My guess about mileage: Remember that in 1858 people already lived in towns and on farms all along the route for upwards of thirty years. They may well have has mileage signposts all along the old post (telegraph) roads. Someone ask where War Eagle is here in AR. It is very close to Fayetteville, AR in the mountains of northwest part of the state. War Eagle sponsors a great huge craft show each fall. People come from many states for this. The location is on an old homestead, even with a crist mill. If you plan to go you have to make your reservation very early. Gwen
I don't have the name of the person that you are looking for, but do know that a young man in our school was named Chidister Johnson. Never heard that name before or since. Just another way of spelling Christer? Or Census taker spelled it like it sounded to him. This was back in the 30's. Hi, In researching Christer Smith, a resident of East Point and Hapeville (in Fulton County), I note that he died on May 12, 1913. He left a wife (Sarah) and 6 older children. Is this an unusual first name, perhaps for "Christopher"? His obituary (two days later) in the Atlanta Constitution merely has "C. C. Smith." He does appear in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses. I tried to get his Death Certifcate from Vital Records of Fulton County, but they do not seem to have it. And the State records don't kick in until 1919. It would be very helpful to know the exact circumstances of his death (age 57). He was buried at Mt Zion cemetery in Hapeville, I think. Allen
Not quite. I was born in 1938. I was the youngest of 4 daughters and I had a brother 7 years younger. My Dad worked for the Federal Govt. We traveled a lot and he travered even more. Ike really changed things for us in the South and hopefully all over the US. I grew up mostly in Atlanta. I remember when the best route to Jacksonville was through the little towns. I went to Los Angeles to live in 56. we didn't go on 10 cause there wasn't one. It was a long arduous trip and hot as blue blazes. Emma, Online Dodge County research gives an email address for information on these Telfair/Dodge county families. If you have not already, you might want to contact this person to see if he/she knows who your Hezekiah married. [email protected] I wasn't able to find a marriage record for him, and the only Dowdy death in Dodge County recorded in 1919 (the first year deaths were recorded) or 1920 was a Bessie M. Dowdy, who died on June 27, 1919 in Dodge County - Certificate #7541-A. Sorry to be of so little help. Hopefully someone else on the list can offer more. Kay, >From what I have seen of the early newspaper article, few births were "announced" in the newspapers. Most of the births that did make it into the papers were because of unusual circumstance or because there was few other things to write about. Then, only the parents names were given or more likely the name of the father. Brenda, I see you are researching Garrisons of Georgia? What counties? Are you related to James T. Lord? My gggrandmother was Mourning Elizabeth Garrison Wade daughter of David Garrison and married to George Washington Wade of Floyd County. Would love to have more information. Enjoyed the diary very much. Mary C. Moore [email protected] brenda <[email protected]> wrote: Janet, You and the board are all very welcomed to what I have and I was happy to share it. I haven't tried to track down the map, I've been buried in Garrison research for several years and just can't seem to get off of that long enough to switch lines. And then if I do switch I have to learn all of the names again and I get my self confused, and that's not hard to do.
