    1. Re: [GEORGIA] traveling photographers in the rural South
    2. Did anyone ever answer the original question about why the family brought a picture outside and hung it behind the family for the group photograph? I assume the photograph was of "someone in the family" but was there a specific custom as to who that would be? (Was it always someone related to the husband - his parents perhaps? Or was it a "random relative"?) (There is a photograph of our family taken ~1895 that has such a picture behind the grouping. Is it reasonable to assume the picture is of his father?) 1. [GEORGIA] Pruden's Arlillery
    2. Crilley
    3. Don Collin's shared the pension application of Enoch Collins. (Taylor County) ..who was a member of Pruden's Artillery... This led me to seek info about this group... not sure where or when they mustered. Enoch Collins was a member from "seven months from 1864 to 1865" -- and perhaps it was one of those formed near the close of the war. anyway, as I glanced down this list -- I recognized some other Taylor County men... it seemed perhaps these were older men (the ones too old for a normal regiment). Take a look and see if you locate any of your ancestors. I'd love to gather more information about this unit and post it on our pages. http://ranger95.crosswinds.net/civil%20war/georgia/ Scroll down to Artillery and it is in alphabetical order. Thought you might glance at this list and see if you recognized any other names. Virginia Crilley

    1. [GEORGIA] Hamlin Cem Jones Co - Joyce Green
    2. Crilley
    3. We're trying to get in touch with Joyce Green. I'm not sure she is on-line, but she has done lots of transcribing over the years for Georgia counties like Jones Co. I'm specifically seeking information (which we think she may have had from Bobby Stokes (a wonderful researcher, now deceased) on HAMLIN CEMETERY , Jones County. We believe this is located on land once owned by Mrs. Asa Carson. Those known buried there are: Adam Carson Richard Hamlin (possibly a Rev War patriot) We think the location may be near Otis Redding Rd. or adjacent to Otis Redding Ranch. Perhaps 11th district, lot 5.... If you have information on this cemetery -- the Carson or Hamlin family -- or can help me get in touch with Joyce Green, I'd really appreciate it. Virginia Crilley

    1. [GEORGIA] Polk County Cemetery Photos
    2. The Polk County (GA) Cemetery Preservation web site at <A HREF="http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html"> http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html</A> has been updated with photos from several additional cemeteries. Among them are Bethlehem Cemetery, Brumby Cemetery, Hubbard-Brooks Cemetery, Morgan Cemetery, Prior Cemetery, and Young's Family Cemetery. We also updated the Etna Cemetery photos. Several cemetery clean up projects have been started and phase I has been completed at several more cemeteries. Check out the "Work Days" web page for more information on the different projects. Anyone that would like to help with the clean up projects should contact Michael Robbins at MRobbins54@hotmail.com or they can e-mail me at Elantr@aol.com You may also call 770-646-0013 or write: PCCPC P. O. Box 57 Felton, GA 30140 Most of the projects will start up again after the holidays. Volunteers are need for more than just the cemetery clean up. We need people to help survey (record) the cemeteries and people to do research on the cemeteries. Our way of restoring dignity to our ancestors final resting place. Doris

    2. What a beautiful, beautiful story. I am so sorry for your pain and suffering along with your mama's loss. My dad born 1906, no war, my husband born 1940, no war, my son 1966 no war, my grandson 1996, on God knows what is in store for him. I can't say I know what you and your mom went thru. I would like to send in a fews prayers dated back to the time of you needed them and God and Jesus comforted you. I know God, the Father can back date any prayer. Oh yes, I was born and raised in Columbus , Georgia , raised here and still live here. My oldest sister Juanita Waldrop graduated from Jordan High School in 1947, my sister Norma Waldrop graduated in 1949 from Jordan. I graduated from Jordan in 1957/ It's my home town and it has grown like you wouldn't believe. Take Care, Sandra maiden name Waldrop Georgia

    1. [GEORGIA] Where Were You?
    2. On December 7th, 1941, it was our custom to get up and attend church. However on this morning several of us had fever, sore throats and a hacking cough. So our parents kept us all in bed giving us the usual home remedies. I was half asleep when suddenly I began to hear church bells ringing. At first, there were only a few and then more and more joined in until bells were ringing throughout the entire city of Columbus, Georgia. We quickly got out of bed and looked out the window and saw so many of our neighbors in the street talking with each other and trying to find out just what was going on. My father was sitting listening to the radio and suddenly, he got up and told us that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. We saw his face, pale and drawn, for he knew what it all meant. He had three sons and a son-in-law who would be involved in war. He had been through World War 1 and had endured the sufferings of that war. This time it would be different. He would see his sons leave to fight, just as his mother had done in the first one. Our city that day was in amazement for we all were saying,"How could this have happened?. And so for the next years to come, I saw my brothers go to war, one died, my brother-in-law was a prisoner of the Germans, one brother wounded severely on Iwo Jima, one wounded in Germany who later died from his wounds. I later married and my husband with the 82nd Air Borne was injured and so we as so many others felt the horrors of that war. And this was the war that would end all wars. I have since had a son wounded in Vet Nam suffering from Agent Orange, and a grandson just returned from Iraq. As long as men are greedy, there will be wars and I praise God that he allowed me to be an American where the true citizens of this country know that freed om must be fought for and that we will have to defend it throughout the life of mankind. Our young men, willing to go in 1941, who have gone each time they have been called upon, deserve our heartfelt thanks, our praise and our prayers. May God Bless America Pat in FL

    3. Any idea who Grace Lavinia was named for? My Harris line is through Thompson Harris and Nancy Ursery and Lavinia West Thompson's second wife. Thompson and Nancy Harris were my ggrandparents through their son Hampton Harris. Lavinia West second wife of Thompson had a daughter also named Lavinia West. Hampton and Lavinia married and had three children. John Wesley Harris, William Monroe Harris and Emma Harris. John Wesley Harris was my grandfather. He married Susan "Susie" Elizabeth Stewart. They had one child, my father, George Wesley Harris, March 13, 1919, Ware County, Waycross, GA. He is still living in Tampa, FL.

    1. Re: [GEORGIA] traveling photographers in the rural South
    2. Gerald Gieger
    3. There were at least two kinds of Photographers...one type came around to homes and knocked on the door...some of these would have small horses or ponies, or carts pulled by a goat...they specialized in taking photos of children; but they would also take family portraits outside with t he home in the background...People just brought their chairs outside and made the group shot, behind the camera with his head under the hood, the photographer would look thru the lens and set up exactly as he wanted, then slip in the film and shoot the photo...He would then take it back to his dark room, usually in his home and develop the film...then h e would black out all the doors or windows in the background and print the photo...You got the final in a few weeks...sometimes after he came back and tried to sell you additional prints for the various shots or sizes...same thing that Olin Mills, etc. do today, only now they do it by appointment in their studio... The second made photos in the Train stations, or on the street downtown; in short, anywhere they could get people to stop and wait...I have one of my two grandmother's walking down main street, all dressed up, but with shopping bags in their hands...these were about the size of a postcard and usually cost $0.25 or a little more...but that was 'real' money on those days... Between and during WW-I & II, they developed those 'photo booths' and folks could go inside and get about 1.5 inch square sepia prints @ about $1 for 5 poses...on the spot (usually about 15 minutes). They were located in all sorts of businesses like drug stores, plus all the bus or train depots for travelers...air-travel did not exist until the 1940's... >From: Richard White <rw@pone.com> >Reply-To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com >To: GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] traveling photographers in the rural South >Date: Sun, 07 Dec 2003 03:56:00 -0500 > > >Angela... > >I don't know it as a fact, but I'm under the impression that at least some >photographers pretty much set up a portable booth beside the street. Thearon A. Blankenship S1C of USS Arizona. He still is a crew member serving on his duty station. 21 years old, A native of Morgan Co., Al. According to my genealogy chart he was my 4th cousin once removed. Growing up he was cousin Thearon. There is an empty grave at New Center Baptist Church in Morgan Co. The headstone gives the dates of birth and death and states. Remember Pearl Harbour. The other is not a relative, except by profession he is my brother. I was Navy he was Army. Col John Wesley Loud was a First Lieutenant in the field artillary, stationed at Ft De Russy. His large guns were too big to fire at the attacking planes, so he grabbed a Springfield and shot away. `He and his bride of 4 months had hosted a party the night before at the O club. In a few days she was bound stateside while John went south and participated in the Solomons campaign. After that he came back stateside for a few months and the headed to Europe where he participated in many large battles as a field intelligence officer. He then was active in the Military government of Germany and returned to Civilian life in 1948. Like me he kept his military affilation through the reserves. He retired a COL. He and I were in the Old Guard of the Gate City Guard together. We lost John this past year and we do miss him so. Rest in peace brothers. 3. KUnderwood, The Underwood in question was found to be James Underwood, son of Dolphus Underwood and Chili Covington, both of Bartow County Ga. in 1870. In the 1860 Census, James Underwood b. 1865 in Tn is in the household with Chili Covington, dau of Andrew Jackson Covington. Dolphus Underwood aka D. E. or Dolphus Ervin Underwood is also listed but only Chili as the head of household.. (Also found that a Ervin/Irwin Underwood married Chili Covington on March 9,1865 in Cherokee Co.) 1870 Bartow Co. Census Underwood, Chili age 25 Ga. -James age 4 Tn -Wiley, Edward age 11 Ga. farm laborer -Underwood, Dolphus age 25 Ga. farm laborer In the 1880 Census of Bartow Co. Ga. we find D. E. Underwood and children, but without wife, Martha. Underwood, D E age 36 born GA GA GA -no wife listed -James son 15 TN -Minnie dau 9 AR -Morgan son 6 AR -Louisa dau 4 AR -Zack son 1 AL This family went to Blount County Alabama in early 180s, D.E. or Dolphus Ervin married again in 1882 to Nancy Elizabeth Copeland. They had three children: Dalsia Victoria Underwood b. 1883 (m. Wm Cornelius) Albert Henry Underwood b.1886 (m. Emmer McCuller)(my line) Ervin Earcy Underwood b. Feb 11,1888 (m. Mary Elizabeth Allen). Their father, D.E. died in Nov 5, 1887 in the fall before Ervin Ercy was born. James being the oldest child has been difficult to track, and is believed to be the one who went to Texas in the early 1900s. Morgan, the other 'older' brother, is believed to have been in Memphis and was a policeman or some kind of peace officer, and also elusive to track.
