Subject: Fosters - Ferrymen Mr. Ayers, My 2nd great-grandfather, David B. Foster, was a ferryman in Chattahoochee Co., GA, in the 1860 census. About his ancestry, I know only that his mother's name was Prudence; that she was head of household in the 1850 DeKalb Co., GA census, with 3 sons living with her - Green Foster, about 17 years old; David B. Foster, about 15 years old; and Francis Marion Foster, about 9 years old. In 1853, David married Nancy Jane Morgan in DeKalb Co., and the entire Foster - Morgan group were in Chattahoochee and/or Stewart Cos. in 1860. I know nothing about the father in this Foster family....I SUSPECT that Prudence's maiden name might have been Green - mainly because the oldest son with her in 1850 was named "Green Foster" and because in the 1870 Chattahoochee Co., GA census, after all 3 of her sons had died in the War Between the States, she was living next door to a man named Henry Green, who was a couple of years older than she (her age was about 70).....I suspect this man was her brother, but have no proof. I have searched counties in east GA for a marriage license for any Foster man marrying a woman named Prudence in the 1830s, but have found none. I have no indication of the given name of Prudence's husband....David B. Foster (her son and my 2nd great-grandfather) fathered 2 sons - the eldest, John Foster, born about 1856 in Chattahoochee Co.; and Matthew Barringer Foster (my maternal grandmother's father), born about 1859 in Chattahoochee Co.; and a daughter named Frances, born about 1861. It is POSSIBLE that David B. named his eldest son after his father - John - I do not know. Nor do I know from whence came the names "Matthew," "Barringer" or "Frances." An archivist at the GA State Archives told me that those given names were very popular in coastal Virginia and that the Foster family COULD have originated there. Do any of these names sound familiar to you? I would love to know just where to look for my Fosters before 1850.....none of the DeKalb Co. nor Henry Co., GA, records give me any indication of the name of the husband/father in this Foster family, nor of where they came from. I have read many of your postings on rootsweb....I remember your messages, for my 2 youngest brothers served in the Marine Corps during the 1960s - one spent 2 tours of duty in Viet Nam in 1967-68. Sincerely, Janice Newton Thurmond, Marietta, GA
