14MAR08 LADIES; Your' Briliance, and Beauty abounds in the aforementioned statements! This old warhorse is just dazzled, and confused. The one thing that has puzzled us from the git-go is the Migration Route of the *JAMES MONTGOMERY-(1736)-family from "WAXHAWS"?? (1)- Everyone agrees on *BOUNTY-PAYMENTS/GRANTS* for--"WILKES COUNTY"--, but at the sametime we have seen several Other References --"FRANKLIN,HANCOCK,JACKSON, and--"WASHINGTON"--{RE: [a] Himself[b]-JOHNjr.- [c]- "The GUN", and Head-rights fore each family Member all from SOUTH CAROLINA!!! (2)- Now add in the BOUNTY PAYMENTS/GRANTS from "GEORGIA SERVICE"!! [a]-For Himself [b]- "GA-HEADS-RIGHTS!!! Remember He was also Paid for-- *GEORGIA CITIZEN* ----[This is the $1000.00 Question---HOW???]! Could JAMES(1736)-have already had "LAND IN GEORGIA" before REV.WAR??? (3)- We think the main Confusion is that most of these Lands were Originally in "WILKES COUNTY,GEORGIA", until "HUGH L.MONTGOMERY" Finished his *INDIAN LANDS SURVEY"???????????????????????? Query This; all the LAND-GRANTS were issued for-- "WILKES COUNY-[what was], but Later became...??????????? Question off the top of our head- this *MR.HAWKINS*,[Hugh L.'s Boss]-is he the same "HAWKINS who lead the first group of Pioneers into what was called--*BROAD RIVER SETTLEMENT[DARTMOUTH] near FORT WILKES?? This early settlement was @ the Forks of "BROAD RIVER & THE SAVANAHA"???? This area became-*FRANKLIN*, and then later-'ELBERT & OGLETHORPE,ETC??? There were references to a "HUGH, JOHN & ROBERT MONTGOMERY" with our' "HINTON, BROWN & CLEMENTS???? WHAT DO YOU FOLKS THINK???? THANKS FO ALL THAT ALL OF YOU DO!!! BA Still Looking for "MONTGOMERY/HINTON/BROWN/CLEMENTS/FOSTER, Connections!!! ________________________________________ From: Judy Becker [mailto:jbecker@wtshlaw.com] Sent: Friday, March 14, 2008 3:43 PM To: 'Andrea Adams'; tommontgomery@cox.net Cc: 'Family Dog'; Ayers, B. J.; 'Mark Montgomery'; 'Judy Becker'; 'jeff.montgomery'; 'BRIAN MONTGOMERY' Subject: RE: MONTGOMERY Digest, Vol 3, Issue 31 Andrea, I thought that the land grant application which was signed by James was for Washington County. At the time they were giving out land in either Washington County or Franklin County. I did not think it was Wilkes County, even if Peter Boyles did go there. My recollection is that James asked for Washington, but I didn't see any evidence that he got that. Then he wound up in Franklin, which shortly split in half to make Jackson on the west side. The John L. Montgomery in the DNA study who has a distant relationship with us, and whose e-mail address has rockymt in it somehow (he is from Colorado), is a descendant of a John Montgomery who died in Washington, Georgia (which is Wilkes County). He gave me a piece of paper from a probate in that county in very early days which was a receipt signed by a James Montgomery relating to that estate. (The John from whom he was descended may have been the Executor or Administrator of the estate, rather than the Decedent.) I have compared that signature with the others we have of James (Petition of 1797; request for bounty land, etc.) and it does not seem to be the same. You should find his e-mail address when you can get back on line, and write him. On second thought I will go look it up on the DNA outline and send it to you. There location would become Hancock County. They settled around Sparta, Mt Efigy and Mt. Zion. I think the Mt. Zion Presby church location might have a historical marker up where it was. I don't know how to find the plats issued during the settlement. I want to look at the paperwork for Joseph Montgomery. Wilkes County was north of them. The land payment for Revolutionary service for the GA Militia was located in Wilkes County. I know Peter Boyles; the "Distiller" of Sparta received a payment of land in Wilkes County GA. He went there and settled for two years before moving to Jackson County GA. James Montgomery received payment in Wilkes County GA, going from memory I think he got 400 acres. He sold it to Benjamin Elsberry. The Treaty of Shoulder Bone Creek was given to Hugh Lawson Montgomery. Hugh went North all the way to Cherokee Corner surveying off the land, stipulated by the Treaty. Keep in mind there were several treaties written. The one agreed to was surveyed by Hugh Lawson Montgomery, but his boss Benjamin Hawkins signed it. The teenage word is on a document. There are many documents to this story. Will look for the one that says "teenage son". The Clements will in Sparta,GA lists Robert Montgomery, I thought this was Robin as the earliest proven ancestor. Cannot get into the study. Will recheck. ----- Original Message ----- From: Judy Becker To: 'Andrea Adams' ; tommontgomery@cox.net Cc: 'Family Dog' ; 'Ayers, B. I have worked this path. Here are some answers for you. Years ago someone went to the DAR records and saw that John died from "battle in Waxhaw". They rewrote it as "battle of Waxhaw". Then Ms. Cameron did her work and died. After she died a letter from James McConnell Montgomery to Andrew Jackson surfaced that said "John died as prisoner from the Battle of Hanging Rock." From there I pulled the record where James Montgomery, his father signed affidavits that his "teenage" son died a prisoner in Charleston. ANDI - WHERE IS THE REFERENCE TO "TEENAGE" SON? THE APPLICATION I HAVE SEEN DOESN'T USE THE WORD "TEENAGE" AND I THINK IT IS SOMEWHERE ELSE. His son lost his gun and James wanted two things; his sons pay for service and payment for the gun. Thus I was able to combine payment records with James McConnell Montgomery's letter. I don't know what happened to the gun, or how James Montgomery knew his son lost it. O! ne of the records said the "enemy stole it". The government replied to James Montgomery that they were not going to pay for the gun unless it was appraised by a "duly sworn appraiser". James went out and got sworn in as an appraiser and reapplied for payment. They did pay him for the gun and the service days. He then left Waxhaw for Washington County, ie Hancock. WASHINGTON COUNTY GEORGIA IS NOT HANCOCK COUNTY. HANCOCK COUNTY IS WHERE SPARTA IS. WASHINGTON COUNTY IS WHERE SANDERSVILLE IS. He left Waxhaw right after he received his money, for both his sons payment and his payment. By the way, he received payment in the form of a note, and sold the note for cash (less than face value), to Thos. Wells who was brokering the notes. (I am trying to see if I can find John Montgomery's grave on Camp Creek. Probably not, they more than likely tossed him overboard.) I am interested in the John Montgomery of Hancock. This was initially Washington County and it is near present day Sparta HANCOCK COUNTY IS NOT "NEAR" SPARTA. SPARTA IS A TOWN, HANCOCK IS THE NAME OF THE COUNTY IN WHICH SPARTA IS LOCATED.. I only have record of Joseph Montgomery receiving a land grant there, but James McConnell Montgomery picked up his bride there. James McConnell's older brother, Hugh Lawson Montgomery was there at the signing of Treaty bone DO YOU MEAN THE TREATY OF SHOULDER BONE CREEK? (AT LEAST I THINK THE LAST PART IS CREEK.). He was an assistant surveyor to Benjamin Hawkins, who was in charge of getting the Indians to sign the treaties. Hugh Lawson Montgomery would travel north to survey the land from the Indians according to the treaties. There is a DNA match of mine to a settler there in Hancock named Robin Montgomery.(DON'T YOU MEAN TO A DESCENDANT OF A SETTLER NAMED ROBIN. MY RECOLLECTION IS THAT ROBIN WENT FROM HANCOCK COUNTY GA TO GIBS! ON COUNTY INDIANA.) James Montgomery was issued a land grant in 1786 in Wilkes County GA, (WAS IT WILKES COUNTY, OR WASHINGTON COUNTY? THAT GETS CONFUSING BECAUSE WILKES COUNTY IS NORTH OF THERE, BUT THAT IS WHERE THE TOWN OF WASHINGTON IS LOCATED) but he sold that grant to Benjamin Elsberry. He never settled on that land. He followed the survey done by Hugh Lawson Montgomery and ended up settling in what is present Jackson County. Supposedly Joseph is James Montgomery's younger brother according to DC Montgomery. There is a DNA match between Joseph and James.(THE MATCH IS BETWEEN A DESCENDANT OF JAMES AND A DESCENDANT OF JOSEPH. I HATE TO SAY BETWEEN THE TWO BROTHERS THEMSELVES, AS THERE COULD HAVE BEEN ONE OR MORE MUTATIONS IN THE MIDDLE. WHY ELSE DO OUR TWO DNA DONORS HAVE A MINUS TWO MATCH AT 67????) Do you have a way to find the land grants for Hancock County? (WOULD THESE BE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR LAND GRANTS? OR LATER?) I am looking for Joseph's piece of land. He also owned the island adjoining his land. This would be, I think just NW of present Sparta. I thought for a long time that John Montgomery, 1st settler of Hancock was James Montgomery. But since one Robin Montgomery of Hancock was there, and his DNA does not align perfectly with mine, which means, he probably comes from that John Montgomery that was first there. (NOT NECESSARILY. COULD HAVE BEEN FROM SOME OTHER COUSIN. THAT IS JUST ONE POSSIBILITY, AND THERE ARE BOUND TO BE OTHERS.0) I hope I did not confuse you too much. Hancock, Washington, Sparta, Mt Zion, Efigy were all around the same area. (LIKE I SAID BEFORE HANCOCK IS A COUNTY, AND SPARTA IS A TOWN WITHIN THAT COUNTY. WASHINGTON COUNTY IS THE NEXT ONE OVER. SANDERSVILLE IS THE PRESENT COUNTY SEAT FOR WASHINGTON COUNTY. I BELIEVE MT. ZION AND EFIGY WERE COMMUNITIES IN THAT AREA IN OLDEN DAYS.) This was a sort of holding spot for the movement westward. Only Joseph Montgomery's land grant can tell us more. As soon as Shoulderbone was signed, with western lands to be available, AND the Revolutionary GA land payments were made, the Montgomery boys all left this area. I think my William Montgomery (James 4th born son) was 13 during this short time there. The school set up for the boys was Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church/Academy. Rev. William Montgomery was there at Mt. Zion during this period. Please provide any insight you can to this area. James McConnell Montgomery stayed in this area the longest. He evidently had his wedding there to Nancy Farlow. They gave birth to their first child there. But by the time this child was born, James Montgomery had already followed his son Hugh Lawson Montgomery north into present day Jackson County. It appears that James Montgomery was on the heels of Hugh Lawson Montgomery during that survey. Looking for any insight- Thanks, Andrea
