    1. [GEORGIA] Prison in Georgia 1830's
    2. michelle ganus taggart
    3. Does anyone know anything about the prison system that was set up in Georgia in the 1830's and 1840's. My ancestor's brother is listed in "The Georgia Black Book" by Robert Scott Davis. It says that he was in Cass County and lists his crime as "escape". It says that he just served one term for 1 1/2 yrs. (1838-1840) I have not been able to find anything to help me understand what he might have done or if the prison was in Cass itself. Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome! thanks, Michelle

    3. Mary, Do you have birthdates on William L and Sarah ? Do you know of other siblings to Mary R. and Martha C.? I checked the 1860 Georgia Census using Soundex for William Yeargin. There is a William A. Yergin in Jackson County, wife Eliza, no children listed. William A. died in 1865 at Camp Chase Ohio. Whatever you have (and sources) please share so we can try to assist you. 1. [GEORGIA] Fincher Genealogy by genetics (DNA)
    2. Joy Fincher Atkinson
    3. Dear Listers, Would you forward the following letter to any Fincher or Fincher descendants you might know of. At one time or another Finchers lived in your area, hopefully some still do. We really appreciate your help, Joy Fincher Atkinson Dear Finchers, We are at a brick wall in our Fincher Family Tree research. We can go back no farther than 1812 in our line, and I think a good many of you are having the same problem. It is generally thought that most Finchers in America are related but the proof is either lost, destroyed or just plain never existed. Recently, we found out about a new tool to determine whether or not we are related. Genealogy by genetics (DNA) is being used by many family organizations to determine kinship. It is now possible to determine how far back you have to go in order to find your most recent common ancestor. Armed with this knowledge, we have established a Fincher family DNA project with Family Tree DNA. A company that specializes in the use of DNA for genealogical research. The purpose of this project is to connect the different Fincher lines. We hope to break through the brick walls and establish the connection between the various branches of the Fincher family. Since there is documentation to connect certain lines to the original immigrant, Francis Fincher, we hope that DNA will connect other lines to him as well. The test is simple and painless. Your genetic test kit consists of a cheek scraper and a collection tube. In about five minutes, you will be able to read the instructions and perform a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush. A backup scraper and tube is included to insure that a good sample is obtained by the lab. They intend that you use them both! There are two requirements to participate in the DNA project: (1) you have to be male (because only men carry and pass along the Y-Chromosome) and (2) you have to have the Fincher last name from your father not your mother. Only one male needs to be tested from each Fincher line. Thanks to Ann Fincher's book, FINCHER 300 YEARS IN THE USA, there is now a published genealogy of most of the Fincher branches. In order to save money, you may wish to check with your kin to make sure that two men from the same line are not being tested. Family Tree DNA offers two possible tests, a 12 marker test for $99.00 and a 25 marker test for $169.00. The company suggests starting with the 12 marker test to establish kinship and later upgrading to the 25 marker test to find the most recent common ancestor. Since we suspect that most Finchers are kin, unlike Smiths or Joneses, it is probably more cost effective to order the 25 marker test to begin with. Since it cost $90.00 to upgrade the 12 marker test to the 25 marker test, there is a $20.00 savings to order the 25 marker test initially. 1. [GEORGIA] Indian Wars
    2. Margie Daniels
    3. I am searching for stories of Georgians who served during the Indian wars and their the civilians that were killed in these wars. If you have any information I would greatly appreciate any data you have. Many times the only accounts of those that died are in newspapers. I am hoping that by transcribing and gathering data from newspapers I can help someone find their brick wall. If a place was burned and the entire family killed, often times the only way to discover what happened is through newspaper and stories handed down by family members. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagwmil/ Thanking you in advance for any help you may have. 3. Not sure if you meant history of or men who participated. White, Virgil Index to Volunteer Soldiers 1815-1858 This is a HUGE volume and listed every man's name , the state and the unit he served in -- but nothing else. There are also some Pension books which list the man's name and the # of his pension. I keep trying to get more on-line for this war. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military/indian.htm Rosters Stories and history http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/crkindw.htm Their military and pension records are available from the National Archives. And the more of these we get on-line the more that others will be helped by seeing what they contain. Did you have an ancestor who fought in the Indian Wars --- there were several and in fact the War of 1812 in western Ga was against the Indians. War of 1812 pensions have lots of genealogical information -- especially if a widow is involved.
