I know of at least one cemetery in Georgia that is now under water. The Harper Cemetery on Pistol Creek in Lincoln County, Georgia. The graves of my Harper ancestors are there, much to my sorrow. See below: >From "Wilkes County Cemeteries," by F. M. and Nell H. Newsome, page 182: These cemeteries are now under water. If they had markers with names and dates they have been destroyed. The names, dates and locations here are from family records, old Bibles, courthouse records, newspaper clippings, etc. Harper Cemetery On Pistol Creek In Lincoln County, GA Dorothy O'Neill -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 7:39 AM Subject: [GEORGIA] Missing Graves This past week-end, I attend a Genealogy Workshop sponsored by my DAR chapter. The speaker mentioned something I had never thought of before. She said there were areas that were flooded and made into lakes by TVA. These areas contained many cemeteries and people were contacted to ask what they wanted done with their loved one's remains. They were given the choice to move the remains or just leave them and let them be underwater. She said records were kept of the people contacted and choices made. Now, I did not hear where she said the records were, but I believe they would be with the TVA or the state. Has anyone else heard of this and do you know where these records might be?
