    3. Hi Barbara, My great-grandmother's half-sister was institutionalized at the sanitarium from 1905 until her death in the mid-1930s. I contacted the hospital and they sent me the little info they had-- essentially 2 index cards with very basic information such as name, date entered, date of death, home county and a brief diagnosis. They told me that it was all the information there is about her (kind of sad considering it covered over 30 years of her life). However, after reading your message, should I consider the possibility that there might be additional information at the Georgia archives? Another question someone might know the answer to: when someone was committed, did it require any legal action in their home county, perhaps by their personal physician or a family member? I'm wondering if there may be more information in the county records of her home county? Thanks for any help. I have used these records and some of them are very interesting and have good family information. Others are sketchy. For records after 1924, a court order is required, and they have to be accessed at or through the hospital itself. Barbara Smallwood Stock, CGRS Marietta, GA

    3. Hi, Juliann, I'm sure Barbara will answer also, but yes, there will be a record in the superior court of the county of residence concerning the hearing to commit. The proceedings usually included a recommendation by a physician, but in earlier years the commitment was often done only on the testimony of a family member. When the sanitarium first opened, it seemed to be "the thing to do" for a long time. Even those records of the most impersonal hearings are heart-wrenching - at least for me. Good luck! 3. I can only speak about what I have found in Banks County's Probate Office. There are records there of folks.who was sent to Milledgeville with the Probate Judge's approval. I did not look very closely at the records but they indicated who was asking for the committal and gave some information. You might consider getting in touch with the Probate Court and see if they have those records from the time frame you need. 3. You might check the minute books in the Probate office at the county courthouse. They sometimes give brief details on commitments to the state hospital. I suspect that the hospital gave you all there was and that there will be no more than that at the state archives.
