-------Some excellent material for Ga researchers: Family Puzzlers Journals - by Mary Bondurant Warren, 1964-1997. One can still purchase hard-bound copies of the journals by year for about $30.00. They are indexed and available online at Heritage Papers. Each issue has wonderful insights and information about early colonists and settling of lands. It has many family Bible records as well. The online index lists the surnames of the Bible records. I believe that Mary's daughter is publishing a genealogical magazine. Historical Collections of Georgia with Index: by The Rev. George White, M.A. NY: Pudney and Russell, Publishers, 1954. This is most likely available at the LDS Library unless you live in GA. I bought my cc at an antique store in Houston. This book contains the early tax lists (1750, etc.) and it has a review of each county, date of origin, etc., along with many names. Wayfarers of Walton, by Anita B. Sams. 1967. Foote and Davies, Doraville, GA reprinted 2000: Walton Graphic Media, Monroe, GA.; I would guess that it is available at most LDS libraries or one could write to the Walton Graphic Media in Monroe, Ga. I don't have their address.
Practically every Mary that's in my 6000+ names family tree was called Polly. Go figure. ;-) Carol
Polly is also a nickname for Violet...don't know how it connects... >From: "SANDRA BANE" <SBANE@neo.rr.com> >Reply-To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com >To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [GEORGIA] Nicknames >Date: Sat, 16 Aug 2003 22:39:24 -0400 > >Does anyone know if the name Mary >has the nickname of "Polly" ??? >I think I remember seeing it but I am not sure. >Nickname "Polly" = ????? > >Sandra >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Kathleen Burnett" <kathleenburnett@earthlink.net> >To: <GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2003 2:46 PM >Subject: [GEORGIA] From List Mom, Interesting website"Courthouse >Experiences" > > > > Dear List Members, > > > > I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" > > http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but > > the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of > > those working in the courthouses. > > > > I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse > > experience you add them to this site. > > > > I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit > > later this year. > > > > Kathleen Burnett > > List Mom > > > > > > > > ==== GEORGIA Mailing List ==== > > If you wish to unsubscribe from the Georgia list, send only the word > > UNSUBSCRIBE to GEORGIA-l-request@rootsweb.com or if you are on the >Digest > > List to GEORGIA-d-request@rootsweb.com > > > > ============================== > > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy >records, >go to: > > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > > > > > >==== GEORGIA Mailing List ==== >NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political >announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, >etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for >removal. >Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett >kathleenburnett@earthlink.net > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, >go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Mary to Molly to Polly. This originates in Ireland where Mary is spelt Maire and Molly is spelt Maille - Maire to Maille to Paille is a lot clearer visually but the sounds are the same - Mary to Molly to Polly. Harold
And my great-grandmother's name was Mary, nickname Mollie. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carlette" <carlette@mail.com> To: <GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2003 9:39 PM Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] Nicknames > I'd say yes. Dear List Members, I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of those working in the courthouses. I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year. Wonder if that Carlton family is where Carlton, Georgia got its name? The railroad calls the town Berkley. Carlton is the first town west of the Broard River. George in Leeds, AL

I have looked and looked for a book that would provide a good social history of Georgia during the 1800's---particularly 1830-1880 , but to no avail. I wanted to use it to help me with writing my family history and to gain better understanding. Does anyone know of such a book that they can recommend? thanks Michelle
Dear List Members, I now have the photo to help you date clothing. If you want a copy, send your request to me personally KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net with "PHOTO REQUEST" in the subject line. I will not send it if the request comes across the list and I will not send it if the subject line does not read "PHOTO REQUEST" My usual amount of e-mail received each day is over 500 so if your request is buried in one of the normal posting, I will not see it.
