Been Meaning to Ask? We have seen Intel that shows our *JAMES-1736* Enlisting in the- *BURKE MILITIA* and the *WILKES MILITIA*? Both articles show his Enlistment- [on the same/ exact date] in- *NOV1777* Question. Since *WILKES COUNTY, GA*- was the very FIRST of the Several Counties which were made "That Year-(in 1777?)"-, and *BURKE COUNTY* was made- LATER ON- that same year, you think there was just a Duplication of the same record? *BURKE COUNTY* is just a short Distance from *WILKES COUNTY* - [two counties apart]! This Samuel Montgomery b: 1764 married Eleanor (Nelly) Steen and next Margaret Crockett (b: 1770, said to have been daughter of Andrew Crockett and Mary McKin). It is the last statement that seems so simple, but is really tricky. But that's for another time. Samuel would have been a younger brother of James the father of James McConnell. I am attempting to answer some lingering questions about how and when people met and married. I pulled together the last e-mail over the weekend from the Internet and a series of Mecklenburg Co NC records I once bought from another project. Andrea Adams seems to be the expert here, and I have been reading her e-mails with much appreciation. As I get it, the DNA evidence is saying that the "Group 1" Montgomerys have a common ancestor, but he could have lived generations ago. Nothing I have seen in the records has ever made me think Hugh of the Waxhaws had any relatives next door in Mecklenburg Co NC. The majority of NC settlers were from Lancaster Co, PA. Some may have stopped in VA for a while. Time after time I see Pennsylvanians move to Rowan Co NC and then on to Mecklenburg Co NC. I still would like your opinion on whether first John's Martha was born a Montgomery or a Finley. I see some interesting stuff posted by Shanna Palmer who working on Josiah, the younger brother of your John. For example, "Notes for ROBERT MONTGOMERY: "Robert MONTGOMERY removed with his parents and family to Mecklenburg Co. NC ca. 1769. He enlisted with Col. Robert IRWIN in 1776 for a period of three months. He served in the companies of Capt. William ALEXANDER and Capt. John McKEE which fought the "Battle of the Mountains" against the Cherokee. In 1832 he received a pension for his war services at the age of 92." "4. Also one Jane Montgomery. The 1850 census confirms that Edward M(illington) was born ca 1815 in Georgia. His first daughter, Harriet, is listed as born in TN ca 1832. The ones born later were born in AL. The 1850 census confirms that James (husband of Lucinda) was born ca 1820 in Georgia. So, part of the mystery is: Where in Georgia were John's sons born? Sometimes the census records don't do much to help. There was one Saml Bicket and one James Bicket in Capt Ozburns, Mecklenburg Co, NC in 1810. There were James, William, and Joseph Becket in 1830. James, James, and John 1840. Based on 1850, the "Bicket" households were all in Union Co, in and around Monroe. Just a thought. I suspect that the James (#3) which the GA Archives as serving in the Georgia militia from 96 District SC is the same as James father of James McConnell Montgomery.
