IF John Anderson was Sarah's father, she is probably the younger female enumerated in his household in the 1820 federal census of Habersham County: 1820 Habersham County, Georgia - page 119 John Anderson - 000101 - 00101 (1 free white male aged 16-26, 1 aged over 45 - 1 free white female aged 16-26, 1 aged over 45) Good luck! Linda, Many of the early inmates were buried on the hospital grounds. I have a Poteet relation who was buried there in the early years of the sanitarium, and my cousin, JennieVee Poteet Pitts, was somehow able to get copies of his medical and burial records about thirty or thirty-five years ago. At that time, I was very much "into" genealogy with her, but not as interested in her branch as she. I should have paid better attention, but that was a long time ago, and I am not as clear on the facts now as I might be. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that the hospital had kept a sort of numbering-system chart for those on-site burials, the majority in unmarked graves, and may possibly be able to identify those burials if necessary. Check with the Baldwin County Historical Society in case any of those burials have been recorded and published. Good luck! From what I understand, New Echota was where the Trail of Tears started and a lot of people listed as being in the Cherokee Wars only helped with the Trail of Tears. I've been to the museum and it is very interesting. I have a little info on my ancestor that pertains to the subject: "James Crawford Haire, Private, served in Caldwell's Co. of the 1st Tennessee. Linda, I know that some families claimed the bodies. My great grandfather died there, but is buried in the family cemetery. There are some that were not claimed that are buried on the grounds of the "hospital". Were the inmates at the Milledgeville sanitarium buried in a public cemetery or were they buried on the grounds of the hospital? Is there a cemetery listing and/or are burial records available? Linda (Floyd Co., GA)
Sarah Anderson 1830 Habersham County , Georgia
Sarah Anderson 1822 Habersham County , Georgia
I don't know as much about the Cherokee War 1838 -- so need some help on identifying this location. Is "New Echota" different from "Echota" in Gordon County. (Pass this along to any surname or county lists that might be able to help. Some of these men eventually probably settled in Alabama and also Florida) Linda has typed this, but we're trying to figure out more about where this company was raised from...and about the individuals involved. If we could place all the officers in a county vicinity that would help. I really appreciate those of you who have shared something about your ancestor in these wars of this time period. We're gradually getting more and more on-line thanks to all of you! Also if any of you are able to get copies of rosters while you're at the Georgia Archives, that would help us so much. Both Linda and I live out of state, so have to depend on others to get the data copied for us. #33 on this list, W. S. Grogen, is most likely William S. Grogan b abt 1812. According to family tradition and a few documents found, William S. Grogan was literally left on Thomas Grogan's doorstep. Thomas and his first wife Rachel adopted William. See: NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY, VOL 55, #3, Sept. 1967. These Indian Wars involved so many Georgian men, but most of these records have not been fully explored. Please share this with any surname lists or other lists that it might help. Don't we wish they had included the full first name instead of the initial!! If you can identify any of these men, please do share more about them. Most them probably did receive bounty land for their service, some widow's may have received pensions...and we just got a pension record on Martin Crow who was actually injured in a battle and received pension afterwards. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/military/indian/pensions/crow.txt June 17, 1836 54th Militia - DeKalb County Capt Wm Ezzard 1st Lieut Cyrus Choice 2nd Lieut H.B. My ancestors Prince Shepherd, and my grandfather William J. Shepherd, were born on this site! Prince was a slave owned by the Colonel William S. Shepherd, and his mother Anne Symthe. I have a lot of info. about these Shepherds! While visiting there, I saw this enactment and also visit wher e Sunday's skirmish portrays the Battle of Shephard's plantation, at which the 45th Regimen of the Georgia militia left their home in Gwinnett County, GA to defend local settlers against Indian raids. http://www.westville.org/1836creekindianwar.htm 1836 Creek Indian War Saturday, May 29, 2004 Skirmish at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. EST Sunday, May 30, 2004 Skirmish at 2:30 p.m. EST Tension builds as visitors await and imminent Indian attack during Westville's recreation of the Creek War period of 1836 in Southwest Georgia. The Saturday re-enactment is based on historical accounts of an Indian assault on the village of Roanoke in Stewart County --located on the Chattahoochee River only a few miles west of Westville. Sunday's skirmish portrays the Battle of Shephard's plantation, at which the 45th Regimen of the Georgia militia left their home in Gwinnett County, GA to defend local settlers against Indian raids. Due to years of broken treaties and a new federal policy requiring the Indians to leave their native homes, Creek Indian tribes retaliated against settlers in 1836. Re-enactors in period clothing will portray soldiers assigned to protect local Westville citizens from Creek Indians as they attack the village. Horses, gun fighting, hand-to-hand combat and "wounded" people all add to the life-like skirmish. The event will give spectators a first hand, hair-raising account of what an Indian attack might have looked and felt like during that period of history.
