The Militia Districts of Georgia underwent a "name" change during the 1820s. During that itme, Militia Districts names evolved from the name of the Captian of the Dist. to numeric names like you'll find on later Census and Tax Records. The name change wasn't a single event in time and happened through-out the decade (depending on the county.) In Greene Co., for example, the 1822 tax list has both the Captian's name and the numeric designation. Oh yeah.. As you might expect, during the time that the Captian's name was used as the Dist. name, the Dist. name would change when it's Captian did. So a measure of care should be exercised when evaluating Dist. data from this time frame as location data. if you order his death certificate it might have the parents name on it but it looks like the Walter Marsh Smith was born in Tennessee and so were his parents. I will look again in the 1920 as now I know from the 1930 about when he was born. To get a death certificate from Georgia, go to the following link: http://www.ph.dhr.state.ga.us/ Scroll down. Under Frequent Destinations (on left of page), select Death Certificate, and follow directions. A death certificate from GA costs $10.00. The last one I ordered took about 5 to 6 weeks to arrive. I am desperate for information on Joseph Roberts who lived in Hancock County until after 1830. He then moved to Warren County where he died Oct 22, 1836 or 1837. His second wife, s name was Clarissa Wright (widow). He had a son named Burch Roberts by his first wife. Burch is my gggrandfather and I have not been able to find his mother.
