Is there anyone on the lists that is a member of Tanners Baptist Church in Ellenwood Ga? I have been trying for months to get somone there to return a phone call regarding my query as to if they ever kept records on the burials in that cemetery or to find out if there is a church historian...short of driving down to be there on Sunday morning when they have service, I thought maybe there might be someone on the list that went there and could help. Hi Shannon, I have had luck calling a local funeral home and asking them to check their lists of who to contact for burials in a cemetery. They have a list of whom they have to call when they have a burial for a cemetery. They should be able to help you with a name and number. It will save a lot of time and waiting. I just wanted to update on this in case anyone was interested, and also to thank everyone for their suggestions, and to document this incase anyone else ever runs into this kind of situation. I contacted the Baptist Association that this church belongs to, and they were kind enough to give me the home phone number for the Pastor. I talked with him this morning and its been confirmed that there were no records kept as to the burials that ever took place in the cemetery. I visited the cemetery Saturday and there is indeed no way to tell which "rock" my ancestor is buried under. The Pastor has agreed that placing the confederate stone is important and has offered to let me pick a place in the cemetery to have it set (he will bring it up before the church board this week to get the "official" ok). I was very surprised at this, but I am definitely not going to argue about it!!! Once we get the stone from the VA and have it set I plan to hold a memorial service for William Redding Byers to honor his memory to the family, and hopefully I can find a civil war reenactor or two(I used to do this a long time ago, but alas I can find no group representing the SC Calvary unity Pvt. Byers was attached to, so Im hoping someone in Clayton County will be willing to help me out) to be present as well as a Pastor friend and of course our family members. It just goes to show that not giving up, as I was want to do, is not an option. While we may never ever know exactly where his grave is, we do know the acre of land he was laid to rest in and for that and the kindness of the church in letting me place the stone, I can be thankful.
