I have researched several of these men for my book on DeKalb County history. A few were prominent in the early years of the county. William Ezzard was one of the original settlers of DeKalb and served as DeKalb Superior Court judge (1840-44). He later moved to Atlanta and became mayor there. I don't know any first names from the rank-and-file, but I do know Henry B. Latimer and Alexander A. Heard. In addition to Ezzard's "Independent Guards," DeKalb had three other militia units during the Indian wars: Ezekiel Calhoun's "Light Infantry," Charles Parr's cavalry unit and another infantry unit led by Charles Latimer (father of the first female U. S. Senator, Rebecca Latimer Felton). If anyone wishes to know more about an individual, I will be happy to respond to private emails. I cannot post information, because the book is still being sold and is covered by copyright restrictions. Clarence Atkins got this listing from the Archives about 25 years ago, and I am so grateful that he is sharing this with all of us! These Indian Wars involved so many Georgian men, but most of these records have not been fully explored. Please share this with any surname lists or other lists that it might help. Don't we wish they had included the full first name instead of the initial!! If you can identify any of these men, please do share more about them. Most them probably did receive bounty land for their service, some widow's may have received pensions...and we just got a pension record on Martin Crow who was actually injured in a battle and received pension afterwards. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/military/indian/pensions/crow.txt June 17, 1836 54th Militia - DeKalb County Capt Wm Ezzard 1st Lieut Cyrus Choice 2nd Lieut H.B. My ggrandfather James White, from Thomas County, Ga., fought in the Seminole War of 1836. I have much info on his service which I found in the small genealogical library in Ocala, Fl. This library is the repository for about 30 volumes concerning the Indian wars. As far as I know they do not do interlibrary loans, and the staff is small, so probably can't help with research. I don't live in that vicinity anymore so can't help, either. Lois
If your male ancestor was a young man around 1836 and in Georgia, chances are high that he participated in the (Creek and Cherokee) Indian Wars either in GA or FL. Since there is not much on-line for these rosters, we're working hard to compile lists so that others can be helped. If you think your ancestor was in one of these companies, they probably got bounty land and a pension later on. In the rosters you may even find some neighbors or future-in-laws serving along with them. Please pass this along to any surname lists or other lists that you think might be helped by the information. Hi... I am researching the Hodges - Batten family and I am seeking some help..... This is what I know.... Daniel R. Hodges (Aug 1861, GA - Jun 1907) had a relationship with Nancy Batten (Oct 1855, GA - Aug 1916, GA) and they had a son named Matthew Daniel Batten Hodges (Mar 1881, Charlton Co, GA - died Sept 1924). I do know that Nancy married a Charles Peterson and that the Batten family basically raised Matthew and he went by the last name of Batten and not Hodges.... He married Catherine Lucretia Bennett and they had 8 children.....Edith, Winnie, Donald, Clyde, Kermit, Catherine Nancy, Arthur, and one that I have no name for....I am seeking any information on them and whatever else there is. Any help is appreciated.....thank you... Stephanie Grohol
George NUTTERFIELD/NUTTERVILLE/NETTERVILLE, born about 1775, living in Shelby Co KY, 1790-1810. Was a member of Lt. Walkers Rangers of the Army for the territory South of the Ohio, as early as 1785, and at least til 1798. His son Gholson STEPPE NUTTERFIELD, on the 1880 census gave his (GEORGE's) Birth place as Georgia. Does ANY ONE have ANY record of a NUTTERFIELD etc., for anywhere, anytime in Georgia or anywhere else. Is/WAS there a connection with the STEPP/STEPPE line. Any help appreciated. I have William L. Yeargin, born in one of the Carolinas about 1821. Sarah his wife was born about 1832, I think, her maiden name was Waddel. Again she was born in either NO. or SO. Carolina. The twin daughters were born about 1858 in Georgia. This is all I have to go on at this time. There are other siblings, but they were younger and born in Mississippi and Illinois. William Yeargin did not die in Georgia. The whole family moved to Illinois and I know he lived at least to 1895. He was in prison in Menard Penitentary about that time. They had a son William who married Alice and they are found back in Georgia in 1910. Thanks for any help. Mary
No they did not. Some went to work in turpentine factories and other places. Census reports will show a list of names of men and then show occupation as turpentine. Many prisoners were leased out. Thanks Jackie and others for your suggestions. So did everyone, no matter where they were arrested, go to the same Penitentiary then? There are no other records that I've been able to find to indicate that this person was ever in Cass County, so it came as an interesting surprise that he was arrested there. There are not many records surviving for Cass County during this time period unfortunately. I did find some court records indicating that this person had some legal troubles in Edgefield, SC prior to this time and had an order to not leave the state----I am having a hard time finding anything about their laws during this time though and don't know if they would have done anything to pursue someone across state lines. Anyone know? Michelle The Georgia State Penitentiary was located at Milledgeville. I would assume that is the "prison" you are referring to, not that your ancestor served his sentence in Cass County. Some records are online using a Google search. Check the Georgia State Archives holdings as well for records. My ancestor's brother is listed in "The Georgia Black Book" by Robert Scott Davis. It says that he was in Cass County and lists his crime as "escape". It says that he just served one term for 1 1/2 yrs. (1838-1840) I have not been able to find anything to help me understand what he might have done or if the prison was in Cass itself. Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome! > > thanks, > Michelle > > > ==== GEORGIA Mailing List ==== > If you wish to unsubscribe from the Georgia list, send only the word > UNSUBSCRIBE to GEORGIA-l-request@rootsweb.com or if you are on the Digest > List to GEORGIA-d-request@rootsweb.com > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. Kay, Actually, we haven't really started on the Atkinson family yet. All we have so far is my husband, Roger's father, grandfather and great grandfather. Let me know if you see a connection. My Mother was an Atkinson, born in Griffin, Ga., lived in Pelham, and other Georgia cities. Married a Mathison and moved to Ozark, Ala., and Skipperville AL., then to Florida. We can go back no farther than 1812 in our line, and I think a good many of you are having the same problem. It is generally thought that most Finchers in America are related but the proof is either lost, destroyed or just plain never existed. > > Recently, we found out about a new tool to determine whether or not we are related. Genealogy by genetics (DNA) is being used by many family organizations to determine kinship. It is now possible to determine how far back you have to go in order to find your most recent common ancestor. > > Armed with this knowledge, we have established a Fincher family DNA project with Family Tree DNA. A company that specializes in the use of DNA for genealogical research. The purpose of this project is to connect the different Fincher lines. We hope to break through the brick walls and establish the connection between the various branches of the Fincher family. Since there is documentation to connect certain lines to the original immigrant, Francis Fincher, we hope that DNA will connect other lines to him as well. > > The test is simple and painless. Your genetic test kit consists of a cheek scraper and a collection tube. In about five minutes, you will be able to read the instructions and perform a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush. A backup scraper and tube is included to insure that a good sample is obtained by the lab. They intend that you use them both! > > There are two requirements to participate in the DNA project: (1) you have to be male (because only men carry and pass along the Y-Chromosome) and (2) you have to have the Fincher last name from your father not your mother. > > Only one male needs to be tested from each Fincher line. Thanks to Ann Fincher's book, FINCHER 300 YEARS IN THE USA, there is now a published genealogy of most of the Fincher branches. In order to save money, you may wish to check with your kin to make sure that two men from the same line are not being tested. > > Family Tree DNA offers two possible tests, a 12 marker test for $99.00 and a 25 marker test for $169.00. The company suggests starting with the 12 marker test to establish kinship and later upgrading to the 25 marker test to find the most recent common ancestor. Since we suspect that most Finchers are kin, unlike Smiths or Joneses, it is probably more cost effective to order the 25 marker test to begin with. Since it cost $90.00 to upgrade the 12 marker test to the 25 marker test, there is a $20.00 savings to order the 25 marker test initially. > > If you're already convinced you can order your kit at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=S79430&special=True > > If you have questions you can find answers at http://www.familytreedna.com/ or by contacting Joy Fincher Atkinson at joydurell@bellsouth.net . > > Looking forward to working with you, > > Hugh M.
