    1. [GEORGIA] Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church, Box Springs, Ga.
    2. I am trying to location of where the Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church used to be and the Cemetery accross the street from it.. My gr gr grandpapa Rev. Green Berry Waldrop help constituted the Church in 1837. This is the information I found in the Talbot County's Library. Constituted in 1837, the Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church was located originally about three miles from Box Springs on what is not Carl Jones Road, locally called The Hut Road" for a place operated by Miss Lucile Herring during the 1940s. The Hut was a gathering place for young people, and her hot dogs, and hamburgers live in memory. ANOTHER PAGE. The Liberty Hill Baptist Church was the first built abot 3 1/2 miles from Box Springs on what is now known as theHur Road, across from Liberty Hill Cemetery. It was organizeed on April 15, 1851. The members in 1872 including such famailies names as Davie, Youngblood, Williams, Gorman, Davis, Emanuel, Johnson , Weaver,Persons, Helms, Alderman, Hollism Johnson, Harbuck, Harris and Williams. Rev. J. T. Adams was a member in 1903. Other familyu names include Green, Pope, McClung, Browning, Stribling, Funderburk, Edge, Jenkins, Story, Lawhorn, Kemp and many others. At the conferrence in 1900 it was agreed to move the church to Box Springs .Funderburk, Adams and Gorhaam were appointed to plan and build the church. It was completed in November 1904 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, End We drove down to the Old Macon Road and drove past the Fire Department and the road dead in to Hut Road we turn to the right with the east on our right. We found a small Cemetery, but the graves were not old enough to match the dates of the Church. I am looking for the older Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church of the 1837 and it's location. Thanks for any help. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Columbus, Georgia

    1. [GEORGIA] Thomas E. Blanchard
    2. I am looking for any information on Thomas E. Blanchard Born 1840,died 1917, on a plantation in near Ellerslie, Georgia. His first Job was in J. W. Pease's Book Store. Mercer Blanchard is lised in his family. Mercer Blanchard Firsrt Lieutenant,CSA Co B, 37rh Georgia Reg. Mr. Thomas E. Blanchard was married to Sarah E. MacDougald. They had no children, they had an adpoted niece that died. Also in his family Dr. Joel Uriah McDuffie Blanchard, thr beloved " Dr. Mac." Blanchard., surgeon in the Congederae Army and physician to many in Columbus. I am not related to the Blanchards. I found a picture of Thomas E. Blanchard, he is the image of my son. In the Etta W, Blanchard Book there is a picture of Thomas E. Blanchard. It looks like my son posed for the picture.. The picture of Mr. Blanchard doesn't favor my son , he looks like my son. Hair , eyes, nose, mouth and face right on down to the little beard around his mouth. Mr. Blanchard has the same expression in his eyes as my son. Hie eyebrows and even the way my son wore his hair years ago. I would like to know if anyone has any other pictures of Thomas E. Blanchard so I could see if it's just this picture that looks like he and my son both sat for this picture. The pictures I have of my son is laughing or at least a smile. The picture of Mr. Blanchard is serious. Not only in the picture but in real life my son looks like this picture of Mr. Blanchard. It's an odd felling to look at a picture of a man born in 1840 and see your son. Thanks for any help. Sandra

    3. If you are looking towards Baptists and/or Methodists, I believe it likely that there will be records maintained in archival holdings at some of the denominational colleges... but that such holdings are pretty hit or miss. I've looked at archival holdings catalogued on the web but have never actually accessed any of the records. Here is a source for Baptist records: http://tarver.mercer.edu/special_collections/GBHD.htm For Methodists, you may have to do some searching or maybe someone else knows... RW

    3. Finding parish records depends on the denomination. I have found that the Baptists and liturgical denominations generally maintain good parish records - the parish book has to be maintained and brought up to date before the priest or pastor can move to another congregation. One can check the website of the denomination and be directed to archives. For instance, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is archiving all congregational parish records for online access. The parish records for the ELCA consist of the records of Lutheran denominations that have merged into the ELCA such as the ALC, LCA, etc. Lutheran church parish records are available back centuries (to 1500 AD) in Northern European countries like Scandinavia, etc. The Digitalarkivet from the U of Bergen has the parish records online. Bombing in Germany destroyed many parish registers. The Methodist Church Archives in Nashville, TN has been exceptionally kind and helpful in tracking down parish records locations. They do maintain records of clergy and will search those files when asked to do so. I have found that the colleges that archive the parish records have not filed, categorized and maintained the early records very good in many locations. In the US, The Roman Catholic Church has exceptional records in the places I have inquired. It was a challenge for me to find someone who wouldl assist in providing the information I needed to get access to the data. But when they did assist, it was fruitful. The Anglican denomination has some good early records - but so much depended on the priest's carefulness or carelessness. I believe that today keeping the parish register is mandatory. I haven't tried to track down Presybyterian Church records -

I don't know the name of his church either. What was *your* family's denomination? Before World War II (and even later), most Southern extended families belonged to the same denomination, especially if they were all from the same general area. I have two exceptions in my own extended family: my paternal grandparents, one of whom was from South Carolina and the other of whom was from the mountains of western North Carolina, belonged to different denominations. (He was a Methodist and she was a Baptist: after they married, due to a specific incident in South Carolina, she became a Methodist.) The other incident involved my mother's maternal grandmother: when my mother's maternal grandmother's family moved from West Virginia to eastern North Carolina shortly after 1900, they couldn't find a Lutheran church, so all became Methodists. >Is there a directory where I can find a list of clergy (live or dead) in a >given county and/or state? I don't know of any such thing for any time period. The best you could do would be to check microfilm of the local newspaper for that time period, and look for any mentions of these people. 3. Thanks Richard I was at Tarver this month and they have a great collection. I was at the one in Macon and copied several churches to get online. I placed Putnam County Georgia Crooked Creek Primitive Baptist Church online at http://www.gloverfamily.com/Crooked/crookedputnam.htm I scanned them up for all to read and am trying to get them transcribed as time allows. 1. [GEORGIA] Columbia Co. Districts & Land Lots?
    2. Leo Leonard
    3. GA Researchers: During a recent trip to the Georgia Dept. of Archives and History, I found a description of the boundaries of the Militia Districts of Columbia Co. in 1931(_Georgia's_Official_Register_compiled by Ruth Blair in 1931, pp. 580-581). Since Columbia Co. is a headright county, I was surprised to find references to districts and land lots in this description. With the assistance of an archivist, I was able to determine that the districts referred to seemed to be the same as the school districts on a 1915 map of Columbia Co. which is also held by the GA Archives. However, I still don't understand the references to numbered land lots. I have included below the description of the boundaries of GMD 129 (Appling) as an example. I hope that someone will be able to explain how I can identify the land lot referred to. ********************************** 129 APPLING Bounded on north by Green Brier creek and land lot 16; east by land lot 16 and Little Kiokee creek and Louisville public road; south by Old Wrightsboro public road and McDuffie county line and Green Brier creek. *********************************** Thanks for any assistance, Leo Leonard
