Dear List Members, Please remember that I too see the off topic message and deal with them behind the scenes. By posting your unhappiness to a off topic message on the list you just continue on the problem for all of us. Keep in mind that we are now in that time of year when we suddenly get new members with that new computer...many who have never been on a mailing list before. They will make mistakes and I will take care of the educating of them personally one on one. I appreciate each of you and know that our list is the success it is because of you. Linda has shared a wonderful listing for the War of 1812 Wootten's Company. I'm just listing the beginning --- but you can see the entire list on http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military/military.htm#1812 I would like to get more information on all these men... as I'm sure they moved on westward --- Does anyone know who this Wootten (Wooten) might be? I notice at this site http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/crkindw.htm that names of the members of different units are published. If someone will tell me where to go to get the information on Captain Berry's Volunteers from Marion County, Georgia, I will write for the info so it can be published at this site. Thank you. JC
Thank you all for sharing your family photo stories. At least I know my family wasn't wacky bringing pictures of their dead realtives outside to be included in the photo. I hope to find more about this custom. Just so you will all know, the Birmingham library did respond to my request for help. [Thank you, Pat, for suggesting that.] They didn't find much on Lollard's, but the librarian found two sources of material on the itinerant photographer. The first is a book, which I am going to try and get through inter-library loan. The second is a masters thesis, which would be harder to locate. The sources are: Title: The itinerant photographer, Author(s): Chappell, George H. Publication: New York, N.Y., Schoenig & company, inc. Year: 1936 Title: Professors, itinerants and kidnappers : ininerant photography in America / Author(s): Miller, Sybil Ann. Year: 1983 Please give me a chance to find the book first before you all request it too. It's so old, there may only be a few copies of it in the country. I need it for the first part of my book and I want to finish that rather quickly. I will be glad to post some of the types of information it contains and in which library the book resides after I read it, then you will all know where to request it if you have further interest. I would think it would be reasonable to assume the photo was someone "near and dear" to the family. I have a photo with an empty baby carriage sitting with the family, no doubt commemorating the passage of an infant that the family wanted remembered. I have seen that kind of memorializing in several photos. I doubt a "random" relative would be so included. Often you can see a family likeness to an adult "living" member of the family. I have a group picture of my daddy's family taken in October 1898 in front of their home near Moran in Crawford County, GA. Everyone seems to be in their 'Sunday best' - the parents, (William Floyd Chancellor and his wife Queen Elizabeth Allen Chancellor); three of their surviving sons (Charlie, William and Zebbie Chancellor), a daughter-in law (Zillah Chancellor, wife of Charlie Chancellor) holding a baby (Elizabeth), another daughter-in-law (Anna with her two children, Jeffie and Allen). The oldest son (Floyd Chancellor) had died two years earlier) and his large portrait in leaning against the fence next to Jeffie (his 4-year-old daughter). The price of $1.98 is on the back. There is a separate picture of the other son, Elmore Chancellor, apparently taken at the same time. He is standing beside a table on which is (probably) the Family Bible. Amma C.
