KUnderwood, The Underwood in question was found to be James Underwood, son of Dolphus Underwood and Chili Covington, both of Bartow County Ga. in 1870. In the 1860 Census, James Underwood b. 1865 in Tn is in the household with Chili Covington, dau of Andrew Jackson Covington. Dolphus Underwood aka D. E. or Dolphus Ervin Underwood is also listed but only Chili as the head of household.. (Also found that a Ervin/Irwin Underwood married Chili Covington on March 9,1865 in Cherokee Co.) 1870 Bartow Co. Census Underwood, Chili age 25 Ga. -James age 4 Tn -Wiley, Edward age 11 Ga. farm laborer -Underwood, Dolphus age 25 Ga. farm laborer In the 1880 Census of Bartow Co. Ga. we find D. E. Underwood and children, but without wife, Martha. Underwood, D E age 36 born GA GA GA -no wife listed -James son 15 TN -Minnie dau 9 AR -Morgan son 6 AR -Louisa dau 4 AR -Zack son 1 AL This family went to Blount County Alabama in early 180s, D.E. or Dolphus Ervin married again in 1882 to Nancy Elizabeth Copeland. They had three children: Dalsia Victoria Underwood b. 1883 (m. Wm Cornelius) Albert Henry Underwood b.1886 (m. Emmer McCuller)(my line) Ervin Earcy Underwood b. Feb 11,1888 (m. Mary Elizabeth Allen). Their father, D.E. died in Nov 5, 1887 in the fall before Ervin Ercy was born. James being the oldest child has been difficult to track, and is believed to be the one who went to Texas in the early 1900s. Morgan, the other 'older' brother, is believed to have been in Memphis and was a policeman or some kind of peace officer, and also elusive to track.
