from the then Kurbayern, R?dern - same story -- it was then in the Bishopric of Bamberg, a completely different country from the then Kurbayern, R?densdorf - same story -- it was then in the Margravite of Bayreuth, then a subsidiary of the Kingdom of Prussia -- a thorn in the side of Kurbayern. 3. Many thanks for the additional info.  That really helped. Like you I do not find your man in the Kuhlberg Lists, just like my Kraus ancestor. However, I think your man is in the Herzog FSL at #25, listed as Johannes Krenzer single age 18 from Röding, Bayern.  Bayern in that FSL stands for Kurbayern -- the Grand Duchy of Bavaria.  Kurbener surely is someone's corruption of Kurbayern.  And Rudin surely is a corruption of Röding.  I think someone simply copied Kurfalz into the list by mistake. I tried to find both Röding and Rudin.  No luck. In the Map Guides to German Parish Registers to which you were referred yesterday, there were only three places listed in Bavaria for which it seemed possible to me Röding itself could be a corruption: Rögen -- but unfortunately it was in 1765-67 in the Duchy of Coburg, a completely different country from the then Kurbayern, Rödern - same story -- it was then in the Bishopric of Bamberg, a completely different country from the then Kurbayern, Rödensdorf - same story -- it was then in the Margravite of Bayreuth, then a subsidiary of the Kingdom of Prussia -- a thorn in the side of Kurbayern. I fear I have not been of much help.  I will try to think some more, but cannot promise anything.  Dick --- On Wed, 1/19/11, Sheila Derevage <[email protected]> wrote: From: Sheila Derevage <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [GV] Guidence on researching Kreutzer family in Germany To: "Dick Kraus" <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:40 PM #yiv1218465552 #yiv1218465552yiv1925694313 {height:100%;color:#000000;font-size:12pt;font-family:Arial;}Thank you for your help Dick.  This is what I have Johannes Kreutzer b. 1752 in Rudin,Kurfalz, Kurbener, Germany he died 1842 in Rohleder, Russia.  He was married to Eleonora Lauber 1773 in Herzog, Russia. 3. Shiela, I would suggest that you contact Jerry Goertzen, regarding the 40 books designed to map out the "counties" of the 40 major regions of archaic Germany, and the subparishs contained within each. If one had access to the volumes one might scan the indexes for a familiar locality. Of course it would be useful if you could narrow the region down to specific states or provinces. If I remember correctly, Jerry had a librarian like position, and was responsible for purchases a majority of these volumes for his chapter's library. A sample of the type of data given is illustrated in the case below, described by Jerry Goertzen. "I don't have that volume in my library, but your Odenwald area would be in the Grandduchy of Baden, Mannheim Bezirk, Kreis Mosbach in the northern tip of Baden. Do you know any of the villages of your ancestors on the collatoral families? There were a number of villages in the Odenwald area. The Guide to German Parish Registers will locate a village and its parish and will give you the microfilm numbers of the Church Parish if they were filmed by the LDS. You would need to go through all the village microfilms to find the names if you don't have a village. The best way would be to contact one of the German Genealogical Resources or Archives (also listed in the book) for help to find your family. The book you would need would be Volum II of the German Parish Guides, "The Grandduchy of Baden". This book also contains a brief history aand timeline of Baden and sometime they list books of town histories that have many names in them. " I do have this particular volume, but it does not list the region you seek. This is only illustrative of the vast amount of data contained in these volumes, if you can narrow your search, or live near a library where you could scan their contents for the region you seek. Hergett, Richard, Jan. 13, 1913- Jan. 15, 2011 Billings Gazette Billings, MT 17 Jan 2011 • • LAUREL — On Jan. 15,2011, God has called home to heaven Richard Hergett, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at The Crossings in Laurel at 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011. Dad passed away two days after celebrating his 98th birthday. Richard Hergett was born on Jan. 13, 1913, weighing 13 pounds, in Park City, Mont., to Lewin Hergett and Julia Runk Hergett. Richard was the oldest child in a family of six children. Richard received the gift of Holy Baptism on Feb. 2, 1913, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Park City by the Rev. H. T. Rauh. Richard publicly confessed his faith and was confirmed on April 1, 1928, in Billings. Richard was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Laurel. Richard married his sweetheart, Anna Mary Gross, on March 3, 1935, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Park City, Mont. They began their married life farming with his father, and then later bought a farm of their own west of Park City where they raised their four children. In 1949, they moved to a home on Birch Avenue in Laurel where they remained for sixty years. During their early years of marriage, he worked on his father's farm and he also went to Lima, Mont., to work for one summer for the WPA where he built jack-pole fences. In 1945, he began working at the Laurel Leaf Refinery (now CHS), Laurel, retiring in 1975 after 30 years of employment. In his early years he was a boxer and had boxing events in Billings, Red Lodge and Joliet. His greatest love was for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. His love was showered on them all. His favorite pastimes were motorcycles, bowling, fishing and camping with his faithful fishing partner, wife, Anna. He especially enjoyed working in his yard and garden every year, both of which he kept to perfection up to the age of 95. Richard was a tall, big, strong, kind and gentle man who was loved dearly by all who knew him. We will miss him terribly but we know he and Mom are together in heaven. We love you, Dad. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Crossings for the loving care they gave Dad and to his friends at the Crossings, especially Herman. Special thanks to Pastor Arlo Pullmann for his visits to Dad through the years and for his prayers and words of comfort to our family during this difficult time. 1. [GV] how lucky we are in many ways
    2. A Russian who is my second-cousin found me and also found my German second-cousin via the internet. Our grandfathers were brothers in Katharinenstadt, born in the 1880's. My grandfather came to Portland, OR and one of his brothers settled in Germany in the early 1910's. The third brother stayed in Katharinenstadt and had five children. Now out of those five children only one, Victor, has surviving children that we know of. I'm told one of Victor's sister's was shot. Apparently they were all deported somewhere. In the 1950's Victor tried to find his other siblings but could not. Now Victor died when his son Igor Zitzer was only 9. Now Igor is searching for his family history and there is no one alive from his family to get information from. Except those of us who are descendants of the brothers who LEFT Russia. My German second cousin and I have been able to provide Igor with his Zitzer grandfather's ancestry. But Igor is searching for his grandmother's ancestry which we know nothing about. Even the Engel's archives apparently have no information beyond her name. He has come to a dead end. I think it is sad and ironic that someone who was born and raised in Russia has less information about his ancestry than most of us here have about our Volga German ancestry. Sincerely, Sally Zitzer

    3. Sorry, problems with my internet connection.   This link has info on the Miller family, including Vera's father Bruno Karlovich Miller.    http://www.wolgadeutsche.net/beljakova.htm   Bill Pickelhaupt --- On Sat, 1/15/11, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: [GV] Miller - Warenburg To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, January 15, 2011, 8:57 AM Mike and I contact Vera numerous times re the Miller family as we have  Millers from Doenhof. While she shared some of her heritage with the list,  she never really shared much of her Miller line with us. One would think  she had a genealogy program with her family in it, but if she did, we do  not know of it and would love to know if her line and ours intercepted.  Your best bet is to search the GV Archives looking for Vera Miller and  maybe you can find some of her notes there.
