I have been researching Spiers/Spires in Dooly Co., 1800's, and noticed there are several families by that name living in the area....is anyone else researching Spires/Spiers who has not been successful? Perhaps we could find a connection thanks Sandy
I am getting nothing on the Georgia-D digest except the address, subject & then a blank page. Thanks.
The Georgia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 39, Number 3, Fall 2003 is out. Pages 166-167 of the magazine contain a previously unknown document on Josiah Gay of Laurens County (though which one is unclear, Josiah Sr. who m. Sarah Bedingfield is my guess). Laurens County, Georgia, Deeds of Trust and Gift, Volume C (1828-1851), Page 93: Received of Josiah Gay the sum of $500 in full payment for a negro boy by name Mike age 12 years the title to whom I warrant and defend from any and every other persons...20th April 1837. Signed Reuben Warren and Mary (x) Warren. Witness: Davis Joiner.

BTW: I'm not sure if deaths at Savannah were all from sickness and/or accidents in this period or if there were ongoing combat operations that might have resulted in casualies. My impression, though, is that Screven's Ferry would not have been a very likely place to have seen combat at that time... as it was "behind" Savannah from the sea, where the Union threat was then. Perhaps the cause of Frederick Thompson's death can be found in his Compiled Confederate Service Record which is available on microfilm from the National Archives. RW
No, sorry, I don't have any more info on the Manning files. The info I have was ALL from S.C.
I'm trying to assist Tammy in her question about Co K - 29th and the burial of her ancestor, Frederick K. Thompson. 1)Does anyone know where Screven's Ferry Georgia was? If we can locate this spot perhaps there is a burial ground for CSA soldiers there. 2)Was a Battle Fought there in May 1862 --- or did the two men just die of disease in camp on that day? Could this have been a hospital site? 3)Does anyone of Virgil White's book and might be able to see if his widow may have filed for a pension at some time? Melvina Thompson 29th Infantry Regiment, organized at Big Shanty, Georgia, during the summer of 1861, contained men from Thomas, Berrien, Tift, Stephens, and Dougherty counties. For a time Companies A and G served as heavy artillerists in the Savannah area and the rest of the command was at Charleston. It then was assigned to General Wilson's, C.H. Stevens', and H.R. Jackson's Birgade, and in September, 1863, was consolidated with the 30th Regiment. The unit participated in the difficult campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and fought at Bentonville. In December, 1863, the 29th/30th totalled 341 men and 195 arms, but few surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels W.D. Mitchell, R. Spaulding, and William J. Young; Lieutenant Colonels T.W. Alexander and W.W. Billopp; and Majors Levi J. Knight, John C. Lamb, and John J. Owen. Co K was reorganized as Co C May 7, 1862. Frederick G. I am researching a Spires/Spiers family who possibly lived in the following areas in 1800's counties: Dooly,Pulaski,Forsyth,Gwinnet......names in this family were James R. Spiers/Spires, John Spires, Mary Spires.......thank you Sandy
For those of you who didn't know about the book. The Historical Society is trying to publish a pictorial history of Pike Co. I don't have a list of families included yet. We are still gathering photos. There are many wonderful ones that have been sent in and I can't wait for you all to see them. We have two or three of baptisms in the river from various churches in the communtiy from the turn of the last century.. Also several have been sent in of classes at the schools . Some of those date back to the 1920's. I am particularly proud of the ones that have been sent in of the veterans of various wars. Many families have dug deep and sent those of their ancestors and some of older buildings in the county. All in all we have a wide selection--but we would love to have even more. Please send your photos in. E-mail them if you like--but save to files of at least 300 dpi. If you want to contribute or order send them to: Pike County Historical Society PO Box 700 Zebulon, Ga 30295 If you have further questions feel free to e-mail me at SBRAD1249@aol.com

Claudia Are your Cannady's connected to Soloman Cannady who was the father of Isham Crosby? He was born in SC. Isham was born in Appling Co., Ga about 1835 served in the Civil War and never returned although according to the civil war records he was paroled in 1865 in Thomasville, Ga. His mother was Rebecca Crosby. The Manning files are personal papers of research done by the Manning family. They are not documents. You can find them at the library in Barnwell Co, SC. I have been told there work has several errors. I haven't been to Barnwell as yet but a friend made copies for me and mailed them to me. The only documentation that listed on the Kennedy/Cannady was from census records. I would like to compare there findings with court records, marriage records, will records, census records, etc.... I know there were several volumes. I believe the Kennedy info was in volume 9 or ten.
What exactly are the Manning Files? I have never heard of these. Joe There was a Soloman in the early census records in Emanuel County, GA., and our "old John Cannady" named a son Solomon also. We don't have the name Isham in the family. There is a cemetery in Colleton County, SC full of our Cannady's and their is an area named Cannady's. Colleton borders Orangeburg and is not far from Barnwell. I know our the Cannady's in this area are related to our Cannady's who came to Georgia. In the Manning Files it says Edmund Cannady, probably went out west. We have an Edmund Cannady in the 1810 census in Emanuel County. I am sure this is where our bunch came from. This is a website that shows the counties in SC. http://www.sccounties.org/counties/counties.htm

Emmie Census records show our Cannady/Kennedy bunch to be from SC. POWG also links the Cannady and Edenfields of Barnwell and the Orangeburg Districts in SC. Another surnamed linked is Horn(e)s. Our Cannady's were in Georgia by 1810 and probably prior. Do any of your documents link up your Silas Cooper family with these familes? Thanks Claudia
