    1. Re: [GEORGIA] Marriage Custom Question
    2. In researching my family in North Alabama I have found several mentions of people being married in the middle of the road. After I saw that several times, I decided it must just have been a "fad" of the time period or something. I haven't noticed that happening in my Georgia family though. Pat

    3. Joe, Thanks for sharing this story. Brings to mind *Bridges of Madison County.* As for the newspaper article, I thought the parental objections may have been so strong that the couple did not want to involve anyone else. But felt that they could have been married in the courthouse or some neutral ground. Then I considered that this might be a custom if the couple were already in a family way and had been condemned by both sets of parents. Wish I had a definite answer. Thanks for your response. 3. My great grandparents married on a bridge over the Suwanee River in Florida. They had eloped because her father didnot want them to marry. She was from Madison County and my great grandfather was from Hamilton County. The marriage was registered in Suwanee County. Apparently, they didn't require parental consent for a 16 year old girl. Maybe the other couple wanted to do it as a protest to the parents or they simply wanted a little publicity. 3. Can anyone tell me why a couple would get married in the middle of a public road as in the following Pike County, Georgia, marriage announcement from an 1895 newspaper? Although it states that there were parental objections, I don't know the reason for the marriage to take place in a road. I have a second marriage notice for another couple that states they, too, were married in a public road, so I surmise that there was a specific reason for this. The Pike County Journal. Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, May 31, 1895 Marriage On Sunday afternoon about three o'clock, Mr. James R. Bennett of Griffin, was united in marriage to Miss Zella Davis of Zetella, the ceremony being performed by Rev. J.A. Drewry. There being parental objections on the part of the young ladies parents, the marriage took place in the public road about a mile east of Zetella near the Dupree place, after which the party returned to Griffin. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Davis and is a most charming young woman and the groom is a young gentleman who is well known and popular. The young couple have many friends to tender congratulations. They are at present domiciled at the home of Mr. Bennett's parents in Griffin. (Transcribed 11/03/02 Lynn Cunningham)

    3. The Fish Ponds (Thlotlogalgua, or Laloakalka) was so far as I can recall, the only Creek talwa that was almost universally referred to by English speaking people by its name translated into English rather than in Muskogean. Talwa was the word for a town, but it had dimensions broader than the meaning of the word town in English. I am not a Muskogee speaker and am unable to translate Sappeloke. In Muskogee loke means "eater" or "devourer" but I can't get a fix on Sappe from a dictionary. There is no standard spelling and sounds are represented very differently by various writers. My best guess would be that Sappeloke was either a place name associated with these Parkers and that they were of Creek ancestry, or that it was the name of a Creek ancestor. I suggest getting in touch with "Sappeloke1832" (See: : http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/PARKER/2003-07/1058560227 ) It just happens that 1832 was the year of most of the Creek census made before removal, so you might find something by looking for Sappeloke and Parker on it... His name was Robert Griffee and from a 1920 census I found, he was probably born in 1888 and it said he was born in Georgia. My dad (that would be Robert's grandson) thinks he was born in Olgethorpe Co., but is not certain. I live in Virginia so its hard for me to check anything that's not found on the Internet. 1. [GEORGIA] From List Mom - A few items to help you.
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller’s Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message that need me then and there. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding the the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. 1. [GEORGIA] Polk County Cemeteries - Can You Help?
    2. Can anyone give better directions to the following cemeteries in Polk County? Davis Cemetery - East of Jackson Chapel Church. Could have another name, but mainly Davis Family buried in this cemetery. Davittee Family Cemetery - Between Taylorsville & Aragon at Dan's Cave Hampton-Barnett Cemetery - County Road 693, SE of Cedartown Pollard Cemetery - No location given. Prior Family Cemetery - Hwy 27 N.W. Think this is a Black cemetery. South Side at Benedict - Is this the same cemetery as South View on Powell Drive? Whatley Cemetery - NE of Cedartown. Some of these cemeteries are Black cemeteries, but not positive which ones except Prior Family Cemetery on Hwy 27 NW. The Polk County Cemetery Preservation Committee would like to find these cemeteries so we can evaluate them for possible cleanup and preservation. If you have any information about the landowners or guardians, we would like that information also. If you have not been to our web site, it is located at <A HREF="http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html"> http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html</A> New information is being added almost daily. Drop by soon and see what all is going on with the cemetery preservation project. You may be pleasantly surprised. Doris Robbins

    1. [GEORGIA] Harris County, Ga
    2. Delilah
    3. For those researching this county in Ga., there is a great book "History of Harris County, Ga. 1827 - 1961", most libraries should have it, it also has an index that goes with it - it has cemeteries, churches, family histories, and info on the communities - it was done by Louise Calhoun Barfield, Columbus, Ga. I got the marriages from the book 1827 - 1868. BTW, if anyone finds it for sale, I would like a copy. delilah evans houston county, ga.
