No knowledge about Purcells here, but a question: But I'm looking for a possible marriage of my 3-great grandfather John McQuien to a woman named possibly Purcell or Presnell. I waffle between those two names because the name came down as a middle name in my mother's direct line of female descent that nobody quite knew how to spell (it's been spelled Presel and Prezel). There were a bunch of McQueens and Purcells living intermixed with each other in NC in the early censuses (around 1790-1810). I'm pretty sure that John McQuien was from NC, though I have no real evidence for that or much of anything else about him. He showed up in the 1840 census in Sumter County, GA, then so far as I can tell... disappeared. I believe that the Angus McQuien who served in the 11th Georgia Artillery Battalion (Sumter Flying Artillery) in the Confederate Army, was his son. His daughter Mary McQuien married John English Autry and was my 2-great grandmother. I have no idea why the fairly, but not absolutely, unique spelling, was employed for the McQueen name... and it seemed to drift in and out as a spelling in records. So far as I can tell yet, I think Angus survived the war and ended up in Arkansas many years later... but in between, he vanished. John English Autry and Mary McQuien vanished for awhile too. I have never found here they lived in 1860, but John English Autry did serve in a company of the 64th Georgia Infantry Regiment which was raised in Sumter Co., GA, and by 1870 the family was in Decatur (now Grady) County, GA.
