    1. Re: [GEORGIA] Athens - State Normal School 1924
    2. I have been told that my grandfather, John Allen McWhorter, attended the State Normal School in Athens. The year probably would have been about 1900-1905. He was teaching school in Carroll County when he met my grandmother (she was a student) -- and married her. Would anyone know where there might be records of students in the Normal school in the earlier years? Thomas Newton McWhorter (my grandfather's uncle) also attended school there. They both taught in Carroll, then my grandfather taught in Randolph County, GA, then they joined up again and taught school in Turin, Coweta County. Thomas Newton McWhorter ended up teaching at Campbell High in Campbell County. My grandfather gave it up and went to work for the railway as a mail clerk. Mom said he couldn't feed his family on a teacher's salary. But I would love to find a record of some kind where he attended school in Athens. Thanks, Judy in Newnan, GA

    3. Charles, Thank you very much for the offer, I will keep that in mind. I bet you had a wonderful time going to the reunion with your mother. Did many of them remember each other? That was the biggest surprise that I got when I went back for some of my reunions...I think the largest shock was the 5th one...most of us had changed so much...it is amazing what a few pounds will do to a person...after that we have recognized each other when we see someone. Back in May, I had open heart surgery. After I came home after being in the hospital and rehab for a couple of months and was feeling good again. I went to the store and saw a former student....I noticed that she kept looking at me and so concerned...well, she was concerned, she is such a sweet girl...but I didn't realize that my hair looked so differently...I had not used any rinse and a few more gray hairs were showing than usual...some of those medicines that they use, help to speed that along, also. I assured her that I was all right. Thank you again for offering the information. 3. POUND Auditorium! Cannot answer with 100% certainty but apparently this was named for the President of the college who in 1925 was Dr. Jere M. Pound. That info is in The Crystal which is the school annual. I have my mother's annual she was class president in 1925 if anyone wants a look up just ask me. When she was in her 80's I went with her to a class reunion..... had a great time with the old ladies... quite a nice group of people. Just wanted to share that with you and offer to look up anything in the books I have.
