People of Germanic descent usually were known by their second name, the Rufnom(called name), whereas their first name, the Fornom, was from a favorite Saint, which is why you might see the same first name given to several sublingsm i.e.m Mary Anna, Mary Lucinda, Hans George, Hans Henry, (or Johannes) in some cases...Some peop;e have three given names, two of my children and two grandchildren; my grandmother had 32 given names. >From: "brenda" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: "Georgia Roots" <[email protected]> >Subject: [GEORGIA] strange names, two middle names >Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 22:14:31 -0500 > >In my research I keep coming across three initials for the first and middle >name, such as: >H.A.M. I looked for 50 years for my gg-grandfather who is listed as "Sam" or "Samuel" which turns out to be his Rufnom or called name...All the records were James S. or J.S. My Grandmother's mother promised to name the baby after all her friends...so not to make anyone mad, she gave her all of them...she died 3 monts later, leaving the Baby to deal with all those names...none of which were 'family' names >From: "Betty lovell" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] strange names, two middle names >Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2006 20:32:50 -0700 > >wow your grandmother beat mine who had 4 >Thanks >Betty >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Gerald Gieger" <[email protected]> >To: <[email protected]> >Sent: Sunday, October 01, 2006 5:56 PM >Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] strange names, two middle names > > > > People of Germanic descent usually were known by their second name, the > > Rufnom(called name), whereas their first name, the Fornom, was from a > > favorite Saint, which is why you might see the same first name given to > > several sublingsm i.e.m Mary Anna, Mary Lucinda, Hans George, Hans >Henry, > > (or Johannes) in some cases...Some peop;e have three given names, two of >my > > children and two grandchildren; my grandmother had 32 given names. > > > > > > >From: "brenda" <[email protected]> > > >Reply-To: [email protected] > > >To: "Georgia Roots" <[email protected]> > > >Subject: [GEORGIA] strange names, two middle names > > >Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 22:14:31 -0500 > > > > > >In my research I keep coming across three initials for the first and >middle > > >name, such as: > > >H.A.M.
