Mary to Molly to Polly. This originates in Ireland where Mary is spelt Maire and Molly is spelt Maille - Maire to Maille to Paille is a lot clearer visually but the sounds are the same - Mary to Molly to Polly. Harold

I am looking at "Granny's Nickname; a Collection of Female Names, Nicknames and Various Spellings" compiled by Helen Smothers Swenson, printed by Ericson Books, Nagadoches TX. in 1981. On page 14 Mary and Mary Ann appear to use Moll, Mollie, Molly as possible nicknames. Ms. Swenson indicates on page 17 that Polly can be a nickname for Mary or Paula. I have read somewhere that Polly is a nicknames for Mary Jane.
