Thank you to all who replied to my e-mail about not being able to access the Georgia GenWeb Archives. The problem has been solved (for me), but the link on the main page does need to be fixed. Until they fix it, here is the link for the GEORGIA GenWeb Archives page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm the Family Group Sheets Project for Georgia is moving, but here is the new address: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/georgia The explanatory FGS page (which notifies you that they have moved but the site is not accessible yet) has links to the US GenWeb, the Georgia GenWeb, and the Georgia GenWeb Archives. That's how I finally got to the archives and accessed records for Elbert County (which is what I was trying to do) and found exactly what I was looking for --- the list of 1827 Land Lottery winners and the person (John Butler) who won the land in Troup County (later changed to Meriwether) eventually sold to my GGGG grandfather, Robert Boyd. (I was going purely on a hunch based on the time frame). John Butler died in 1834 in Elbert County and his daughter was executrix of his estate (this is all in the deed in Meriwether). She put the land up for public sale and Robert Boyd was the highest bidder. I found the deed at the Meriwether County Courthouse yesterday. Robert paid $250 for 202 1/2 acres of land, LL 269 in the 9th district of formerly Troup, now Meriwether County --- that's the whole land lot. Robert Boyd died in 1846 in Meriwether County and mentioned this land in his will. I was curious as to how he came by it since he is my brick wall. I am not related to the Butlers, but for those who are, you can probably find this information in the Elbert County estate records in the Probate Judge's office there. I will be posting this deed to the Meriwether Archives and, probably, the Elbert County Archives too, since that was the origination of the transaction. Thanks to all for your help. Please don't send any more replies with the Web address. I have it now, thanks to all you helpful researchers. Thanks, Judy

My experience is that, if the person had no middle name, either they picked a middle name [My paternal grandfather did this.] or just used first name and last name. My female ancestors sometimes did and sometimes did not use their maiden name with their first name and last name. (I wish all of them did: I have a problem line in which the women didn't do this and for which I have almost no maternal line information.) Elizabeth Whitaker
The X could be just gobbledy-gook.
I think we put Detective Columbo to shame!
I agree. I don't think those that were unable to write were so identified with the middle initial "X". If that were the case there should be an unusual number of X's for a M.I. in that directory.
Possible X. could stand for Xaviera.
Darlene I will have to go back to the Columbus (Georgia) Baptist Assoc. and see if they mention the town or area. I remember he was a Rail Road man. By his age, it looks like he was working for the Rail Road same time as my grandpapa. My grandpapa Harry Waldrop worked for the Mobile anbd Ohio (M & O) from 1890 until 1924. Thanks for your help.
