    3. I'm trying to build a roster for one of the companies in the Creek Indian War. I hope that someone might have an ancestor who also served. For this short term of service they were given bounty land and also later in life a pension. Capt. Alexander Russell Col Hardeman's Regiment (I think this was started in Monroe County...although I believe men joined up on their way to Columbus. (48 men enrolled) Time of service: June 1836 - July 1836 Ruffin, James J. 4th Serg Private Runnels, John We have a number of rosters for companied on-line -- but there were well over 100 companies so we have a lot to go. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military/indian.htm

    3. Not much to do on a dreary day like today, so I have been working on the Polk County, GA American History and Genealogy Project web site at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/ Put some pretty spring flowers on the main page. Also updates have been added to the Brickwall page, Cemetery Page, and Newspaper Articles. The biggest change has been to the obits pages. A researcher suggested that we put the alphabet table on each page to make navigating easier, so we have done just that - added the table to each page. If you have not been by lately, stop by and see all the changes. Doris Robbins elantr@earthlink.net Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

    3. RE: What kind of research are you doing? My great great grandfather fought in the Creek War in 1836. David I am interested in learning more of the history of the 1836 Creek Indian War. Thanks to: Richard White http://tfn.net/~cdk901/index.html and Harry Folsomhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/crkindw.htm#news , I have a better understanding of the War. From the above websites, I learned the following: May 20, 1836 The Columbus Sentinel published the following list of Georgia Militia Companies that had arrived: County Drafted/Volunteers Captain # Harris Drafted VARDERMAN 62 Also, that H.H.DOWE was an officer from Harris County. GA. Does anyone have information on Harris County Companies/lists of the men? I am looking for SAMUEL TURMAN. Family history says that my g.g. grandfather, "SAMUEL TURMAN and his family moved from Elbert Co, GA. to Harris Co, GA, a little previous to 1836 or 37, when he volunteered in the Creek Indian War. He died from bilious fever contracted in that war." Thank you, David, Richard and Harry for your responses! Eugenia

    3. Beth, Jimmy is correct in his information. District 21 was one of the gold districts. In 1832 surveyors laid off the Lottery area into 4 sections with land districts about nine miles square. The land districts had lots of 40 or 160 acres each. Doesn't this sound similar to range, township and section? District 21 was split between Cass (now Bartow) and Cherokee Counties. It was the bottom right corner of Cass County. In township terms - District 21 was the SE section. Looking at a GA road map the lot would be east of Cartersville and could be located in or very close to Red Top Mountain State Park. I hope this helps. 3. Dear Virginia, I am doing some research on the 1836-37 Creek Indian War and came across your 2001 letter in the GA-ROOTS-L Archives. How delighted I am to see a letter with your current e-mail address on this List! Family history says that my g.g. grandfather, "SAMUEL TURMAN and his family moved from Elbert Co, GA. to Harris Co, GA, a little previous to 1836 or 37, when he volunteered in the Creek Indian War. He died from bilious fever contracted in that war." I was thrilled to come across your helpful 2001 reference to Christopher Kimball's information: (http://www.geocities.com/flaterritory/9805.html It sounds exactly what I was looking for! Unfortunately, it appears to no longer be accessible. Did you perhaps copy the history and time line and if so could you please share it with me? I would be so grateful if you or anyone on the List could help me !!! The name: Hardeman rings a bell, But I think that my recollection has to do with my great grandfather from GA: James Merriman ALSTON'S involvement in the Civil War. I will have a look. Perhaps we can exchange some information. Do any of you have pension applications/war records for your Georgia Ancestors who fought in this "brief" war (not to be confused with the earlier 1813 Creek War)? I'd like to try to put together some Rosters and companies....and since I can't get to Atlanta to the Archives for the microfilm, I thought perhaps we could just start and build the list a few men at a time. My g-grandfather earned two land warrants and later a pension based on this service....which was only about 3 months. He fought : Capt Alexander Russell Regiment commanded by Robert V. Hardeman Joined at Columbus, GA and was discharged from Camp Georgia, Alabama. Virginia

    1. Re: [GEORGIA] locating property from legal description
    2. Beth, First you will need to obtain a map of Bartow County showing the land lots, districts and sections. These usually are available at the courthouse, sometimes included in county history books, or someone online may have one they can scan and send you. I'm not familiar with what's available for Bartow online, but maybe someone else is. When land was ceded by the Indians, government surveyors came in and surveyed it, divided it up into Districts, sections and land lots, and then offered it to settlers, either through the lottery system or by direct sale. Land lots were usually 202 1/2 acres each, but some were less, some more, depending on the county. Find the district first, then the section, then the land lot within it. District numbers usually start at the lower right hand corner of the county and run from right to left, then above and left to right, then above and right to left, serpentine style. At least that's the way I've found most of the counties I've researched in. Bartow may be different, but once you get the map, it should be easy. Now ... when I get ready to find my townships and ranges in Alabama, will you help me? I'm still in the dark on those suckers. Hope this helps, Judy in Newnan

    3. Chris Kimball moved his Dreaded Florida Territory web pages to Tallahassee Freenet some time ago and left a redirecting link at GeoCities, but unfortunately tfn has changed it's internal configuration of URL:s since then. The site can now be found at: http://tfn.net/~cdk901/index.html I don't think it very likely that you will find genealogically useful information there in a narrow sense, but reading the materials on the site does give a broad sweep of some of the things going on in Florida and can aid in gaining a general understanding of some of the history of the era on both sides of the Florida/Georgia line.
