    3. Balaam #1: Notes: Balaam BROOKS b. 1836, to Joel Brooks and Cynthia Fallen has been listed also as Baleum BROOKS. Either of these names - phonetically - could be Bailey M. BROOKS. Balaam BROOKS served in Company "G", First Alabama Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army. Balaam #2 Notes: Balaam Brooks b. ca. 1782 - listed as son of John and Jane May Brooks may well be a grandson of theirs. I wonder if it is possible that he is the 9th child of Joab Brooks and Catherine Campbell. -------Original Message------- From: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 09:40:11 To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] Joab Brooks 1712-1775, NC>GA I am researching the Balaam Brooks who was b c1782- aft 1865 Randolph Co GA, and married in Warren county 11 Aug 1802 to Mary McGlammery (c1788-aft 1865 Randolph Co GA.) Many researchers, including Mrs Kellam have suggested him to be a son of the above named John & Jane May Brooks; however, I think he might more likely be a grandson.

    3. Following is an outline of the supposed descendants of James Brooks b. GA abt. 1770-1780 and Falby Cobb or Storey. All of the 'supposed' children of this couple except for David Brooks and Jacob R. Brooks were born in Warren County, GA. Note: the mingling of Pratts, SToreys, and Cobbs which are used as middle names in the third generation. Balaam is found as a middle name, too. Sources: Shirley Holmquist, W.F. 3. The Jane Brooks Pratt problem has been resolved thanks to your quick eye. She is a daughter of Joab b. 1753. Evidently, I was merge happy and she ended up with Joab b. 1712. I will look more at the Balaam Brooks line to see if I have more information I do have Wayfarers of Walton, Wilkes Records, and Family Puzzlers by Bondurant; slowly I am working my way through the Brooks in the material. cf -------Original Message------- From: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 09:40:11 To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] Joab Brooks 1712-1775, NC>GA I'm curious as to why you placed Jane Brooks Pratt in that particular Joab Brooks household. I don't see that Joab Brooks 1712-1775 ever came to GA. Ida Brooks Kellam in her 1950 book, "Brooks and Kindred Families," places Jane Brooks who married Vincent Pratt in the Warren County GA Joab Brooks family. This Joab Brooks according to her was born 1753 and d 1804 in Warren county Georgia (will) & married Catherine Campbell. He was the son of John & Jane May Brooks, brother to the Joab Brooks in your Generation 1. Joab & Catherine also according to Mrs Kellam had a daughter Elizabeth Brooks who also married into the Pratt family, marrying Leonard Pratt. I am researching the Balaam Brooks who was b c1782- aft 1865 Randolph Co GA, and married in Warren county 11 Aug 1802 to Mary McGlammery (c1788-aft 1865 Randolph Co GA.) Many researchers, including Mrs Kellam have suggested him to be a son of the above named John & Jane May Brooks; however, I think he might more likely be a grandson. I'm sure the book "Brooks and Kindred Families" contains many errors, as most family histories do, but it is very well written and worth studying (no longer in print, copy at GA archives.) 3. Thanks for the message and good information. I do appreciate hearing about possible errors! I am familiar with the Brooks book; the material I am using came from several researchers as well as the Brooks book. There are many errors in most of it. You may well be on target about the misplacement of Jane into Joab b. 1712 family. Joab b. 1712 did not go to GA. But, I did place the GA descendants on the list because I am trying to sort through the errors. One big error is the missing generation of Joab b. 1712 or the mis-assignment of children to him. I am searching for someone to fill in the blanks. I will do further checking on this and be back. The Warren County, Walton County Brooks contain the ancestry of Jacob R. Brooks b. 1806; the descendants of the Warren/Walton/Morgan/Jackson Brooks are braided with Pratts, Gilmores and Stories. So are the ones that migrated to Pike County, GA along with my ancestor. And I am looking for clues! Kind regards, Cf -------Original Message------- From: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 09:40:11 To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] Joab Brooks 1712-1775, NC>GA I'm curious as to why you placed Jane Brooks Pratt in that particular Joab Brooks household. This Jacob Brooks is of no relation to me or the Brooks in my database; however, I found the article interesting enough to mark it in the book in which it was found, and I though that it might be of interest to you in your research of Jacob Brooks. Supposedly, this information was extracted from the February 7, 1829, issues of "The Southern Recorder," and is contained in a book titled: "Genealogical Material from Legal Notices in Early Georgia Newspapers" abstracted by the late Judge Folks Huxford, F.A.S.G. and published by the Southern Historical Press, Inc., Easley, SC, ISBN 0-89308-656-8. This article pertains to some controversy that existed in 1828-29 over the proper location of the old boundary line between the Creeks and Cherokee Indians since it became the boundary of the lands ceded by the Creek Indians in 1825. The Cherokee Indians disputed the line. A lengthy report is made in the Recorder in the issue above referred to, anent the findings of the Governor's commissioner in the matter. Since the testimony of several witnesses was taken wherein some information is given of, more or less genealogical value, a brief abstract is included. What follows is the abstract for Jacob Brooks. "Jacob R. Brooks of DeKalb county testified he has resided on the Chattahoochee River since 1819 and had a transient residence there for a few years previously to 1819. He had talked with natives and citizens of the Cherokee Nation about their boundry [sic] line and until 1821 had understood the line ran from Suwannee Old Town to the Chattahoochee and thence on a creek called Alah-Kulsee (the dividing line) . . . from there to Wills Creek." The Southern Recorder was published in Milledgeville, Georgia. It is my understanding that The University of Georgia in Athens has compiled a list of references to where microfilm copies of this newspaper might be viewed, should you so desire to review the complete article. 3. I am looking at "Granny's Nickname; a Collection of Female Names, Nicknames and Various Spellings" compiled by Helen Smothers Swenson, printed by Ericson Books, Nagadoches TX. in 1981. On page 14 Mary and Mary Ann appear to use Moll, Mollie, Molly as possible nicknames. Ms. Swenson indicates on page 17 that Polly can be a nickname for Mary or Paula. I have read somewhere that Polly is a nicknames for Mary Jane.
