Jacob Hinton married Sarah Sally Stallings 1 Jan 1792 JoCo., NC, bm: Zadok Stallings, and had a whole bunch of children, which I have all of them named by name. Let me know if you want their names. Also I have copy of Jacob Hintons LWT. Hardy Hinton also was a son of Malachi Hinton Sr & Sarah (Wimberly), and married 27 April 1798 Wake Co., NC to Clara Alford. Hardy Hinton was born 1780 JoCo., NC, d. 1840 Stockbridge, Henry Co., GA. Clara (Alford) Hinton was born __, d. 1830 Stockbridge, Henry Co., GA and had two KNOWN children: (1) William Gaston Hinton, b. 7 Sept 1813 Wake Co., NC, d. 6 Dec 1893 Henry Co., GA, md 15 May 1839 Henry Co., GA to Elizabeth Ann (Merritt). (2) Delaney Hinton (no other info on her). According to A Special Publication of The National Genealogical Society, Gone To Georgia, p. 136, the Hintons in Georgia for 1820. Wood Hinton (200010-20010-0). Wood Hinton was living in Mecklenburg Co., VA in 1782, and died there ca 1794. Some of the family appear to have moved to Georgia during the 1790s. John Hinton bought 3 April 1799 of Nathaniel Bradford, land in Jackson Co. In 1820, Wood Hinton was enumerated in Jackson and the 1850 census showed (#708, 700) Wood Hinton, b. in Virginia 1790, and William Hinton, born in Virginia 1790, and William Hinton, b. in Georgia 1800. Others enumerated in 1820 were Jacob and James Hinton of Clarke County; Lewis of Walton Co; Peter a Revolutionary soldier and Thomas of Elbert Co; Christopher, Henry and Thomas of Warren Co; and James, John and Noah of Wilkes Co. Hinton from North cCaroline were living in the Ceded Lands (Wilkes Co) in 1773. The family intermarried with the Lanes who moved to Wilkes Co from Wake County, NC and are found seated in various counties of Southside Virginia as well as the northern tier of NC Counties from the 1750s. Hope this will help. Lorene -------------- Original message from "Ayers, B. The above child Isaac Hinton married Lucy Matilda (Hinton) and they had a daughter Lydia Hinton to marry Col. I just wanted to update on this in case anyone was interested, and also to thank everyone for their suggestions, and to document this incase anyone else ever runs into this kind of situation. I contacted the Baptist Association that this church belongs to, and they were kind enough to give me the home phone number for the Pastor. I talked with him this morning and its been confirmed that there were no records kept as to the burials that ever took place in the cemetery. I visited the cemetery Saturday and there is indeed no way to tell which "rock" my ancestor is buried under. The Pastor has agreed that placing the confederate stone is important and has offered to let me pick a place in the cemetery to have it set (he will bring it up before the church board this week to get the "official" ok). I was very surprised at this, but I am definitely not going to argue about it!!! Once we get the stone from the VA and have it set I plan to hold a memorial service for William Redding Byers to honor his memory to the family, and hopefully I can find a civil war reenactor or two(I used to do this a long time ago, but alas I can find no group representing the SC Calvary unity Pvt. Byers was attached to, so Im hoping someone in Clayton County will be willing to help me out) to be present as well as a Pastor friend and of course our family members. It just goes to show that not giving up, as I was want to do, is not an option. While we may never ever know exactly where his grave is, we do know the acre of land he was laid to rest in and for that and the kindness of the church in letting me place the stone, I can be thankful. How does this Act work for granting land for the purpose of grist, saw and iron mills? This appears in a bond made by my ancestor in 1777 in Wilkes Co., GA. -- Whereas by an Act of Assembly of the State of Georgia aforesaid - "It is enacted that if any person or persons shall build or cause to be built a grist mill on any vacant land he or they shall have one hundred acres of land reserved until the said mill be built and fit for use, and then shall have and be entitled to receive a Grant for the same and every person or persons building or causing to be built a saw mill on vacant land shall have five hundred acres of land reserved until the said mill be built and fit for use, and then shall have and be entitled to and receive a Grant for the same as an encouragement for building such saw mill he she or they paying the usual fees for surveying and granting the said lands. And also that any person willing to build a Furnace or Blomary for working iron and that will give security for completing the same and shall actually continue making the iron for the term of five years (afterwards) shall be entitled to a reserve of two thousand acres of land in one tract and at the expiration of said term to have a grant for the same, and also that every person or persons who shall build a forge for making Bar Iron and will give security for completing the said Work and shall actually continue the business of making Bar Iron for the term of five years shall be entitled to a reserve of two thousand acres of land in one tract and at the expiration of the said term to have a grant for the same." It also says - "in the sum of five hundred pounds lawful money of the said State to be paid to the said John Adam Treutlin, Esq., or to his successors, Governors and Commanders in Chief for the time being, to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each of us by himself our and each of our heirs, Executors and Administrators and every of them for and in the whole firmly by these presents Sealed with our seals". Does this mean someone had to pay 500 pounds and then build a mill in order to be receive the land? Please explain how this worked. Thanks, Phyllis **************Ideas to please picky eaters. I am trying to figure out a location on the map for the 1920 census in Ellenwood. The family I am tracing was in district 67 which according to the census description was Militia District 1406, Ellenwood including Rex town; it shows the family lived on Covington Road and the two roads on the pages on either side of my family are Decatur Road and Panola Road. Now I know where Panola is....I cannont find Covington or Decatur Road in Ellenwood....I know where Covington Hwy is and its way to far north (and in another county) I dont know if Decatur Rd refers to Hwy 29 or Hwy 78 but in either case, neither are in Clayton now, that I can find. I'm *guessing* that since Rex was included it was somewhere near where Rex Rd and Panola road are....and my mind is thinking...could it be what is Ellenwood road now. Anyone either know where I can find a county map from 1920, my googling hasnt brought up one, or have first hand knowledge of what the area of Covington Rd and Decatur Rd and Panola Rd is now? Is there anyone on the lists that is a member of Tanners Baptist Church in Ellenwood Ga? I have been trying for months to get somone there to return a phone call regarding my query as to if they ever kept records on the burials in that cemetery or to find out if there is a church historian...short of driving down to be there on Sunday morning when they have service, I thought maybe there might be someone on the list that went there and could help. Hi Shannon, I have had luck calling a local funeral home and asking them to check their lists of who to contact for burials in a cemetery. They have a list of whom they have to call when they have a burial for a cemetery. They should be able to help you with a name and number. It will save a lot of time and waiting. THANKS & GOD BLESS SEMPER FI BA- In N.GA!! -----Original Message----- From: georgia-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:georgia-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JodieK444@aol.com Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2008 1:21 PM To: georgia@rootsweb.com Subject: [GEORGIA] Mary Ann Owen & William T. Cole - Georgia Thanks so much to those who have responded both to the list and privately to my questions about this couple. It appears that William and Mary Ann Owen Cole moved from Meriwether County slightly northward to Newnan in Coweta County where William was listed first as a painter (1860) and then as a dentist (1870). Mary Ann was with him in 1860 but by 1870 William's wife was Lena, maiden name unknown (no marriage record in Coweta). William's children in 1860 were James, Caroline, William L., Charles D. and Jesse. By 1870, he has a new wife. Additional children are Joseph B. 10, Thomas, 4, and Maud, 2. Since I don't know when Mary Ann died, it's hard to tell which children may be hers. Perhaps all of them. Regarding Carole's message on the Meriwether Cole family, I had noticed the will of Nancy Ward Cole online (in Meriwether) and saw that she had a son named William T., but he was too young to be my William. However, one of her children (Sallie) married a Dodds and there are Dodds in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery in Rocky Mount where Mary Ann Owen Cole's parents and brother are buried. My William T. Cole is living next door to Robert D. Cole in 1860, in downtown Newnan, and later goes into business with him. Here's an excerpt from Memoirs of Georgia: "On Dec. 27, 1849, Robert D. Cole settled on the lot where he now lives and continues to work at his trade. "In 1854 he founded the firm of Cole & Barnes, with Thomas Barnes as partner, and began business on a very small scale. In the same year they purchased a small engine, and about this time their friends came to them and advised them to give up the business or they would lose all they had. "Mr. Barnes remained with the company only two years, but Mr. Cole continued as sole proprietor until 1858, when Dr. W. T. Cole and his brother, Matthew Cole, became partners, the firm being then R. D. Cole & Co., which it remained until 1866, when W. T. Cole withdrew and it became R. D. Cole & Bro." (End excerpt) This little business went on to become the famous R.D. Cole Manufacturing which built great things all over Coweta County. The wording indicates that W.T. Cole was not R.D. Cole's brother, but they were contemporaries and the name of William's son, Jesse, fits into the naming pattern of this family. Does anyone have information showing that he was a brother to R.D. Cole? R.D. Cole was born in Newton County to Robert Cole & Elizabeth Fambrough. They came to Georgia from Surrey County, North Carolina. (From "Memoirs." W.U. Anderson's history of Coweta gives a pertinent comment on William : >From Coweta County Chronicles, p. 401 (year was 1911) "Dr. W.T. Cole died May 4, aged eighty-three - a man of versatile talents, a fine draughtsman but especially famed in his profession as a dental surgeon." My William's birth year is estimated at 1827, so this is probably him. Records of Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan provided by a sexton (not shown in regular listings) show a Dr. W.T. Cole, 5 May, 1911, age 85. The same records show Mrs. W.T. Cole, 24 March 1919, 83 years. (Coweta County cemeteries book, p. 413). Conflicting information that fits with my second wife is found in the same reference on page 124, Holly Springs cemetery 5 miles north of Moreland: Sarah E. Pittard Cole, 4 March 1849 - 17 Sep 1892, married W.T. Cole 4 March 1867 (again, not in Coweta Marriage records). Maybe William married a third time. On page 437 of the cemeteries book, there is a diagram of the Presbyterian Church Cemetery part of Oak Hill which shows a plot owned by Dr. W.T. Cole right next to Mrs. Albert T. Smith. Will continue to put the pieces together. If anyone has more, please speak up. Ancestry's census indexers have gotten atrocious. This family was found when someone used Heritage Quest. I searched all day yesterday for them with Ancestry and came up empty. After I found where they were, I went back to Ancestry today and changed the erroneous transcription. At least they let you do that. Hope this will make it easier for the next person. Again, many, many thanks for all the help. Judy K in Newnan
