J. Subject: Re: EARLY FAMILIES IN THE ***WAXHAWS*** Prior to and thru theREV. WAR. Dear Mr. Ayers; In response to your query, according to Moss's South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution James Montgomery served as a horseman in the militia at Blackstock's Plantation and Waxhaw, 1780, 1781, 1782 under Capt. Nesbitt and Capt. Hugh Coffey. In addition, he served under Capts. Gray, Hughs and Col. Winn. Documents certifying this service, A.A.5311; Stub indents O208, T158, V602, X98, are held by the south Carolina Department of Archives and History at 8301 Parklane Road, Columbia SC 29223. Further information regarding the Montgomery family of the Waxhaw region may be found in Louise Pettus's book The Waxhaws and in D. C. Montgomery, Jr.'s The Descendants of Hough Montgomery, SR. and some related families. You should be able to obtain both through interlibrary loan at your local public library. If there is any other way I may be of assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.
