    1. Unbound Headright and Bounty Documents Files 1783-1909
    2. C. Atkins - Olathe, KS
    3. The Georgia Department of Archives and History has made available unbound headright and bounty documents files for the years 1783-1909, on the below listed Web page. Also known as the Warrant files, these manuscripts reflect the various preliminary stages in the granting of headright land. In addition to a few other odd papers, the following types of documents are included in these files: warrants, vouchers, certificates, petitions, and powers of attorney. The files are arranged alphabetically by surname with an individual folder containing all papers relating to any one name regardless of the location of the land. http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/web/pdi/rg003/003-04-005.htm

    3. I would like to invite anyone researching the SMITH surname in Georgia to participate in the Southern Smith DNA Reconstruction Project at: http://www.southernsmiths.org/smithdnaproject.htm If you are a direct MALE Smith descendant of a Georgia Smith, we ask you to take the DNA test. Deb Harper is one of the coordinators. This is a fabulous opportunity to see which branch of the Smith family your DNA matches....I recommend the 25 marker kit. My test kit #17331 results are posted on the site. 3. Jim, Thanks for the info. Did a Google search and was surprised at the number of hits I got. As much genealogical research as I do I was just surprised that this had never come up. Have located the RootsWeb site listing people to whom passports were issued and found none of my relatives, so I am no longer interested. Your info about the "Creeks don't rise" was also new to me and thanks for that as well. 2. Joe & Steph
    3. Hi... I am seeking information on Ealey (Ealie, Eally) Thompson who was born 30 Oct 1882 in Charlton Co, GA.....he married Arizona (Arzona) Crawford in 1903 in Charlton Co, GA....I believe that Arizona is the daughter of John J and Caroline Yarbrough Crawford....and she was born in Apr 1887 in Charlton Co, GA....could soomeone help me figure out when they died? I somehow cannot find them in the SSDI or GA death index....did they move to FL and possibly die there???? They had from what I discovered in the 1920 census for Charlton Co, GA, they had 7 children, Weston (or Veston), Bruce, Roy, Carl, Clavil(?), Maruce (?), and Ethel....and they were in the twnship/city of Toledo #1545.... For the census, is there still a Toledo in 1930..if not what would it be called in 1930?????? I would appreciate any information on this family.....when they were born, died, marriage info....where they died....did they move to FL before 1930??? Anything would be great.... Thank you... Stephanie Grohol

    3. Ralph: Not just "these areas were not considered part of the U. S." but the U.S. had treaties with the Creeks, and per the Treaty of Washington (1805), the U.S. paid the Creeks $12,000 annually for eight years and $11,000 for the subsequent ten years for permitting travel between the Ocmulgee River and Mobile. The Creeks were also responsible for maintaining ferries and "houses of entertainment" for travelers as part of the treaty. Somewhere I have a copy of a passport, authorizing one of my ancestors to go into what is now Alabama with a party to trade with the indians. The passport was signed at West Point by no less than Gen Winfield Scott. (Took me forever to figure out that the reference was not to West Point, NY. I'm kinda dense at times!) Anyway, they were herding pigs, of all things! Like others have mentioned, there are several interesting books on the subject; I found "The Federal Road, through Georgia, the Creek Nation, and Alabama, 1806-1836" by Southerland and Brown to sort of put things in perspective for me. BTW, if you're familiar with the old saying "The good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise...", the reference is not about high water, but the Creeks rising on the warpath. Happy hunting, JIM MOORE ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ralph Bailey" <ralph-dianne@charter.net> To: <GEORGIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2004 11:09 AM Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] PASSPORTS 1801-2-3 > This the first time I have heard about states issuing passports for visits > to the frontier.
