    3. Old Pinetucky was outside Augusta. It was acquired by the government to make Fort Gordon military installation. They "bought" the land from the folks, and even hired many of them during the depression as they were building Camp Gordon. There is a story about it in the book, but it is too long to put in here, and too sad. Fort Gordon in Georgia now sits where Old Pinetucky was originally. The government paid about $20.00 an acre, which in 1941 was a lot of money. They had to hurry up and build the camp to train soldiers to fight in WWII. Many people signed over their property without a second guess because they knew the country was in trouble and of course the money too. There were some wealthy people, i.e. Boardmans, who had some valuable property which they got more money. Most of the people had owned the land since before the CW. One lady said as they were leaving, the construction people were tearing down her home right behind them. Camp Gordon had 3 service clubs, a sports arena, 12 chapels a service station, waterworks, sewage disposal plant, bakery, and laundry. a 730 bed hospital was soon to come. All of this in October 1941, and it officiall opened 12/9/1941. Old Pinetucky is now only a memory on paper, since most all those who lived there are now gone. Fort Gordon had a 50 year reunion in 1989 and the oldest person there who had resided in Old Pinetucky, was 91 years old. It is a very sad story to read, yet a very brave one because these folks were as patriotic as they were poor, so it helped both. 3. Is this list filtered for viruses?? It seems that everyday for the past week I've had one or two viruses to try and come through. Am so glad that we have a good virus protector in place, but it gets very annoying to have to spend time to remove the virus. Was just wondering what protection that the list has since you get so many inquiries? Thanks! Maureen

    3. The Griffin Daily News is on microfilm through 1999. The library in Griffin may have these later years - I know they have earlier years. The microfilms may also be viewed in the basement of the Main Library at the University of Georgia. 3. A lot of times the newspaper in Jackson, Butts County (next to Spalding) will run the obituaries for Griffin. I do not know if they will do look ups or if they are online or not. My brother lived in Griffin and died this past February. His was in both papers. The name of it is JACKSON PROGRESS-ARGUS. 3. Beth: Since you are not sure of the county where the marriage occurred, I would recommend the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Georgia. There you could access the marriage records for several counties in a relatively short period of time. You might want to get the 1870 census record for the bride's family and 1880 census record for the married couple first to help pinpoint where they might be living in 1878. Barbara Smallwood Stock, CGRS -----Original Message----- From: Beth Waits [mailto:bhammom@bham.rr.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2003 8:47 PM To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GEORGIA] Location of records in Paulding and Polk Co. - HAYNES, BELL Where would I find the marriage records of a couple who married in Paulding County, GA in 1878? The couple are James M. HAYNES and Amanda BELL. They were probably married in Paulding, but Carroll, Bartow (Cass), and Polk counties are also possibilities. I would also like to find records and the burial place of Arminda BELL, mother of Amanda BELL HAYNES, who probably died in Polk County in 1904. Her husband, David T. BELL was killed in the Battle of Atlanta and she received a widow's pension. For several years she received it in Paulding County, but in 1903 and 1904 she received it in Polk. The records end at that point, so I assume she died in 1904. She also had a son named G.W. BELL, who may have lived in the Atlanta area. I am going to be in north GA next week and would like to look for the marriage certificate of James M. and Amanda and the final resting place of Arminda if someone could please give me some direction! Please forgive multiple posting.
