Hello Georgia, My family's oral history claimed that my gggrandparents (John and Rachel/Rachael Kelly) had a cotton farm outside of Atlanta...I finally found Rachel/Rachael (a widow) in the 1860 census living in Atlanta City, Ward no. 5...but John remains a mystery. I am new to Georgia research and would appreciate any advice about how to find out more about him. Since Rachel/Rachael is recorded as a widow with a one-year old child in the 1860, I think that John must have died @ 1859. Is there an archive in Georgia that will look for his death certificate? Does anyone know the area that Atlanta City Ward no. 5 would have encompassed in 1860? John was from Ireland...would New Orleans have been the most likely port to look for him on a passenger list? I am very appreciative of ANY advice you can give me about researching him in Georgia. thank you, Joy
Larry, From census records, it appears that your Joseph Lee Spires was the son of Joseph L. Spires, who was the son of Redden Spires, who was the son of James C. and Mary Jane McDuffie Spires, all of Telfair County. If you have not done so already, I would suggest ordering copies of death certificates to "source" your lineage. The Kentucky Legislature is getting ready to drastically limit access to Kentucky vital records including BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES, and DIVORCE. (MILITARY RECORDS are also being limited but I do not know which bill is involved.) You can find the entire bill at: http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/record/04rs/HB100/SCS1.doc Death certificates will still be public record after 50 years but more recent death certificates will only be available to: 1. the decedent's widow or widower, 2. child eighteen (18) years of age or older 3. parent 4. grandparent 5. sibling eighteen (18) years of age or older 6. funeral director handling the decedent's funeral arrangements 7. personal representative of the decedent's estate 8. a named beneficiary of an insurance policy of the decedent 9. a person with a claim against the decedent's estate This means that genealogists can no longer order great-uncle Jasper's death certificate to see his parents' names. Birth records will be have limited access while the person is living but will still be public record after 100 years. Divorce and marriage records will be closed for 70 years. We are very late in the process. Carla, I don't know if this will help you, but thought I'd send it on. Name: Powell, George M, III Birth-Death: 1910 Accession Number: 3391576 Source: Ancestry.com-Biography & Genealogy Master Index (BGMI) Georgia Deaths, 1919-98 Mrs. George M. Powell Death Date: 09 Jan 1922, County of Death, Colquitt. Certificate No. 677-D George M. Powell Death Date 18 Apr 1970. Age: 48 years, Co. of Residence, Muscogee Certificate No. 011890 Kay (Fiveash) From: "Sapphire Geenie" <sapphiregeenie@hotmail.com> To: <GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 26, 2004 7:40 PM Subject: [GEORGIA] Powell! > Hello, > > I am trying to find out if the George M Powell in the 1850 census for Lee County Georgia is the same man as John Powell who turns up in the 1860 census in Hillsborough County Florida. The children are very similar and so is the wives. > > In the 1850 census for Lee County it lists George M Powell 37, Margarette 37, Eliza 12, Charles 8, Ambros 6, James 4, and Taylor 1 > > In the 1860 census for Hillsborough County FL it lists John Powell 45, Margarette 45, Eliza 20, Charles 17, Andrew 15, Henry 12, James 10, Lilisky 7, William 6, Martha 9 months. > > I realize ages in these census aren't exactly ten years apart but I have found in other census where they weren't ten years apart they could go either way, for instance in 1870 James M Powell is now 22 years old. I can't find a John and Margarette Powell in 1850 in Lee County GA and that is where their first five children were born. According to Biographical Rosters of Florida's Confederate and Union Soldiers 1861-1865 Volume V - James M Powell and Ambrose C Powell were both born in Lee County GA, the descriptions and ages of these men make them seem like brothers also the fact that James M had a brother Charles and I can prove that James M is the son of John and Margarette as in the 1870 census Martha who was 9 months in 1860 is now living with her brother James M. Apparently John and Margarette Powell are deceased by 1870, and I can't find where the rest of the siblings are so far. > > If anyone knows anything about George M and Margarette Powell or John and Margarette Powell all of Lee County Georgia, please contact me as this is a brick wall for me. > > Thanks, > > Carla > > > ==== GEORGIA Mailing List ==== > NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political > announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, > etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. > Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett kathleenburnett@earthlink.net > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial.
