I believe the X stands for unknown. Did you check the front of the book for an explanation of terms, abbreviations, etc.? Most times I see an X as a guy's middle initial, I figure that it's probably Xavier. I have a hard time thinking that an X from someone making their mark would get into a directory... but anything is possible, always. Personally, I would suspect something more on the order of Xenia. <G> RW Gerald Gieger wrote: > Frequently, folks could not write their name, and transcribers did not > realize that the "X" was their mark, unless the scrivner wrote "His > (or Her) Mark" (as the case may be) above and below the "X" > >> From: Ethylsbrat@aol.com >> Reply-To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com >> To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com >> Subject: [GEORGIA] Initial >> Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2003 07:49:02 EDT >> >> I found my grandmothers name in an Atlanta City directory and her middle >> initial was listed as "X." >> Does anyone know weather this is for a middle name or because she had no >> middle name? >> And if it is a middle name what woman's names begin with "X"? >> Thanks, >> Darlene >
Hi all, this is the full transcription of what I found. Atlanta City Directory 1937 Sams Cicero E (Viola X) h 1771 Lakewood av SE Viola X Mrs florist 1171 Lakewood av SE h do Her full name is Viola "X" Plunkett Mobley Sams....and I never knew her to have a middle name. Her father is Levi William Plunkett and her mother is Mindora Cumi Spradlin....and I can find no "X" names in either family. I have not found Levi's mother so it could be in that family. I do appreciate all the help you are giving me. Darlene

Xavier Chapter (DAR) was named in honor of John Sevier, who was a member of the ancient and honorable Navarrese family of Xavier (anglicized Sevier). He was the first child of Valentine Sevier II and Joanna Goade and was born September 23, 1745 in Augusta County, Virginia. He died September 24, 1815 on the east bank of the Tallapoosa River, near Fort Decatur, Alabama. He was buried there, but later his body was removed to the Court House Square in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was married twice - first in 1761 to Sarah Hawkins and second, August 14, 1780 to Catherine (Bonnie Kate) Sherrill.
Good point, Dot, and two more good "X" names. My whole point was that if this was in a directory, the "X" would more than likely stand for a name, middle or maiden, whichever the case might be, rather than an "unknown" or a lack of literacy. But, herein lies another problem. Trying to find her in the census with an "X" name would probably be impossible since the census taker would probably spell it as he heard it, thus: "Zaviera," "Zenia," or "Zena." My gosh, don't we just love this stuff?? Judy
There might be others like Xenia or Xena but I wondering if there is a possibility the X could be the initial for her maiden name. I would think there would be only a few of those, also. Is there anything in the introductory information to the Directory that might help to explain how the information for the directory was gathered and processed? Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought this name was found in a city directory, not a will. Maybe her middle name was "Xaviera." That's about the only one I can think of. Just my two cents worth. Judy
That explanation on the 'X' made more sense than mine - guess I was thinking now as they put NMN or NMI with those that have no middle name/initial - so thats probably correct. delilah At 09:36 8/27/03 EDT, you wrote: >Delilah, > >I have wills of my ancestors and when there is an X there it means someone >signed for them > >The X is their mark and someone else wriote their name. > >This is on the wills I have , I don't know how it's used other places. > >Sandra > > >==== GEORGIA Mailing List ==== >NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political >announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, >etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. >Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett kathleenburnett@earthlink.net > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

Delilah, I have wills of my ancestors and when there is an X there it means someone signed for them The X is their mark and someone else wriote their name. This is on the wills I have , I don't know how it's used other places. Sandra
That probably stands for 'unknown' or 'none'. delilah evans At 07:49 8/27/03 EDT, you wrote: >I found my grandmothers name in an Atlanta City directory and her middle >initial was listed as "X." >Does anyone know weather this is for a middle name or because she had no >middle name? >And if it is a middle name what woman's names begin with "X"? >Thanks, >Darlene > > >==== GEORGIA Mailing List ==== >If you wish to unsubscribe from the Georgia list, send only the word >UNSUBSCRIBE to GEORGIA-l-request@rootsweb.com or if you are on the Digest >List to GEORGIA-d-request@rootsweb.com > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
I found my grandmothers name in an Atlanta City directory and her middle initial was listed as "X." Does anyone know weather this is for a middle name or because she had no middle name? And if it is a middle name what woman's names begin with "X"? Thanks, Darlene
snip > I found my grandmothers name in an Atlanta City > directory and her middle > initial was listed as "X." snip When a person couldn't write or didn't want to bother with a signature, an X was frequently inserted in the middle of their name, below their name, after their name etc. as the persons mark. Walt Boswell Sorry, I didn't have the first names. I will keep your family names while I am researching Mine. Sandra
Sorry I can't help you with the location of the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandra, but I'm wondering if your Talbot County source listed any given names for the early members of this church. I would really like to know what member or members of the HELMS family belonged to Liberty Baptist. (My second great grand aunt Sarah Frances BOSWELL of Talbot County married a William A. HELMS. They were Primitive Baptists, but they're buried in the Flint River Baptist Church Cemetery in Upson County,) GA.)
