A Martha Dikes/Dykes is buried in the Gieger Cemetery in Covington County, MS. Her inscription says she is the wife of Benjamin Dikes, however it is believed to be misspelled and should be Dykes. Her daughter is Eleanor Jane who married Zachariah Gieger. Some have claimed that Eleanor is Benjamin Dykes' stepdaughter but have offered no positive proof. I have no idea what Martha's maiden name was, nor do I have her birth year, but it should be somewhere between 1795-1805 because Eleanor Jane was born in 1824. Other researchers claim that the Dikes/Dykes came from SC, albeit the Gieger's migrated from Bulloch County GA before MS became a State. If you can link to this Eleanor Jane, her mother Martha (surname unproven) or her husband Benjamin Dykes, I would appreciate the info. Hope your Christmas was Merry, and may your New Year be the Best ever. Bleckley County GA has lots of Dykes and actually was named originally after the Dykes family being called Dykesboro Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness which frightens us. Your playing small doesn't serve the world there is nothing enlightening about shrinking so other people dont feel insecure around you. We were all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear. Our presence automatically liberates others." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Gerald Gieger Sent: Monday, December 25, 2006 12:20 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] Riley Dykes, GA 1800's A Martha Dikes/Dykes is buried in the Gieger Cemetery in Covington County, MS. Gerry, According to the 1850 census Martha was born in SC (as was Benjamin) ca. 1794. If you don't have this info already, I would be glad to send you the original census page. It would be most appreciated...I don't know her lineage, albeit some have speculated that she was a cousin of my ggg-grandfather, Jessie Gieger. How she came to buried in that family cemetery is uncertain except that Eleanor Jane was married to Zachariah...and Benjamin was buried elsewhere in MS...and I think that he may be buried next to another wife. >From: "Joseph Cercy" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] Riley Dykes, GA 1800's >Date: Mon, 25 Dec 2006 19:51:30 +0000 > >Gerry, > >According to the 1850 census Martha was born in SC (as was Benjamin) ca. >1794.
