    1. [GEORGIA] What's in a middle name?
    2. Emma Sanders
    3. I have watched this name business for several days now. I guess we all have something to add and I do too. I have been researching my Dowdy family line for 15 years. I have joined patriotic organizations on that line. However, one of the real puzzles for me is the middle initial of my great, great grand father. You would think that I would accept the name every other researcher has given him, right? Not so. If you see a name like John L. Dowdy and never saw that name written out on any legal papers how would you know what the L. meant? I am serious here. If anyone on this list has proof that the L. in John L. Dowdy is I surely hope you would share with the rest of us. Otherwise it will always just be John L. Dowdy for me. Much appreciation for any help here. Emma

I belong to the many other list and posted some names on one of them. A lady responded with a question and we had a connection. She is disabled and cannot get out to do research. It was exciting to me to be able to give her documented information on her line and help her connect with other researchers working on the same surname. That is what this is all about. Not only looking for our own family information, but helping others as well. Anne Brown FL

    3. Hi... I am trying to find William "IRA" Whiddon (born Feb 1889) in the 1920 Census.....I am not certain which county, but I did find him in Bacon Co, GA in the 1930 Bacon Co, GA Census..... I am having no luck finding him in 1920.... He was married twice...once to Fannie Eldridge ...whom he divorced, but he had three children by her: Lucile, Jessie (born abt 1915) and Louise.... With his second wife, Emma or Emily Hersey, he had the following children listed in the 1930 census....Jewel (son), Louverne, E. J. , Milton, J. C. and John L. Jewel was 12 and Louverne was 10 in the 1930 census....so they might be around in the 1920 census.... I would appreciate any help in trying to locate this family....and thank you for any help that anyone can provide..... Stephanie Grohol

    1. Re: [GEORGIA] strange names, two middle names
    2. Names, middle names or initals can be very frustrating. In my research of my family, in the late 1700,s every brother named a son Joseph M. after someone. So what Joseph belong to whom has certainly been a mystery. Also what is puzzling is a relative with one given name and two initials added before the last. Census are another headache. I was born in 1927 and as the doctor who came to deliver me was more than tippsy, he never entered my birth. And therefore I could never get a birth certificate. Now guess what!. I applied for my social security and after many months gathering documents to prove I was born and was a citizen. the puzzle was solved. In the 1930 census I was listed as Hettie Jean born in Ala. In the 1940 census I was listed as Pattie Jean born in GA. None of these are my real name. My name is actually Patricia Jeanette. Wow I was asked how could my mother have a child born on the same day, at the same time in two different states. My answer? Well, a bridge separted Ala and GA so I guess she was in the middle of the bridge. The social security accepted this. I have left papers for my descendants to know who I am and where I was born. Now I wonder what my ancestors are saying when I become uptight and irritable when I am trying to find which one I belong to, what the initials mean, Who was their parents. So far I am looking for my 4th great grandmother and according to many, I have about fifteen to chose from. Think I will just take the richest, the most beautiful, the one with the best lineage and call it a day. Pat in FL

    3. I hope we don't wear this subject out and get someone objecting to it. With each person's post it brings to mind other names. It is also, very helpful to get ideas of why our ancestors used such names. For those who get tired of the subject, please just use the DELETE KEY. My maternal grandparents had 5 girls before they had their only son, which was their last child. Two of the girls were given 1 male name, Ernestine Earl and Willie Elizabeth "Betty". Over 20 years ago, I worked with a lady who went by the initials B. D. She would never tell anyone what her given name was. She would only say she didn't like her name. She was killed by an 18 wheeler as she cross the highway in AL when she left the beach alone. Her obituary gave her full name, both male. I think her first name was Beryl, but I don't recall her middle name. Some of my male ancestors were the named: Friend, Major, General, and Doctor. One of my friends was given the name Rosalea, but she was called B. C. She was the youngest of a large Italian family. Her siblings gave her that nickname when she was small, because she was always singing the C B tablet advertisement song. While working on one family line I across a male with the surname of Andrew, who married a lady with the surname of Screws, they married and had a girl and named her Tabitha Screws Andrew. This is no joke. I know that poor child had a bad time with that name. Hazel Scanned for viruses by Blue Coat http://www.WinProxy.com/

Doing this only continues on the problem. I am here, I have been watching the conversation behind the scenes. I have found in my years of watching over lists that when a strange topic such as the one we have had the last several days is allowed to wind down quietly it stops quicker than if we begin sending messages to the list complaining about it. When the complaints or postings of unhappiness are sent to the list, we not only begin to get postings in response to the complaint, postings of pros and cons regarding the subject matter and the continuation of posting regarding the subject due to the fact we have members responding to the first postings they see in their box and do not even read your complaint until they have already posted.
