MARY PERKINS: LIST's: We have recently found out that an Ancestor of Ours-[in-GA-] with- ["NC","SC" Connections], Took In- *ORPHANS & Needy KIDS* - (circa early 1800's on)! MS. PERKINS-In your' Ancestors Situation, Was this the Norm, or the Exception??? Anyone out there know what the-*Standard PROTOCAL WAS*- In the Family' s Of The day- For Govn't,Census, Legal, Inheritance, etc.??? (1)- Were the ORPHANS, etc? Given the "FAMILY NAME"-If from a Family Member? (2)- What if from an "IN-LAW" Family Member??? (3)- What if from a "Non- Family"??? Hope to hear back soon. A number of times, the very young ones were given the surname of the family who raised them.
