I can remember my father relating how he and Mother traveled from Jacksonville Florida to Nashville, Tennessee in 1925. He had gotten and scholarship to college. They traveled by car and the most important thing they had with them was the kit to patch the tires when they blew out or got punctured. We have no idea what a hardshop travel it was even in the early years of the 1900's. There were few paved roads and few gas stations. Their were no comforts by the side of the road every ten miles. I wonder what we would have done back then. It took many hours to travel short distances. My mother related going to the "lake" out from Jacksonville at Green Cove Springs and it took all day. They piled into a wagon in the summer and went and stayed with cousins and you didn't go for a short time. That wasn't far at all but it took them all day Barbara Macon, Georgia ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. James Groover and family, his brother and several others left Bulloch County, GA and traveled to Thomas County and Lowndes County and it took them two months. There is no diary or accounting of their journey. I thank you for posting the Diary, it gives me some insight to the hardships. Thank you very much. Looking for wife and child of Hezekiah K. Dowdy. Hezekiah was single when he registered for the WWI draft in Dodge County in 1918 and stated that he had a dependant mother as a reason for exemption. Did he marry immediately after he registered for the draft? If so who and when did he marry? He was listed as widowed in the 1920 census and he had 18 month old Myrtice Dowdy and his widowed mother in the home. Looking for information on this family. Any help appreciated. Emma
Janet, You and the board are all very welcomed to what I have and I was happy to share it. I haven't tried to track down the map, I've been buried in Garrison research for several years and just can't seem to get off of that long enough to switch lines. And then if I do switch I have to learn all of the names again and I get my self confused, and that's not hard to do. I thought the same thing when I saw how many miles (or how few) they traveled each day. These were like dirt logging roads for the most part, down old Indian trails for another. So we can get an idea how long it took to cross one state, how long the Indians spen on the Trail of Tears. Terry Thank you for the following information, do really appreciate it. Suspect that they didn't receive the free land since they weren't there for a full 5 years by birth dates. I did find several for Milas, and Thomas G, and many for James but just going to have to look further. From the US Bureau of Land Management: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/Visitors/Patents.asp Types of Land Patents Cash Entry: An entry that covered public lands for which the individual paid cash or its equivalent. Credits: These patents were issued to anyone who either paid by cash at the time of sale and received a discount; or paid by credit in installments over a four-year period. If full payment were not received within the four-year period, title to the land would revert back to the Federal Government. Homestead: A Homestead allowed settlers to apply for up to 160 acres of public land if they lived on it for five years and proof of cultivation. This land did not cost anything per acre, but the settler did pay a filing fee. Military Warrants: From 1788 to 1855 the United States granted military bounty land warrants as a reward for military service. These warrants were issued in various denominations and based upon the rank and length of service. Mineral Certificates: The General Mining Law of 1872 defined mineral lands as a parcel of land containing valuable minerals in its soil and rocks. There were three kinds of mining claims: Lode Claims contained gold, silver or other precious metals occurring in veins; Placer Claims are for minerals not found in veins; and Mill Site Claims are limited to lands that do not contain valuable minerals. Up to five acres of public land may be claimed for the purpose of processing minerals. Private Land Claims: A claim based on the assertion that the claimant (or his predecessors in interest) derived his right while the land was under the dominion of a foreign government. Railroad: To aid in the construction of certain railroads. The Act of September 20, 1850, granted to the State alternate sections of public land on either side of the rail lines and branches. State Selection: Each new State admitted to the Union was granted 500,000 acres of public land for internal improvements established under the Act of September 4, 1841. Swamp: Under the Act of September 28, 1850, lands identified as swamp and overflowed lands unfit for cultivation was granted to the States. Once accepted by the State, the Federal Government had no further jurisdiction over the parcels. Town Sites: An area of public lands which has been segregated for disposal as an urban development, often subdivided in blocks, which are further subdivided into town lots. Town Lots: May be regular or irregular in shape and its acreage varies from that of regular subdivisions. brenda wrote: >I have another question regarding migration, and maybe someone can answer this for me. > >I know my Garrison line moved to Coweta abt. 1833/34 due to Church records. How very interesting, thank you for your insight. Sharon -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] DIARY OF AN 1858 WAGON TRAIN JOURNEY As I am in my eighties, I remember mule and horse travels. Hot summers were bad on the animals pulling loads. When they were wet with sweat and breathing hard as they did in heat of summer , travel had to be broken for the animals to cool down. Also it required more water for them to drink and camping for the nights required finding streams to quench the humans' thirst and restore the water jugs. And watering the animals. Summer was never used for long trips except in emergencies. Also in summer the metal rims on the wheels expanded and every so often the wagon had to be submerged axel deep in a stream for so many hours and then moved enough to soak the other half of the wheels so that the wood expanded and the steel rims shrunk again. Yoy didn't have to worry with these things in winter. It would be my guess that this was true in 17's and 1800's as well as it was in the early 1900's. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: [GEORGIA] DIARY OF AN 1858 WAGON TRAIN JOURNEY > Brenda, > Please do tell the reason they left so late in the year. > Thanks, Sharon ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. Brenda, what a wonderful history lesson! Thank you for sending this to all of us, and to the List Administrator, for it's approval! In the Text - it is stated in Arkansas, crossing "the Bayou'" I just wonder what Bayou it was referring to. My GGGrandfather lived in Bayou Meto - Mineral Township, Pulaski Co., AR., late 1850's. John W. Cox is on the 1860 Census with his family. They lived in Floyd Co., Georgia before they traveled to Arkansas. Ar GenWeb page and that was about 1998 or 1999. It's been off line for several years, I had one printed copy that I had saved for back up. On the bottom of the page it says: copy taken from the Pope County Historical Society, sure hope this wasn't copyright in some way. I was very happy to have this since it had my Blackburn line mentioned in the Diary and the article saying that Lavina Blackburn was still living and one of the few left that made this trip. I had my copy in my Word file, I just hi-lighted sections and place on each piece of mail, so I would think that it could be put back onto a Word Page in the same way and saved in Documents. I also did a copy/paste to WORD and what a nice document it made. Took maybe 3 minutes and will read it through as time permits. Thanks from another genealogy person for taking your time to share with all that were interested. I have several Bankston folks who had farms/plantations/whatever on almost opposite sides of the state of Georgia and often wondered how the he traveled from one to another to keep up and manage it during the days of slavery. Would have been so nice if he had just made a few notes in the old Bible or something to have passed on down to us from almost 200 years ago. I have another question regarding migration, and maybe someone can answer this for me. I know my Garrison line moved to Coweta abt. 1833/34 due to Church records. They were living in Coweta on the 1840 census. They were also listed on the 1850 census in Coweta. My questions is: first two sons were born in Coweta 1844 and 1846, they then moved to AL, place unknown, third son was born in AL Feb 1849. What I suspect is they went to AL. for maybe free land, and they had to stay for several years to receive this land. They then sold and returned to Coweta Co. for the next son who was born in 1851. They were in Coweta until at least 1854 due to the birth of their next child who was born in MS. I suspect they had family there and was looking at land in MS. but I'm only guessing on this one. By 1860 they are in Fayette Co. AL for the next child's birth and are there until about 1864/65. How long did they have to live on land in Al. to receive it free?? Brenda

In the 1930s and 40s Batson Cook Construction Company of La Grange GA had a rooming/boarding house for their construction managers when they were between projects. This was located in Opelika. My father lived there periodically during that time frame. To my knowledge, he left no family there. There were several of my suspected ancestors (several generations earlier) who migrated from Carroll Co GA into the Randolph Co AL area. Some of them may have drifted Southward. Our host, Rootsweb, keeps all our letters in their Archives. So if you want to see something again that was sent to the Georgia list, it should be there. Go to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=Georgia and search for some key word, such as "diary". Letters sent to individuals are not included. ------------------------------------------------------- "Kay\"s Email" <[email protected]> wrote: > It is a great piece of History, and I'd like to copy > what you have given and > continue to give, if permissible..........
