Seeking clarification about the Joel Jones of Columbia County who registered in 1803 for the Georgia Land Lottery held in 1805. The book on Some Georgia Pioneers by Joseph T. Mattox says he married (1) Bathsheba Lowtrip in 1790 and (2) Eliz Russell in 1792. in Richmond County. Joes is believed to have eventually moved on to Newton County by 1832. Joel Jones was a winner of Lot # 286 in District # 4, Wilkinson County, GA in the 1805 Land Lottery (source: index cards of winners at GA Archives). However, my confusion is that it appears the same lot may have also been awarded to someone else: 286/4 William Boyd Greene 18 Dec 1805. Joel Jones was not listed in the1820 first census for Wilkinson. Does anyone know if Joel Jones actually took possession of the Wilkinson County land and did Joel have any children? Thanks. W. Hey, Betty. My library in Cobb County has Ancestry Plus and therefore, isn't even considering a subscription to Heritage Quest. I'd appreciate a listing of those counties whose libraries DO have access because I am now paying to access HQ through a membership to an out-of-state genealogical society. I would be thrilled to be able to have access through a nearby library instead. Does anybody know of a listing? I did pick up Ivy E, thanks. Someone else found the same blurred page (six pages further on) that I did. Guess I'll have to see if FHC or NARA has a better microfilm copy. Thanks to all who responded. Walt

Kay, I really really don't want to discourage you, but there may not have been anything in the way of (what we think of today as) an obituary in the Pelham newspaper for your baby sister. I have completed three volumes of newspaper "death notices" from my local newspaper, and though a very few of the early death notices concerning infants named more than the parents, most did not. Those few-and-far-between early obituaries were almost always written by a family friend or close relative and usually gave little information of a genealogical nature, but were descriptive of the child, the broken-hearted parents, and (usually) the promise of a reunion in Heaven. Did Braswell's new owner have any idea as to the disposition of Braswell's records? They are probably still with someone in the family if they haven't been destroyed, and the new owners probably know who that would be. Have you checked with the Mitchell County Historical or Genealogical Society to see if they have made any effort to secure them? I was lucky to find and purchase one of the volumes (22 in all), of stubs, for Claims Against South Carolina, printed in 1918. It is an unusual "book", though it isn't really a book. It was printed, from the stubs, in large sheets, perforated, folded, and then stitched together with "string". I was told, by seller, that to "cut" the pages would decrease it's monetary value, however I've "snipped" the perforations, and outside of pages in order to read some of the pages that are otherwise hidden from view. I needed it for data, monetary return is of no importance. Sherry Hope these are useful to Bird/Stafford researchers. As I type the stubs for my own research, I will post to Georgia list before deleting (hopefully Screven/Effingham/Bulloch etal subscribers will see). Kay, I found these families in census, enumerated in 1910 Thomas County, Georgia (Atkinson), 1920 Houston County, Georgia(Atkinson), 1920 Desoto County, Florida (Mathison), and in 1930 Charlotte County, Florida (both). Children listed on the census for the family of Agret/Agrat M. and Mary S. Mathison are Virginia L., Myrtle F., and Stella? K. Of course, if Helen was born and died in 1916, she wouldn't be listed, and our death certificate records don't begin until about 1919. Do you know if Helen's grave has a marker, and did they bury her in Mitchell or take her to a cemetery in another county to be buried with other family members? I don't have cemetery listings for Mitchell County, Georgia, but will be happy to send you the census enumerations if you need them and don't already have them. Sorry not to be of more help. I get there from Highway 247. From Warner Robins, you would head south. A short time (forgive me for not dealing in actual distance) after passing the Frito Lay plant on the left, 247 splits. Stay to the right, on the 247 spur, and you will go into a more residential area. Sandbed Road is off to the right. It is a dirt road. I will try to get back and take a photo of the church. I sure thought I took one already, and was a little surprised when I didn't find one in my camera. :-) Stephanie Lincecum Sandbed Cemetery Index of Burials http://gagen.i-found-it.net/sandbed.html
