    3. Montgomery was an artificer under the command of George Gilmer in 1813 when ordered to Standing Peachtree on the Chattahoochee River to build Fort Peachtree. This was a federal project intended to build boats to float supplies down the river to troops at Fort Mitchell (Columbus) who were fighting the Creek Indians in Alabama. Although five boats were built, no supplies ever survived the river to reach Fort Mitchell, and the project was abandoned. Although Montgomery campaigned to have the fort remain open, he was unsuccessful. Montgomery moved his family from Jackson County to Standing Peachtree in 1819, while it was still Indian territory. The area was part of Fayette County in 1821, then became part of DeKalb when it was organized in 1822. Montgomery remained at Standing Peachtree until his death on 6 Oct 1842. As far as I know Andrew Jackson never came to DeKalb. Vivian Price Saffold At 09:28 PM 12/5/2006, Ayers, B. J. wrote: > > > >---------- >From: Ayers, B.
