    3. Hello, From what I have read, once a student was proficient in Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, History etc....they could take a test and receive a Teaching Certificate. They then applied to whatever school district that needed teachers. If they were accepted (and were,even at very young ages - 16, 17 etc.......). They then boarded with different families in the area and got paid whatever the salary was. I think that applied to most areas in the 1800's (especially the early part of the century) and moreso in the remote areas.
