The county where I have been doing lookups for people have recently closed the death records. They will only make certified copies, but they have allowed me to see the certificates and I can write down the information on paper. Not the same as having the hard copy, but the best I can do with limited income. Doris
I don't know about other counties, but Greene County will. I copied some about a year ago. Lanelle
My experience with death certificates in Georgia is different from Phyllis's. I've found only one county health dept. that would let me look at a death certificate without paying $10.00, and they let me do this only once. I happened to be the only person in the waiting room, and I think they felt sorry for me. I've found one, small county where the death certificates are kept at the courthouse instead of the health dept. The clerk allowed me to look at several death certificates and photocopy one. In all other counties, and I've been to several, I've always had to pay the $10.00. I had a friend who used to say, "People who want ancestors have to be willing to pay for them." I always think about her when I order another death certificate. Sure, you can go to counties and copy what you need. Also, you can copy from microfilm, etc. at libraries, archives, etc. That is- IF you can go there. That's the way I do the marriage licenses in Pike Co. > Stephanie Bradley Stephanie, Until recently I was able to get photo copies of death certificates in several nearby counties, but when I went to do some lookups last month I was told that death certificates had been ordered closed. The clerk did pull them for me and allowed me to write down the information. I was able to get the name of parents for two relatives that I was having problems with. Big disagreement as to which John Doe was the son of Sam Doe. We now have the right child with the right father. What made it even more confusing was that both fathers had married women with the same name, first and last. With all the problems with Identity thieves, many of the states are now closing records that we need for genealogy. I cannot afford to buy certified copies of each death certificate, that would quickly get into the hundreds of dollars. It looks like researchers should be able to get access to these records without paying such high prices. Doris
Not that I know of. I know you can't do that in Richmond and Columbia County. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SBrad1249@aol.com> To: <GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 08, 2003 8:12 PM Subject: [GEORGIA] Death Certificates > Just curious--are there no counties in GA that will allow you to come in and > copy death certificates just for the cost of the copy--about 25 cents --the > way you can marriage licenses and wills? Hi Sandra, In your original post you noted: > My gr grandpapa : 1827 Georgia Land Lottery > District: 15 > Lot: 138 > County: Muscogee And you noted in a later response: > Correction: In the below message I said Howard > Community was in Harris > County, but I reread Virginia's message and Howard > Commuity is in Taylor County, > Georgia. I am sorry for the mistake. Sandra I located the Howard Community in Taylor Co., (using Tiger mapping) and compared it's location to Land Lottery District 15 (on the STATE OF GEORGIA - ORIGINAL AND 1895 COUNTIES AND LAND LOT DISTRICTS which I acquired from the Georgia Archives) and guess what?! It appears that all the environs of the Howard Community in Taylor Co. were part of the 15th Land Lottery District. Oh and BTW... Land Lottery Districts and Militia Districts are two entirely different animals. I'm going to introduce a third piece of location data that I use and that is the watershed where the land was. This piece of info is commonly found in Deed Records and Tax Lists of the time. You can use the combination of Land Lottery District, Militia District and Watershed data to zero in with a fair degree of accuracy on where the land was. Some words of warning though... This is by no means easy as creek names tend to change over time. If you can't initially find your target creek, follow it to it's confluence with a larger stream or river. Often times you'll find it thereabouts. For example: All the tributaries of Shoulderbone Creek (of Greene and Hancock Counties) have been named something else over time, but they all empty into the the Oconee River as one creek, and there it's known as Shoulderbone. Also I hope you know that you're bordering dangerously close to another obsessive-compulsive subset of genealogical research and that is area research! :-) Hope this helps, Lee __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yes, you can. I know I did in Jackson Co. Bea
Stephanie: You are referring to non-certified death certificates. Some states allow non-certified copies of the death certificates at a reduced rate, but usually more than the cost of the copy. Georgia does not provide for this. However, I have run across some funeral homes who place a copy of the obit and death certificate in their files and will copy them for relatives or descendants at copy cost only. This is not the norm, but it's worth asking. Alabama has put the information of interest to researchers from their older death certificates (non-certified, of course) on microfilm and made them available to researchers. It would be wonderful if Georgia did this. Just curious--are there no counties in GA that will allow you to come in and copy death certificates just for the cost of the copy--about 25 cents --the way you can marriage licenses and wills? Even the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT doesn't have film of the actual death certificates. You have to get the date and then send for the document. Does anyone know whether bastardy bonds were required in Georgia in the 1850s? The area I'm particularly interested in is Hickory Level, Carroll County, GA. If they were used in that area at that time, any idea of books or other sources? Thanks, Beth
My mistake! The Columbia County where my Winn and Greens died was in Arkansas. I need to read the header more carefully. Mary in CA
How do I could go about obtaining a copy of the estate papers for someone who died in Campbell County in 1841? I don't think he had a Will but he did have in testate records. I am also interested in the contact information for anyone in the local area that I could pay to obtain the copies for me and mail them to me? Correction: In the below message I said Howard Community was in Harris County, but I reread Virginia's message and Howard Commuity is in Taylor County, Georgia. I am sorry for the mistake. Sandra Hi Lee, Thank you so much for your help. Altho it helps, it makes it a bit more confusing. So as the Captains name's changed, so did the Captain 's District. I've have wonderful instructions as to how visit Harris County and maps from Virginia Crilly. Virginia wrote me that Howard was a community in Harris County. I am trying to pin Howard down so I will know where the Land (1827) might have been. I am trying to zero in on my gr grandpapa's land and Virginia Crilly has gone above and beyond her duty. Rex2 of Harris County has been a great help also with his knowledge of Harris County. There are no maps with Howard Community, I wonder if anyone remembers Howard Community in Harris. Thank you for your reply and helping me. Sandra maiden name Waldrop Geoergia

Sandra, could this be Captain Caruthers' District as in Georgia the areas were measured in Military Districts as Georgia was not laid off in 640 acre square mile sections. George in Leeds, AL
